A humble man,

talking some sense.

Christmas/ The end of the world HAS arrived.

Very good point, and very good post. Happens with EVERY manager.

Artful Dodger

Only 6 starters in the Hamburg final plus another couple on the bench plus a number of decent squad players. Yes, there were a few that didnt come off but to be fair, that's not a bad record.

I'm not sure anybody is going back that far in relation to the current malaise. The primary concerns seem to be recent perfromances, a plan we all embraced that seems to have headed south and the realisation that the sticky stuff is alot closer than we would have thought seven games ago.
I'd like to stick to the theory, suggested a couple of times by different sources, that the relatively huge squad was assembled for the in depth training regime he wanted which by the time his tenure came along was an absolute mess. AJ was the most costly mistake but to be fair Hodgson got quite alot of the outlay back on others or the player was quickly shipped out. Riise the Younger for example was often hailed as a fine crosser of the ball and in full blown training matches that is all he did. Did'nt somebody do a prozone type feature on this subject on here yonks ago. As a transfer policy comparison Jol is actually using the players he has brought in specifically for the first team like Rodders, Dejagah, Richardson, Diarra and co, we have'nt seen Tavares yet of course but has anybody, but to para phrase Eric Morecombe not necessarily in the right places, .................. or order ................ or game.

Are you kidding me saying not many successes?

All of these players made solid to excellent contributions and aside from AJ, didn't cost us much as all. The rest were stop gap or squad fillers. We lament how thin are squad is now but it was VERY thin when Hodgson got here. Even Smalling started and then got us 10m.

Bit like the plants in my garden!

Put a notice up declaring your garden a tribute to the quintessential english cottage garden as epitomised by the likes of the late Gertrude Jekyll and watch the funding come flooding in.
Some of my best landscape drawings look like I can't make my mind up.

Back on topic. Take the AJ fee out of the equation and the list could have made up a half decent team at least once. I wonder if we would have a Smalling plus Hangeland/Hughes back two by now. I remember the Hodgson go to phrase of "not ready yet" so perhaps that was never on the cards.

Bryanthebroom

I'd take Gera back in a second, he would have been a decent squad player and would have been perfect as a second striker and foil for Berba when Ruiz is injured.

Snibbo

What a shame Julian Grey and Giles Barnes weren't successful.

We could really live up to the "Ruperts and Tarquins" label if we had a Julian and a Giles in the team.

Honestly, none of what you've provided does anything to diminish Roy's tenure as far as I'm concerned.
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." — The Dude

Burt

I don't really remember who came and went under Roy.

All I remember is that he saved us from the Championship, and I had a great couple of days in Hamburg. Whilst he wasn't here that long, he will go down as one of our greats just for those two feats.

A final point - the thing we are missing is the defensive stability and organisation upon which these achievements were based.

A Humble Man

All I was trying to prove that buying lots of players does not make you successful, it is buying what you need and making the players you have play to the best of their ability.  It also demonstrates our scouting team is better now.
We Are Fulham, Believe.

nose

I am not sure what this thread is about.
Roy led us to safety against the odds, the next season got us a European place and the season after led us to a European final.
That was the record that counted so which rose coloured spectacles are you talking about?

A list of signings is just part of what happened, all managers nowadays seem to sign second rate players and I think that is more the agents dealing with club officials than the managers.

Andy S

Lets look back to mark hughes tenure as manager here and about this time of year it tipped up on him as well. Sorted out in the dressing room went onwards and uppwards and finished 10th
You cannot judge a season before christmas.
Every game somebody has an off game. People say on here somebody was poor today. Who knows why. On a rare occasion you get a situation when almost all 11 have a bad game the manager says it is down to tiredness etc but he has no more idea than anyone else as to the reason! I will not criticise the players for one performance but lets see what happens at Liverpool next week I'm not predicting a win but I at least want a good performance.

RaySmith

Managers buy   who the club can afford. Both Roy and MJ have used European contacts and exprience to make good, bargain signings.

Roy  signed such as Brede - his first signing, and MJ has signed Riise, Pog, Diarra, Berba, Riether, Ruiz.
