In Cricket the captain makes a lot of decisions during play. In Football how important is the captain to the team?

I was alway's told we should have 11 captains on the field.

Andy, do you play football? At almost any level you need a leader on the field. As already stated you need a few. The captain has to be very vocal in making sure the team implements the tactics, shape etc while on the field. Alec Stock said that when the game started he had nothing to do or say because Alan Mullery took over. He was in charge, he dictated events for 90 minutes. (probably with quite a lot of help from the great Bobby Moore of course).

The captain is the managers voice on the pitch.
He should lead, organise and basically get the team playing as was instructed in training and the dressing room prior the the game

I would argue at professional it is slightly less prominent because lets face it, with the crowds, the players can barely hear each other shout let alone key figures specifically shouting shape and tactics.

The only increasing resemblance to cricket is the score of our games....

So, is it entirely possible that Jol IS making them put the work in in training but is being let down by his captain(s) on the field?  Meaning that the majority of the blame should lie on them not him?

I think an argument that absconds all blame from the players is an extremely flawed one.

However, it's up to Jol to change it if some/all the players aren't implimenting his ambitions for our play.

That is so ridiculous, what ambitions ? just give it  to Berbatov sums up his ambitions, he does not have a clue.

Ah yes. Because a fully trained coach from a decent region sets us up to simply lose of pass to one player. Talking about ridiculous.....

I'm also surprised you highlighted that as ridiculous as it shows Jol's weakness to change, one his many current flaws.
