Yes, he's one of the few with some credit in the bank and would be a cert to keep if we weren't lumbered with Parker. However, if for the same money we could replace him with two high-level Championship midfielders, one specialising in a defence and one more creative, then that would be a good tradeoff, since good old Steve is (apart from being merely one person!) not quite what is wanted in either respect.

He has attacking qualities of course, but they are more eye-for-goal than creative, and as for the defensive side of things, he means well, and battles away, but isn't a remotely reliable shield of the back four. There are lesser all-round players who'd do that job better.

As for scoring, well done Steve last season, and some contribution from midfield is of course needful, but a top-scorer playing in that position is simply not the formula for promotion.  It mainly needs a shedload of goals from forwards fed by a midfield that's creating openings through dribbling, speed and guile. Coupled with meanness at the back. Steve can help a bit with these things, but they aren't boxes he really ticks.

If affordable, I'm all for having him around as a good character and influence who would be a great asset for the bench. But a promotion outfit at Championship level will not have Sidwell 2014 Version as its midfield heartbeat. A pushed-on version of Chris David in front of a slightly better version of William Kvist, feeding a pushed-on Woodrow plus e.g. the rumoured guy from Ipswich....just maybe. We mainly need *specialists* at, or on the rise towards, their peak.

Out with the old and in with the new. He was part of the dire team that went down this season, why should we keep hold of any of them? Start again with mainly youth. Parker isn't going anywhere unfortunately, so just get some young legs beside him to improve the team.
Everything is difficult before it's easy!

I agree BigbadBilly, but I would keep Stockdale [obviously], Hangeland and Sidwell, and if all they other two did was talk to the young 'uns That might make the difference.

Nosy is on a 3 year deal so is not going anywhere, sidwell I think is a better player but is out of contract.money wise the club is being sensible and staying in the new financial climate.
If parker wasn't there then I think felix would have tried to resign him.

Ring Redknapp up hes got 129mill to spend now he'll probably give us 7.5m for parker and treble his wages

you lucky people

agreed, time for a real change in midfield, letting all our creative players go in January did us real harm and as we have Parker on contract for two more years and Tunnicliffe, the need is for a clever and stylish youngster to step up and shine, someone like Chris David maybe, if we can keep hold of him

Got to keep a spine of a team otherwise we face years in the wilderness - can't rebuild a team from absolutely nothing, that is pure naivety (IMHO)

It is also naive to assume sidwell is the answer in the championship. If we build a team around sidwell rather than without him we will end up in the wilderness anyway. He allegedly was our best player in a fulham side that was worse than lawrie sanchez's team in the worse bottom half of a table in years. Stockdale brede burn tunnicliffe/david a playmaker and a proven goalscorer. Thats the spine you need. Playing sidwell and parker will cause our spine to give way and we will end up finishing the season on crutches

Are we forgetting that a couple of seasons ago Sidwell was 4th choice. He is no better a player than then. It is just that the others that he is playing with are so poor.

I see it two ways, one is with Sidwell and Parker (if he remains) being there, it may cause Magath to lean to heavily on them to build the team around, and thus we don't move forward as a club. We may get promoted but it keeps the hole in the midfield we've seen since Danny Murphy left, however, if Sidwell or Parker are played as defensive kids, along side another or two promising attacking players, then each of them could provide the experience that we may need for what is likely to be a more youthful squad.

There are 46 matches next season in the Championship, we will need players and there will be matches and situations where having experience will help us without hindering the development of a younger squad. So I see a place for Sidwell but not as a focal point.

Keep tweeting him, hopefully we can keep him here.

Hasn't the club announced that they have released him ?????
the fact that they have not talked to him only proves that the mushroom treatment of Rene
was not a one off

We released Karagounis and Diarra last season and they came back, thing the released list is simply players at the end of there contracts that haven't been renewed yet, bit like Lampard at Chelsea he released but said he was going to talk to them after the world cup

Sure  but I  doubt that The G1nger Ninga will  stay on the shelve past 1st July  besides  Felix was not calling the shots back then.

Parker is the one to keep if it is just experience you want. Both are useless but does sidwell have that much experience. No where near as much as brede or parker. He hardly played at villa, played about 10 games for chelsea, never played for england and hardly played for us until the past two years. Reading was his main team but that was a verynlong time ago. Sidwell also never plays like he has experience either. Makes odd decisions on the pitch when a calm head is needed

What a stupid post! try watching the games ! leading goal scorer is he not but useless? fp.gif fp.gif

dannyboi-ffc

Leading goal scorer with 7goals. That suggests our strikers were useless and not that he was prolific. As a season ticket holder for the past 15 years I think ive seen enough games and more than enough of sidwell. Less assists than ruiz in more than double the games. More fouls given away than anyone else and surely as the only player to play in every game, he doesnt deserve to be branded a hero. He was 4/5th choice for a reason two years ago. We went down because players.like sidwell were given a vital role. Carry on giving him a big role and we will never return to the prem again. The man is a warrior, not a footballer

If the question is leader or Captain,  Parker is not the answer
If the question is Playmaker, Parker is not the answer
If the question is holding midfield player, Parker is not the answer
If the question is Defensive midfield player, Parker is not the answer
If the question is feeling/concern  for Fulham, Parker, hell no !!!!!!
Sidwell may not be  the answer,  but he is more Fulham gone than Parker will ever be ..............

have people misunderstood what I said or am I going crazy. Someone suggested we need sidwells experience. My response was parker and brede have alot more experience than him which they do.
Next I was told I was mad because sidwell was our top scorer which I replied to with a reasonable answer. You then reply this.

Just to confirm I said sidwell and parker are both useless and I want them both gone. Fact is we are stuck with parker, not sidwell. The club has done the right thing with steve as it would of been a disaster to be stuck with them both. Does that explain myself and kinda makes ur anti parker rant pointless as sidwell is also none of them things other than a captain. If hes captain u need to build the team around a crap player and the circle starts again. A new captain should be bought, brede just playing without the burden and sidwell and parker gone.
