Newcastle boss Pardew eyeing a repeat show against Fulham

When Papiss Cisse struck in the last minute to secure a smash-and-grab win over Fulham last season, Newcastle United fans celebrated like it was the last victory they would ever see at St James' Park

When Papiss Cisse struck in the last minute to secure a smash-and-grab win over Fulham last season, Newcastle United fans celebrated like it was the last victory they would ever see at St James' Park.

The No 9 hurdled the barriers at the Gallowgate End to party with Geordie fans, Alan Pardew followed suit and almost lost his wallet in the crowd, while Magpies fans thought that Premier League safety was done and dusted.

Only it wasn't.

Newcastle scraped to safety with a win at QPR and a draw at West Ham but haven't scored a Premier League goal since at St James' Park and have failed to win.

Well, 106 days on, both Cisse and Pardew need to come good, and the Toon boss knows that the circumstances building up to this clash are similar to the single-goal win over the Cottagers.

He told the Chronicle: "The fixture came at a time when we knew it was a home game that we needed to win.

"It wasn't unlike how we feel this weekend.

"We know we need a win.

"For our fans, but also because of some of the bad publicity in the transfer market and with Yohan Cabaye.

"It makes it an important game.

"We are very much focused on trying to get the win."

It's been another long week on Tyneside for Pardew and the United faithful.

The Cabaye saga has dragged on without a fresh bid from Arsenal, director of football Joe Kinnear has talked about transfers again but failed to deliver a permanent signing, while the Toon Army made their views on the current regime's questionable transfer policy clear in no uncertain terms.

But there was light at the end of the tunnel for the Magpies.

Pardew said: "Morecambe was a big win for us. You could tell on Thursday morning we'd had a win because it lifts everybody.

"We go in against Fulham looking for a win now."

Martin Jol's side triumphed 1-0 just a fortnight ago against Sunderland on a day when Pardew got behind enemy lines for a scouting mission on Wearside.

He reflected: "I do think it will be a tight game.

"I watched them at Sunderland and I thought Sunderland did well without hurting them.

"That is the problem with Fulham.

"They are a good defensive unit.

"They've got a player of real class in Berbatov in particular that anybody would want to see.

"Fulham have that danger element about them.

"But we should win."

Pardew is waiting to see if Tim Krul shakes off a minor knock, but he should be able to hand Loic Remy his debut at some stage.

He said: "We have some options that improve us after West Ham.

"Remy has got a good chance of being on the bench."

And he quipped: "I don't want our fans chanting his name after half-time because, trust me, they won't be seeing him too early - unless we need him!

"We might see him with about 10 minutes to go because that's all he's got at the moment.

"Don't forget this game was won in the last minute last season, so he might be important.

"So I don't want to not have that option."

Cisse will also return to the fray against Fulham after sitting out the cup game.

And the No 9 would love to repeat his wonderful winner last season.

Fulham star set to miss Newcastle trip

Maarten Stekelenburg is likely to be missing again when Fulham travel to Newcastle on Saturday.

The Dutch goalkeeper, signed from Roma in June, suffered a shoulder injury on the opening day and suffered a setback following a fall in training.

Fellow summer signing Fernando Amorebieta's debut remains on hold, while Kieran Richardson is out for three more weeks with a hamstring complaint.

Provisional Squad: Stockdale, Etheridge, Riether, Briggs, Riise, Hangeland, Hughes, Senderos, Sidwell, Parker, Boateng, Karagounis, Kasami, Dejagah, Kacaniklic, Duff, Taarabt, Berbatov, Ruiz, Bent, Rodallega

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

Newcastle v Fulham

I was at Morecambe to watch Newcastle in midweek and for 60 minutes it was a real struggle, but they stuck at it and in the end their quality shone through. There is a cloud hanging over them, though, with everyone asking will midfielder Yohan Cabaye stay or will he go?

They are working on getting some players in as well and the club needs a lift somewhere. Newcastle haven't won at home since the start of April but they are due a win. They are a better team than their league position showed last year but did all their January signings make them better? I'm not so sure.

Alan Pardew wanted to sign Darren Bent for Newcastle

Fulham won at Sunderland but they got taken apart by Arsenal last weekend. They've got Darren Bent in, who Alan Pardew wanted at Newcastle, and if he plays regularly he will score goals.

They have to work out how they will play this season as in Bent, Dimitar Berbatov, Bryan Ruiz and Adel Taarabt they have plenty of quality attacking players and it's all about finding a balance.

It may be that Martin Jol decides to play with an extra midfielder away from home, as their away form has not been good for years now. It won't be enough this weekend.

Prediction: 2-1

Is Martin Jol coming unstuck at Fulham after Burton Albion draw?

...

But can Jol call himself a man of the people? Certainly not. Bobby Zamora, Clint Dempsey, Dickson Etuhu and Danny Murphy have all walked from SW6 in a huff, while Pajtim Kasami and John Arne Riise have had their problems with the Dutchman.

...

This is crap.  There was no "huff" with Etuhu or Murphy, simply the reality that the situations they wanted and those the club could offer them weren't the same.  Zamora was in a huff, I suppose, but his moodiness long pre-dated Jol.  And Dempsey's problem was merely that he wanted to be sold and Jol wasn't getting it done fast enough for his liking, and had nothing to do with how Jol managed him as a player.  The rumors about "problems" regarding Riise are vastly overblown based on the fact that he stayed home from one road match (which he wasn't going to play in) to do extra conditioning work, and Jol has done practically nothing but praise Kasami's talent while recognizing that he needs to develop, which is entirely reasonable for a young player.

no no no, Kasami really hates jol, didn't you see him run over to him straight after scoring to tell him so.
