How to explain relegation to a young fan?

This is how I've done it. It may help other parents of Whites fans who've only ever known life in the Premiership.

Fulham are the oldest team in London and one of the oldest in the world. 
They've spent more time outside the top division than in it.
The last 13 seasons are about a tenth of our club's life which is the equivalent  of a 5 week holiday in a year.
It's horrible when holidays end,  but they do.
And sometimes you get to go back on holiday to the same place.
