Khan to bankroll spending spree (IMHO)

In addition to Justin Blackmon, another topic Jaguars owner Shad Khan was asked about today was the relegation of Fulham FC from the English Premier League. Khan purchased the London-based team last July but they won only nine of 38 matches, had the league's worst goal differential (minus-45) and Khan fired two managers.

When Khan purchased Fulham, he envisioned cross promotion possibilities between the Cottagers and the Jaguars. That remains the case although Fulham will now be playing in the Championship Division of English soccer.

"To me, it's unfortunate, it's not what we wanted, but it's reality, OK?" Khan said. "What we have to do is built [Fulham] for the long haul. It has great assets and great fan support. Now we have to get the football side right, where you build it from the ground up and it's something that will last a long time."

One problem with the "ground up" philosophy, which is similar to the Jaguars' plan: If Fulham is terrible in 2014-15, it could be in danger of languishing in the lower division for years, a revenue-sapping debacle. The Jaguars have no such concerns during their build.
Most teams that are relegated are forced to sell off their top players in order to balance the books.

"I've talked to [manager] Felix [Magath] and what we want to do is what's in the best interest of the team," Khan said. "This isn't about balancing the books. Certainly, I'm committed to doing whatever we can to get them back [to the Premier League]."
Khan is encouraged about Fulham's future because of its under-21 team (which finished fifth in its league this year), finances (no debt), sponsorship support (100 percent renewals) and ticket revenue (Khan said prices were among the highest in the Premier League).

"This isn't a one-shot deal for me," Khan said. "Are they sustainable? Yes, 100 percent."

I hope that this was meant the way that it reads.

I was confused by the contradictions. The bit about building for the long term.....it doesn't work that way any more. Is Khan still ignorant about how it works in the prem.?

Nothing is sustainable unless you buy the right players......every summer window....that means spending money. That is the premier div.

The team has to be built for promotion and then rebuilt for the prem., if promotion is achieved. This is full of danger signs...just ask QPR, Portsmouth etc.. If you don't spend....just ask Blackpool, Derby and a few others.

You can build for the long term.  That doesn't mean having the same squad or manager or staff for a decade, it means implementing a plan that can repeat itself.  Buy low, sell high is what we need to do.  We need to invest in players, not buy them for the here and now - that's been our downfall.

Lighthouse

If we had only done this after the Europa. Or even when Hughes was here. Investment in the squad is a gamble but so is non investment or waiting for the kids to come along. When you look at what other teams have spent in the lower half of the Prem compared to us (minus The Greek) then you can understand why we were so poor.

If we had spent on players then we would now be sustainable and not have to find ways of replacing a whole squad.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

You can build a team and long term. The aim should be 20-25 year olds for 2-5M who will have a sell on vale after 2-3 years and make a profit on them.
Also it has to be built with the prem in mind and not look to do a complete rebuild the summer you go up. Yes you need to improve by 3-5 players but a team should do that anyway.

The problem is that every other club is trying to do the same thing.

Then we have to try harder. We have only done it twice in the last 5 years

nose

we need a team capable of promotion and then achieving it, no more no less, that is the only way to get long term stability because pumping money into a championship club (or lower) brings no rewards, only disaster.

Not rocket science really.... so it's up to felix to show us what he can do!

Craven Mad

Very happy with what's been said. Seems like no intention to sell (which will steady the ship). Want to get back to the prem quickly, and wants to be sustainable (which tends to mean, buy young so they keep their value or rise). Happy days!

Someone once asked me, "Why Fulham?".
My response, "Well, lad, you just haven't seen the light yet"

Strong words from Khan, but will he back them up with the right kind of signings?

Khan has said he wants to invest heavily in the squad. It is up to our new manager now to start the really hard work and create a squad that is good enough.

I'd personally prefer that. Just don't think he's the right fit for us. However, Magath has already said that Scotty will be around next season.

Shahid Khan is prepared to bankroll a summer spending spree at Fulham as they look to bounce back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

"This is not about balancing the books. I am committed and we are going to do whatever to get them back to the Premier League."

Very good sign of intent from the chairman however I hope Felix will use this money wisely.

Speculate to accumulate and for goodness sake no more Mitroglu-like signings.

JackyFulham90

Thats good news but we need to invest in players who will make a difference. It's not about how much a player costs I would be happy if we targeted younger players that had a sell on after a few years, an actual method of transfer activity instead of loan & free agents rebuilding every summer
