World Cup: Fulham's Dejagah almost helps Iran to shock Argentina result

Iranian midfielder Ashkan Dejagah has penalty appeal turned down and header brilliantly saved before Lionel Messi scores winner for South Americans

Fulham's Ashkan Dejagah came close to inspiring Iran to one of the greatest World Cup shocks of all time against Argentina yesterday.

Dejagah was at the forefront of a positive Iranian performance against the South Americans before Lionel Messi broke their hearts in stoppage time with the only goal of the game.

But before that the Fulham midfielder came close to being the hero himself when in the second half he was involved in two of Iran's best moments.

First the 27-year-old had a call for a penalty turned down when he appeared to be fouled in the area by Pablo Zabaleta and then saw his header brilliantly tipped over by Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

It means Iran will need to beat already eliminated Bosnia and Herzegovina and hope the Argentine's can do them a favour against Nigeria in order to qualify from Group F.

Chelsea duo Kenneth Omerou and John Mikel Obi both started while team-mate Victor Moses was an unused substitute as the Nigerians beat Bosnia 1-0 to put themselves in the driving seat to join Argentina in the second round.

Mikel was booked while Omeruo played just over an hour as Peter Odemwingie's goal was enough to ensure Bosnia will be on the plane home.

Elsewhere, Chelsea's Andre Schürrle and former Old Meadonians, Barnet and Harrow Borough star, Albert Adomah were unused substitutes for Germany and Ghana respectively as the two teams drew 2-2 in Group G.

Reports: Arsenal could scout Bryan Ruiz against England

The Daily Express report that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could scout Fulham and Costa Rica maestro Bryan Ruiz on Tuesday.

Furthermore, Ruiz has claimed that he is hoping to impress Premier League clubs again when Costa Rica face off against England in the final Group D game at the World Cup, as it is his intention to remain in England despite an underwhelming stay at Fulham.

Ruiz scored the goal that broke English hearts as his winner against Italy condemned Roy Hodgson's men to an early exit from the World Cup before England were even given a chance to take on Costa Rica themselves, with the group minnows securing their progression into the second round for only the second time in their history.

He has endured a frustrating time in his career in England so far after failing to light up the Premier League during his time at Fulham – being sent out on loan to former club PSV Eindhoven for the second half of the season – but he is hoping to impress watching managers to second a second chance.

Ruiz told reporters, "I want to show the English what I am and what happened at Fulham is not real."

Sunderland are thought to be considering making a bid for the flamboyant attacker with Gus Poyet believed to be a fan, but he could face competition from Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger impressed with his relationship with current Gunner Joel Campbell on the international scene. Wenger is reported to be ready to scout the the attacker.

Bryan Ruiz has created four chances for Costa Rica in two games at the World Cup.

Arsenal, Sunderland to battle for Bryan Ruiz?

Arsenal and Sunderland are reportedly both considering a move for Fulham attacker Bryan Ruiz.

The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan with PSV Eindhoven, is believed to have no intention of remaining with the West Londoners in the Championship.

He is keen to join a Premier League club, which has alerted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and his Sunderland counterpart Gus Poyet, according to the Daily Express.

Both managers are at the World Cup in punditry roles and are said to have scouted the Costa Rica captain.

Ruiz joined Fulham from FC Twente during the summer of 2011.

Report: Fulham to sign Jason Davidson

Fulham have reportedly won the race to sign Australia left-back Jason Davidson.

The 22-year-old, who is currently with his country at this summer's World Cup, is available on a free transfer after running down his contract with Dutch side Heracles Almelo.

A number of European clubs had been linked with a move, but according to The Sun, Fulham have agreed terms with the defender over a move to Craven Cottage.

Davidson, who has made nine appearances for his country, joined Heracles from Pacos de Ferreira in 2012.

Davidson close to Fulham deal

Reports in the English press claim that Fulham have beaten a number of sides to sign Australia left-back Jason Davidson.

The 22-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract ran out at Dutch side Heracles Almelo. Davidson, who is currently on international duty with Australia, has been linked with moves elsewhere but it appears as if the Cottagers have won the race. He has reportedly agreed terms with the recently-relegated side and will make the move after the World Cup.

Earliest known picture of Fulham FC

This photo is of historical importance because it is the earliest known picture of Fulham FC, taken in 1887 when the club was still known as Fulham St Andrew's. I believe that it came from a scrapbook belonging to the late Henry Shrimpton, who lent it out in the 1940s and never got it back.

Only this faded cutting seems to survive but there are 13 people in this picture apart from Tom Shrimpton, Henry's brother. Most of them of them would have bought the team photo and perhaps someone reading this has a copy in the family collection, unaware of its significance.

Patrick Murdoch MB CM, Lillie Road (Club President), age 39 b. Kirkpatrick-Fleming
(Churchwarden at St Andrew's, GP and local politician), d. 1912
William Bolster ex-soldier (?)
(I have few facts about him except that he spent some time in the USA)
Tom Shrimpton, clerk, Haldane Road, age 16 b. Kensington
(One of four brothers who played for Fulham), d. 1951
Jack Howland, accountant, Lillie Road, age 21, b. Liverpool
(Team Captain), d. 30 November 1909
Fred Carter, plumber, Munster Road, age 18 b. Fulham
(Always known as Tubby though it is hard to see why)
Charles McKay, clerk, Jervis Road, age 21, b. Central London
(The club's umpire, as assistant referees were then known)
Fred Keefe, accountant, Pownall Road, age 18, b. Kensington
(A Roman Catholic in a CofE team), d. 1897
James Howard, innkeeper, Eight Bells Fulham (Club Vice-President), age 42
(Provided a changing room and refreshments), d. 1892

Front rows (from left)
Joseph Morrison, boiler-maker, Ancill Street, age 20
(Married at St Andrew's Church 24/1/1886), d. 1921
Will Hobson, insurance agent, Kilmaine Road, age 20, b. Kings Norton
(Known as 'Brum' to distinguish him from his brother Wilf)
Arthur Aram, carpenter, Burnthwaite Road, age 27, b. Paddington
(His brother Robert also played for Fulham), d. 1921
John May, plumber, Hannell Road, age 19, b. Fulham
(The club's outstanding keeper for over a decade), d. 1904
Tom Norman, carpenter, Pownall Road, age 23, b. Ipswich
(The club's first secretary)
Jack King, plasterer, Pownall Road, age 23, b. Westminster or Lambeth
(The first treasurer, played for the club from its earliest days till 1895)

I have written blogs about James Howard (2/8/12) and Will Hobson (30/10/12). I hope to write extensively about all the others.

Arsenal Scouting £10m World Cup Sensation

Black Cats also keen on Costa Rica star.

Arsenal and Sunderland are likely to consider moves to sign Fulham forward Bryan Ruiz this summer, according to The Express.

The 28-year-old Costa Rica international has been in fine form at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where his country have secured qualification from Group D courtesy of shock wins over Uruguay and Italy.

Ruiz scored the decisive goal in Friday's 1-0 victory over Italy and he has formed an impressive partnership with Arsenal's Joel Campbell, who will return to North London this summer after spending last season on loan at Olympiakos.

Fulham paid £10m for Ruiz when he arrived at Craven Cottage from FC Twente in August 2011, but they are expected to demand less than that to sell him following their relegation from the Premier League.

Ruiz had scored 35 goals in 65 league appearances for Twente, but he has been unable to produce top form for Fulham, scoring just eight times in 75 games in all competitions.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV, for whom he netted five Eredivisie goals in 14 outings.

Gunners boss Arsenal Wenger is thought to be keeping a keen eye on Ruiz, who is likely to lineup against England on Tuesday, while Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is known to be a big fan of the player.

Mitroglou hopeful of seeing Greece goal rush

Konstantinos Mitroglou believes that Greece can finally break their 2014 FIFA World Cup duck against Ivory Coast.

Greece head into Tuesday's final Group C contest with hopes of reaching the last 16, despite failing to find the net in their opening two games in Brazil.

A 3-0 loss to Colombia was followed by a spirited goalless draw versus Japan, a result that hardly seemed likely when captain Konstantinos Katsouranis was sent off in the opening period.

To have hopes of qualifying, though, striker Mitroglou knows that Greece must rediscover the Midas touch in front of goal, with only a win good enough.

"With the hard work we've been putting in and a little luck, the goals will come," he said.

The Fulham man is aware that Greece face an uphill task in the quest for victory, though.

"They have excellent players like (Didier) Drogba and (Yaya) Toure. But we have to look at what we are doing," added Mitroglou.

"The task is simple. We have to win."
