Competition for places is good amongst our squad but how many players are guaranteed starts? For me they are

Stekelenburg
Riether
Hangeland
Sidwell
Parker
Ruiz
Berbatov

That leaves 4 spaces up for grabs,  Kasami seems to have grabbed one of those,  every player has his favourite players these are Jols

At the moment one has to add Kasami, Senderos Amorebieta. That just leaves LB which seems to be Richardson.

Hangeland shouldn't be.

The guys got a bad back FFS.

Have you really forgotten what a good player he's been?

I correctly guessed 10 of Jol's 11 starters at Palace on Monday night.  I had Amore at LB instead of Richardson.  Does that constitute Jol's 'guaranteed starters'?

Yes, he was average last season, and awful this season. Doesn't matter that its Hangeland, he is not as good as Senderos and Amorebieta atm.

a fully fit hangers is better than the other CB's, in my opinion it is worth resting him and getting his back sorted as soon as possible.

How can you say that after his last years form?

I think last year is being generous (;
Maybe the last 18-24 months of form!

Well currently with his back problem he's not as good an option as Amorebieta and Senderos IMO. If he's injured let him rest, he's out of form and maybe giving him the competition will help him get back to his best.

I agree, but this is so obvious we shouldn't have to say it.

We have just won a couple of games and the team starts to pick its self. A couple of back to back defeats and we will all start having doubts again about Ruiz/Berbatov, a weakness at left back, no playmaker in midfield and no pace on the flanks etc., etc

Funny what a difference a few points can make to our views.

Sorry Tony, but your past tense is very relevant here. He has BEEN good for us, in the past, but last season he was on his way downhill, and unless he's had the 'bad back' since July, he hasn't improved any.

Even before the suggested injury, he was useless in defence this season. If you watch any game from the past six months, whenever an opponent is going to take a shot, Hangers turns his back and sticks a leg out, and that's the extent of it. Other actually try to go in for the ball, to at least put the player off.

As a captain he has never been any good, and he has been responsible for a number of goals and near misses this season. Sorry to be so blunt, but the guy is proven liability this season, and, unfortunately, teams like us don't survive in the Prem on nostalgia and letting players wear the shirt because they have given good service.

For hangeland it has been up and down over the last two seasons. Prior to that he would often look like the only sane man on the field...

Last season he started bad and was a step behind any challenge. the red card seemed inevitable when it happened. After the ban he came back and played reasonably well.

I don't think he's been that poor this season. or at least he doesn't look as far off the pace as he did at the start of last season.

And the scapegoat baton is passed effortlessly from Senderos to Hangeland who fumbles it incompetently to the disgust of all the knowledgeable onlookers.

Bad back - my arse.
