Decided to make the short trip to the Amex Stadium to watch a group stage match of the Rugby Union 2015 World Cup, South Africa or Tonga I think.  Should be a good day on the pier, fish & chips etc. It transpires the prices start from £65. Wow, that's mad.

The Equalizer

To put it into perspective: £65 for a brilliant day out, a fascinating display of passionate sportsmanship and one of the best atmosphere's you'll experience at any sporting event.

Or £50 for a shower of shite guaranteed to have you crying into your pint after Fulham lose again.

Look on the bright side.... £65 will buy you an entry ticket to the aforementioned shower of shite @£50, plus 4 pints of post-shite Young's Special or London Pride to round off the day with a smile.

No contest. Who wants to see mud-coloured men grovelling for a pointy ball anyhow...?

...as soon as it became a professional sport the writing was on the wall for fans like me, I used to go to see England at Twickenham for £15 to £17 back in the '80's and '90's but it has become a rich mans sport more than ever as it has become more commercialised and corporate minded. As I refuse to buy 'sky' I can't even see my national side play live, shame as my likelihood of attending becomes more limited the less inclined I am too follow...

And in comparison, my mate went to the Rugby League Semi-Finals, for £20. Two games for a TOTAL of £20. At Wembley, too...
Why would you kill it, kill it, kill it before it dies?

LB,
Sorry to upset you, but the Rugby is now on BBC America  :0)  (which is generally a crap station)

Also, I stumbled across USA v New Zealand Maoris (who won quite comfortably in the last 10/15 minutes)
But I was amazed how good the US team was.
90,000 people at Philadelphia Eagles stadium, the noise and passion of both teams and supporters was incredible (even on TV) and before anyone says anything, I know that if your increase the volume the noise gets louder !
Anyway, the intensity and commitment of the US players puts current Fulham into Alice in Wonderland.
Their captain, I can't remember who he was, was phenomenal (a sort of Redeck/Mountain man version of Lawrence Dallaglio or Dean Richards.
Great stuff
VERY DAFT AND A LOT DAFTER THAN I SEEM, SOMETIMES

I honestly don't think that rugby is a 'rich man's sport'. £65 for a ticket to Twickenham to see an international, how much would you be giving to see England football at Wembley?

And in comparison, most Premiership clubs charge £45+ for matchday tickets. I can go to Harlequins for a tenner. Two seasons ago my friend Phil bought a Quins season ticket for £99 for 17 games - and that included a free beer in the Webb Ellis every matchday.

Football is the rich man's sport.

After the WHU debacle I turned to alcohol & it seems the entry level price I quoted was wrong, link attached.  Not too bad if you can get hold of any of the cheaper tickets.  The icing on the cake being the Harvey's Ale served in & around the Amex.

Additional & reasonably priced tickets for the Amex released today if anyone is interested.

SP

Advice please, Viagogo are advertising silly prices for the higher demand Rugby World Cup matches (100% mark-up upwards).  Do people actually buy at these crazy prices?

copthornemike

Thanks for the reminder - just bought 4 tickets x £50 for France v Italy at Twickers for a Saturday evening.

You say that - but the big games were at face value for those who got them straight away in the 200's of pounds.

That said, the rugby world cup on english soil will be phenomenal.

I got 2 tickets to each semi at twickenham at the cheapest catergory D for £125 a ticket, (tickets for this match got up to £515!)

Seems like a lot but this is the going rate for top level tournaments. I paid about the same of FIFA WC matches and I have paid roughly the same for my Euro tickets next year. With tickets I dont think you can just look at it and say £125 for 80 mins sport, having a ticket is all about the build up and knowing you will be at the event etc and the enjoyment of the whole day.

My Europa League Final ticket from my memory was €75 but that was not just for the match but everything that surrounded it.

snarks

My season ticket for the 3 NFL games at Webley was over £350, but I love the game and consider it worth it.

Last year they were 160 per match IIRC

Completely understand the point about their real value, where I struggle is retaining tickets I can sell at over 100% profit.  As a casual rugby fan, I'm tempted to cash in my quarter final tickets, particularly if their value increases further after the teams are confirmed.

That is of course something to think, if England get to the Semi on of the pairs I have will be worth probally 3x as much, the only real route of selling would be gumtree. But you would feel a bit nasty meeting up with someone and taking all that money off them for a ticket with a fv  they know is much lower

SP

Take Me Home MAF

They do but they take a heafty margin and I'm also cautious about it as you rely on the customer confirming they received the tickets before getting paid, you also get paid after the event. I actually think gumtree is the safest method if you are willing to flog
