French football used to be all long-sleeves (might still be, I don't know).  Sylvain Legwinski used to take a pair of scissors in his kit bag to games and the first thing he'd do is cut the sleeves short before he put the shirt on.  I've got one of his old Bordeaux shirts with ragged sleeves as proof.
