First I wanted to be a sports statistician so I could get a great seat in the press box for every game.  Then I wanted to be a basketball coach but realized I would develop hypertension so I went into a totally unrelated field and became a store mannequin.

I then had no idea what I wanted to do. I went to University still not knowing. Came out as a civil engineer and hated it. Then was moved by my company into wastes management and never looked back. Wanted to be a London bus driver, after a brief spell after leaving school joined London Transport at 16 and spent 26 years mending them, never drove a bus in service though, changed to tropical fish and ponds maintenance 20 years ago but still go to Clermonte Ferrand in France couple of times a year to work on some old London buses that are there.

When I first met my wife, it was before I had specialised. I was working as an engineer for the extension of the city airport runway. I told her this was my role and for ages she thought I was a labourer.

I wanted to be a pro footballer, like the heroes I used to watch every week at Craven cottage - like Eddie Lowe, Alan Mullery, Jim Langley and George Cohen (I played left half or left back).

When I told parents and relatives about my ambition, they told me that  I would never achieve this, and should only think of playing Sunday League football like my Uncle John, a Charlton supporter.

I didn't even play for my school team, attending a large, 2,500 boys, comprehensive school - Tulse Hill, Brixton- with a lot of competition, so I never did achieve my ambition, nor my next ambition of becoming a rock star.
