Ok so I know Hangeland signed a new deal, and we've brought in Amorebieta, but Douglas is still a free agent and would surely be a good signing to bring proper competition at the CB position.

I notice Sky Sports today are reporting that the "genius" Joe Kinnear has pulled the plug on his move to Newcastle as he has his own defensive targets in mind (I wonder what Chris Perry is up to these days....) so I think we should swoop in and grab him

Northern Cottager

I'd like to see Douglas here to provide some reliable cover or compete for a starting spot.

EJL

If it wasn't already certain, Joe Kinnear is an idiot. Douglas is one of the best centre-halves outside of the 'big four' (/five) European leagues.

If we were to sign Douglas - which I doubt - he'd have to go straight into the starting XI. He's too good to be on the bench.

valdeingruo

I heard somewhere he had signed for a russian club, ill look for concrete proof though.
Self proclaimed tactical genius, football manager approved.

I think dan burn, stock dale and Douglas would make quite the back three

Craven Mad

Just a thought: if we sold Reither, we could bring in Douglas and play a 3-5-2, something like this:

             Stek
Douglas - Brede - Amore
    Boateng - Banega
Dejagah      -         Kaca
              Ruiz
        Berba - Bent

You could also put in Duff+Richardson, as more defensive wingers, in tougher games.

A bit unorthodox, but it would be very "total football" from our Dutch manager!

Thoughts??

Why on earth would the club want to invest in another central defender?
They have a budget to work with and lot of other priorities.
It could be better but it's real life and not a fantasy

Because he could bring: quality, youth (relative to the current squad), and a significant return on investment if we can bring him in on a Bosman. He is a brilliant player, the same nationality as our keeper (Dutch citizenship), only 25, used to Dutch wages (so won't ask for stupid salary), and he could easily be worth £10-15mil after a year or two in the prem. Why not, is the bigger question?? It's really a question of whether we could bench one of the current starting CBs and whether he'd still be keen to come to us..

EJL

Playing Amorebieta wide in a back three would be like entering a tricycle into an F1 race.

We have been told via Twitter rumours that the announcement of his signing will take place tomorrow every day for about the last fortnight.

Oh! And that it would be a double announcement with Downing!

My wish is that neither rumour is true, particularly the Downing rumour.

I am hoping that we find some younger, more exciting talent with potential.
