Leeds now willing to pay £20m for Dyer
David O'Leary is preparing to test Newcastle's resolve to keep Kieron Dyer by offering £20million for the England midfielder.
The Leeds manager, who has already had a £15m bid rejected, believes Dyer's pace and versatility could be the final piece in the jigsaw as he seeks to challenge Manchester United's Premiership domination.
Newcastle have insisted that Dyer is not for sale at any price and the 22-year-old, who missed the last three months of the season with a shin injury, is in no hurry to leave Tyneside - particularly as he believes, despite reassurances from Rio Ferdinand, that a perceived racist element among the Elland Road fans has yet to be rooted out.
Manchester United have made no secret of their own interest in Dyer and can offer the former Ipswich man the prospect of a Champions League campaign.
LIVERPOOL'S Christian Ziege has been bombarded with hate mail from Schalke fans after transfer talks with the Bundesliga club broke down. The German wing back, now a target for Spurs, denied his demand for £60,000 a week stalled the move. He said: 'They wanted a man on the left of defence. It's not my best position.'
GARY Pallister, plagued for years by a debilitating back problem, has finally retired. The former England and Manchester United star, now 36, said: 'This is a sad day for me. But I have been lucky to play my football at the highest level alongside many world-class players. I have many wonderful memories.'
PORTSMOUTH boss Graham Rix is lining up a £1m move for Celtic striker Mark Burchill - after clinching a £1.25m deal for giant QPR striker Peter Crouch.
Rix said: 'Peter is good, and will be even better. He reminds me of Tore Andre Flo.' Rix has also signed former Roma youngster Alessandro Zamperini on a free transfer.
PETER Reid is ready to make an offer for Everton's £2.5m-rated Portugal star Abel Xavier as he seeks to shore up the Sunderland defence.
Benfica have also registered an interest in the right back, who has been transfer-listed in the final year of his Everton contract in a bid to ease the club's mounting debts.

Following the UEFA Cup tie against Skoda Xanthi, Xavier was administered a drugs test and failed. On 23 November 2005, he was found guilty of using the anabolic steroid methandrostenolone (also known as dianabol). Although he has always denied any wrongdoing, the tribunal banned him from professional football for a period of 18 months
