Preview: Fulham vs. Bolton Wanderers

It may still be very early in the Championship season, but both Fulham and Bolton Wanderers will know how important victory could be in Wednesday night's match at Craven Cottage.

The pair lie 23rd and 22nd respectively after poor starts to the campaign, with Fulham only registering their first win of the season at another struggler, Birmingham City, on Saturday.

Kit Symons remains in temporary charge of the Cottagers and another win over the Trotters in two days' time could further strengthen his chances of earning the top job on a full-time basis.

Like Fulham, the visitors have just one win to their name this season and Dougie Freedman will need to start picking up points soon otherwise he might be in danger of losing his job.

The Trotters' last away game was also in West London and Freedman will have enjoyed a lot of what he saw in the narrow League Cup defeat at Premier League leaders Chelsea.

After leaving out some of those who played well at Stamford Bridge, changes could be on the cards against Fulham, with Jermaine Beckford in line for a recall to lead the attack.

When the two sides last met, both were in the Premier League and Fulham have won their last three games against Bolton without conceding a goal.

Recent form

Fulham: LDLLLW

Fulham could be one game away from naming new manager - report

According to reports tonight, Kit Symons is one win away from being named the new Fulham manager after impressing as caretaker boss.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan continues to change managers at Craven Cottage after Felix Magath became the third boss to lose his job under Khan's ownership - which has so far only lasted around 14 months. Dutchmen Martin Jol and Rene Meulensteen were both axed last season before Magath arrived in January, but he couldn't keep Fulham in the top flight as they were back in the second tier for the first since their promotion in 2001.

Former Bayern Munich boss Magath had a history of tough fitness regimes and, unsurprisingly, alienating players, and that seemed to be the case at Fulham too as his side picked up just one point from the opening seven games of the season, with the 5-3 defeat at Nottingham Forest proving to be the final straw for Khan.

So German Magath was the latest to exit the Fulham revolving door, but who would be next in the Craven Cottage ejector seat? Former boss Jean Tigana was linked with a shock return to the club, whilst the likes of Steve Clarke, Tim Sherwood and Gianfranco Zola had all been linked with the post.

However, Khan was sensible - he let caretaker manager Kit Symons have a run in charge before making any decisions. The 43-year-old made over appearances for the club as a player, and was handed the reins on a temporary basis following Magath's departure.

Since Symons took charge, Fulham have lost once and won twice, which included beating Doncaster in the Capital One Cup and claiming their first Championship win of the season in a 2-1 win over Birmingham City. That win took the Cottagers off the foot of the table, and amidst speculation that the Fulham squad are far happier under Symons than they were under the stewardship of Magath, reports believe that Symons will be handed the job permanently if his Fulham side beat Bolton on Wednesday night.

Wanderers are struggling themselves with just five points from four games, which leaves them one place above Fulham in the table. It's certainly a winnable game, and if Symons can guide his side to three points, then he may well have secured himself the job permanently.

And The Next Fulham Manager Is ..?

Fulham sit second from bottom of the Championship table.

Bookmakers have already been speculating as to who will get the manager's job at Craven Cottage in the longer term. Symons himself is amongst the favourites with a best price of 9/2.

He is currently a member of the Wales coaching staff under Chris Coleman and before being appointed as caretaker he has been part of the setup at Fulham as manager of the under-21s. He also spent three years of his playing career and Craven Cottage; he knows the club as well as anybody and understands what needs to be done to resurrect the side.

In that aspect Symons has an advantage over other potential candidates for the job but he lacks experience, he has never held a manager's role permanently, with only three caretaker spells before this one. Two of those spells came at Crystal Palace, in 2003 and 2007, while the other was at Colchester in 2008. Given the dire situation Fulham find themselves in the board may deem it necessary to go for a manager with a great deal more experience than Kit Symons.

The current overall favourite with bookmakers is former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay, with a best price of 10/3 and a shortest of 7/4 as shown on oddschecker.

Mackay has been out of a job since leaving the Welsh club at the end of last year but he has great experience at Championship level that would be key to rescuing Fulham's season, previously managing Watford and guiding them to a safe mid-table finish before taking over at Cardiff and winning the division as well as guiding the team to a League Cup final in 2012.

Mackay has a proven ability when it comes to managing at this level and given his Cardiff side averaged less than one goal against per game throughout the 2012-13 league season, he would be capable of stabilising Fulham's current dismal run of form.

One longer priced candidate how could potentially surprise bookmakers by getting the job is Tony Pulis. Best price for the former Stoke and Crystal Palace boss to take the reins at Fulham is 20/1 but given his previous management record he is somebody the Fulham board should give serious consideration to if there is any chance at all of interesting him in the job.

Like Malky Mackay, Pulis knows what it takes to achieve success in the Championship having guided Stoke to promotion from the division in 2008. Perhaps more significant than achieving promotion is his record when it comes to managing teams at the lower end of the table.

Following that promotion with Stoke, Pulis went on to guide them to Premier League safety in 2009 and in subsequent seasons helped them to become an established top flight team.

However, even more impressive was the impact he made in such a short spell as manager of Crystal Palace at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Taking over as manager just before the halfway point of the season Pulis revitalised a squad that had been struggling to adapt after promotion, solidified the defence and turned potential relegations candidates into a safe mid-table side. That is exactly what Fulham need in their current predicament, having conceded nineteen goals in just eight Championship games they need someone to steady the ship and make them difficult to beat.

That is exactly what Tony Pulis would provide, he may not be renowned for his attractive style of play but he will get results, and that is what is required at the minute.

While it is currently unclear who will be the next permanent manager at Craven Cottage, one thing is certain. Whoever does take over will have a job on their hands to turn around what has been a completely abject start to the season.

Match preview: Fulham v Bolton Wanderers

Harry Engels
In the Championship, the games come thick and fast. So I'm going to try and avoid what people have been talking about constantly since the Derby game and focus upon the upcoming game against Fulham on Wednesday. That said, it's been a difficult few days for the club.

In an ideal world, I'd like to think that Bolton Wanderers can put the defeat against Derby County behind them and move forward and beat one of our fellow strugglers in Fulham on Wednesday.

Dougie Freedman and his team will have slight breathing space away from home, which will be needed because at the Macron it seemed that the atmosphere had turned rather sour. I would also hope that the fans would react well, and get behind the team at Craven Cottage. But, it's also down to the management and playing team to pull their finger out and put in a good display. I want to see some passion from a team playing in our historic white shirt.

As ever, expect chief tinkerer Dougie Freedman to tinker with the squad. I expect to see Darren Pratley come in for Owen Garvan, Beckford to join Joe Mason up front at the expense of Liam Feeney, and Neil Danns may come in for Mark Davies. I personally don't think this is the way to go. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'd like to see the good old traditional 4-4-2 played with Jay Spearing & Davies, with Chung-Yong Lee and Feeney on the wings, feeding Mason & Craig Davies. We are still without long absentees David Wheater, Liam Trotter & Adam Bogdan.

Fulham is actually one of two teams that are worse than ourselves this season. The other being Blackpool who are shocking. Managerless Fulham came from behind at the weekend to beat Birmingham City away from home, which will have no doubt inspired them coming into their home game against us. They lined up 4-4-2 (Diamond) at the weekend and I personally expect them to remain unchanged, as any winning team should.

The two players we should be wary of should be Ross Mcormack, on his day he can score goals for fun, and will be a handful for whoever our centre back pairing is. Scott Parker is the other one, the veteran midfielder is proven at this level & in the Premier Leauge and if Spearing doesn't play well expect Parker to dominate the midfield.

I think Wanderers need to take advantage of being away from home away from a chorus of boos and play like they did against Chelsea last week. If they do, I expect a comfortable win for Bolton... I know right, I'm crazy.

Roll on Wednesday.

Boa shoots his Bolt and is left spitting mad

Rewind: March 4, 2001, League Division One: Fulham 1-1 Bolton Wanderers

Oh dear! Boa Morte sees red against Bolton
Fulham were a spit off promotion to the top flight after a 33-year absence - although 'spit' might still be painful to Luis Boa Morte's ears.

The striker was sent off by referee David Laws after an ugly clash with Bolton's Robbie Elliott when tempers boiled over in this top-of-the-table clash.

Boa Morte retaliated after being fouled by Elliott and the players appeared to spit at each other.

Before the off: Boa Morte tackles Bo Hansen with Steve Finnan watching on
The Fulham hitman took the walk of shame in the 80th minute - just 22 minutes after he came on as sub. Elliott was booked as were Bolton defenders Colin Hendry and Paul Warhurst.

At the end as Boa broiled, it was seen as two points thrown away, but there again Fulham had a few to spare.

They would finish top 10 points clear of second place Blackburn, and with a record 101 under the stewardship of Jean Tigana.

Lee Clare bears down on Bolton keeper Tommy Wright
Bolton too would get promoted via the play-offs after they trounced Preston 3-0 at the Millennium Stadium.

But before tempers frayed, a one-sided first half saw Fulham had to wait before Barry Hayles scored from 15 yards only to see the lead cancelled when Per Frandsen equalised for Bolton in the 51st minute with a curling 25-yard free-kick.

Louis Saha hit the post in the fourth minute and John Collins did the same a bit later when it looked easier to score.

Simon Charlton and Dean Holdsworth cleared efforts off the line with Tommy Wright, on loan from Manchester City, having a debut to forget in Bolton's goal.

Saha and Hayles were doing everything but adding to the one goal, and Kit Symons and Lee Clark (whatever happened to them?) all put chances wide while Collins thumped the woodwork a second time as the result of a free-kick moved forward following Bolton dissent.

Hair today: Louis Saha is challenged by Paul Warhurst, with scorer Barry Hayles in the background
The BBC said: "Bolton, with just one win in the last six games and under pressure from Blackburn for the second spot, will be pleased with the point but they were extremely lucky to get it."

Fulham: Maik Taylor, Steve Finnan, Kit Symons, Andy Melville, Rufus Brevett, Lee Clark, Bjarne Goldbaek (Boa Morte 58); John Collins, Sean Davis, Barry Hayles, Louis Saha

Bolton: Tommy Wright, Gudni Bergsson, Colin Hendry, Robbie Elliott, Paul Warhurst, Simon Charlton, Gareth Farrelly (Michael Ricketts 50) Franck Passi, Per Frandsen, Bo Hansen (Nicky Summerbee 88), Dean Holdsworth (Ian Marshall 76)

Fulham buoyant for Bolton visit

Fulham have an unchanged squad for the visit of Bolton after finally breaking their league win duck at the weekend.

Defender Shaun Hutchinson is still suspended so caretaker boss Kit Symons is unlikely to tinker too much with the side which beat Birmingham 2-1 on Saturday.

One change could see full-back Kostas Stafylidis recalled the starting line-up after he came on at half-time with his side 1-0 down at St Andrew's.

Matt Smith returned from a three-match ban as an unused substitute against the Blues following his debut red card at Reading and is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench again, while fellow striker Adam Taggart (back) remains the only injury absentee.

Bolton's under-fire boss Dougie Freedman has no major new injury or suspension worries as his struggling side bid to end a run of four straight league defeats on the road.

Freedman recalled midfielder Jay Spearing, striker Joe Mason and defender Kevin McNaughton for Saturday's home defeat by Derby and must decide whether further changes are the way forward.

Max Clayton has yet to make his debut for the club, while fellow striker Jermaine Beckford and defender Tim Ream are among those pushing for recalls.

Goalkeeper Adam Bogdan (finger) and defenders David Wheater (back) and Marc Tierney (broken leg) are still out.

Hoogland spells out what Fulham must to do against Bolton

It's a game of two halves as Whites defender makes clear

Step up demanded: Hoogland
Tim Hoogland reckons Fulham have to be in Bolton's face for the entire 90 minutes tomorrow night – unlike the first half Birmingham on Saturday.

The Whites got off to a ragged start and trailed at the interval 1-0 before caretaker boss Kit Symons had a word but delightedly watched his team turn it around in the second period.

Hoogland was in the right place at the right time just past the hour to notch an equaliser, albeit with a large slice of luck.

The initial shot from Niko Bodurov was skewed, but a block and rebound later found the German defender sliding the ball home via a slight deflection.

"It got a little deflection, but you need a bit of luck," he said. "If you don't shoot, you don't score, and it was the turning point of the game.

If we were to have won 4-1 it would not have been a surprise."

Hoogland moved top joint scorer with three alongside Ross McCormack. Hugo Rodallega pounced to wrap a debut win, the man signed from Schalke in the summer reckons the cup is only half full.

"It's a tough league, the second half at Birmingham  was really great, but we have to remember it and play like that for 90 minutes in the next game."

Hoogland hunts complete performance
by DAN on SEPTEMBER 30, 2014

Tim Hoogland has urged his Fulham team-mates to put together a more complete performance against Bolton Wanderers after their come from behind victory at Birmingham on Saturday.

The German right back, who has switched to a defensive role again after a spell in midfield, has echoed the words of caretaker manager Kit Symons in calling for an end to the patchy displays that has characterised Fulham's slow start to life in the Championship.

It's a tough league, the second half at Birmingham was really great, but we have to remember it and play like that for 90 minutes in the next game.

Hoogland has proved an unexpected source of goals since his summer move from Schalke, with his crucial equaliser at St. Andrew's his third in eleven appearances for Fulham.

It got a little deflection, but you need a bit of luck. If you don't shoot, you don't score, and it was the turning point of the game. If we were to have won 4-1 it wouldn't have been a surprise.

Victory over Bolton at Craven Cottage tomorrow night could lift te Cottagers out of the Championship relegation zone.

Changing Moods At Fulham

Ben Weeks notes a gradual shift in the misery at Fulham...

Cold, miserable, 1-0 down at home to Wolves and with my worst idea of 'fan' sitting directly behind me, shouting clichéd obscenities at a struggling Fulham team for being too young, too rubbish, too black...

Not my favourite Wednesday evening, that one.

In some respects, it's hard to believe that this was only 2 months ago. Whilst Fulham still linger down near the foot of the Championship table – a dramatic fall in grace for a team in a European final not 4 years ago – it feels like a stranglehold of ineptitude and decay has been relinquished. Whilst the recovery is balanced on a knife-edge, Craven Cottage is showing signs of re-embracing it's image, that which defines Fulham to both it's own fans and those of other clubs for better or worse. The 'family feel' of the club is slowly returning due to a Manager, however temporary, that knows and responds to the crowd, players no longer being frozen out of the club and no sign of a cheese-wielding authoritarian maniac in sight.

With the change in boss and back-to-back wins for the first time since April, the mood is approaching optimism. Whites fans shouldn't kid themselves too much just yet though, because the performances are still inadequate both aesthetically and statistically overall given the talent available at the club.

The first half at Birmingham was appalling. A single shot on target, a single chance created and an over-reliance on long-balls from the back made for pretty dismal half-time reflection, but what we appear to have in Kit Symons is a manager with some level of motivational talent and an ability to make pro-active changes. I'm a big fan of Bryan Ruiz, but the introduction of Cauley Woodrow as a replacement for the Costa Rican brought in a final 30 minutes in which Fulham created a massive 8 chances and managed 9 shots on goal. That definitely isn't to say that Bryan is the problem and Woodrow the solution, but that Symons recognised in this particular game a need for energy and direct passing in the final-third, which Cauley brought in abundance (Note that not a single one of Fulham's chances was created from their own half).

I never did quite understand the level of disillusionment that a large section of Spurs fans felt with Tim Sherwood. I sympathised somewhat with the unmistakeable awareness that he was not the right manager to really push the perennially-underachieving club on to better things, but the apathy? I get it now. When a man who is so consciously at odds with the values of a club becomes so key in defining it's identity, it becomes nigh-impossible to retain pride in representing it.

Fulham fans can only hope Shahid Khan keeps that in mind, as he conducts his "personal search" for the next poor soul.

Team news: Chris Herd fit for Fulham trip

Australian international available for selection after sitting out the weekend's game
Bolton Wanderers are set boosted by the return of loanee Chris Herd for the midweek visit to Fulham.

The Australian international, who recently joined on a temporary basis from Aston Villa, sat out the weekend's game against Derby at Macron Stadium.

But after shrugging off a calf complaint Dougie Freedman confirmed at his pre-match press conference that Herd is in line to feature at Craven Cottage.

Adam Bogdan (finger), Liam Trotter (hamstring), Marc Tierney (leg), David Wheater (back) and Sanmi Odelusi (knee) all remain sidelined.

Club Statement

Chairman Shahid Khan today named a five-person search committee to provide guidance and leadership in identifying and reviewing candidates to serve as the next First Team Manager of Fulham Football Club.

Khan said two weeks ago that he will lead the search and ultimately appoint the position, but would seek counsel from qualified football people from within, close to or outside the Fulham organisation. In the case of all five committee members, knowledge of and respect for the traditions and standards of Fulham was a must for consideration.

"I've got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham," Khan said. "They each bring something similar, and yet unique, to the search. They understand what we want to achieve and they're committed to the process. And they very much respect Fulham. They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the Club. And we will."

The members of the committee, in alphabetical order:

David Daly.  Daly is Senior Director of Club and Federation business at Nike. He is a lifelong Fulham fan who, as a child, regularly attended matches in the Hammersmith End and continues to be a Season Ticket Holder from his office in Amsterdam. Daly's keen understanding of the Fulham culture and professional experience in the world of football will offer a distinctive point of view in the managerial search.

Huw Jennings.  Jennings has more than 20 years of experience of developing young talent for the professional game. He is responsible for managing the Category One-ranked Fulham Academy programme through the U21 level, covering areas from player acquisition and contracts, staff engagement and deployment among many other important duties. Jennings' views on ensuring continued player development at the First Team level will be valuable in the managerial search.

Brian McBride.  A popular captain at Fulham and hero for the United States men's national team, McBride remains linked to the international game and his passion for Fulham is as vibrant as ever. Given the rich history of U.S. talent at Fulham, McBride's service to the Chairman and search committee will strengthen that connection as Fulham rebuilds for the future and ultimately eyes global growth.

Danny Murphy.  The spirited former captain at Fulham and based in London, Murphy is only recently removed from his playing career and therefore offers an important point of view on what will work best for a manager in today's football environment and, in particular, at a club with the tradition and respect as Fulham. Murphy's love for Fulham and desire to contribute to his former club are both unqualified.

Niall Quinn.  A former Ireland national team star, Quinn briefly attended the Fulham Academy before playing 17 seasons in English football with Arsenal and Manchester City before landing at Sunderland, where he would forge an impressive career as a player, manager and chairman. In his first season as chairman, in 2006-2007, Quinn led the Black Cats back into the Premier League and kept the club there for six seasons. Quinn was heralded at Sunderland for his ability to connect community with club.

All five committee members spoke last week with Khan, and all but McBride met in London within the past few days with Mark Lamping, the president of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League and a non‑executive director on the Fulham Board of Directors. Khan met with Daly last month in London, and Khan and Lamping met with McBride during the summer at a United States men's national team match in Jacksonville.

Last week, Khan told Kit Symons, the current Caretaker Manager, that he is considered a candidate to assume the role of First Team Manager on a full-time basis.

"But this will be an exhaustive, thorough and deliberate process," Khan said in his programme notes on Saturday, Sept. 20. "No decisions will be made for the sake of deadlines or convenience. I plan to summon a number of qualified advisors for input, some within or close to the Fulham family and others who will bring a perspective from outside the Club. In the end the decision will be mine, but the choice will be made with the benefit of excellent and highly respected counsel. This process is already underway and I look forward to tackling the challenge and opportunity ahead."

Khan names five-man committee to find new Fulham boss
by DAN on SEPTEMBER 30, 2014

Shahid Khan has appointed a five-man committee to help him find Fulham's permanent successor to Felix Magath.

The Fulham chairman had promised 'a thorough and exhaustive search' in his programme notes immediately after the sacking of the German coach a fortnight ago and has stayed true to his word, despite caretaker manager Kit Symons' impressive start. Khan's committee comprises of Nike senior director David Daly, head of the Fulham Academy Huw Jennings, former Fulham captains Brian McBride and Danny Murphy and the former Arsenal, Sunderland and Manchester City striker Niall Quinn.

Khan said in a club statement released this afternoon:

I've got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham. They each bring something similar, and yet unique, to the search. They understand what we want to achieve and they're committed to the process. And they very much respect Fulham. They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club.  And we will.

The chairman told Kit Symons last week that he will be considered as a candidate to take on the job on a full-time basis.

Fulham: Danny Murphy and Brian McBride help manager search

Former Fulham players Danny Murphy and Brian McBride have been included on a five-man committee to help owner Shahid Khan find a new manager.

The Whites sacked Felix Magath earlier this month, with Under-21 boss Kit Symons placed in caretaker charge.

Symons has won two of his three games in charge and has declared an interest in taking the job full-time.

Ex-Sunderland striker Niall Quinn, academy boss Huw Jennings and fan David Daly will also assist Khan.

Daly is a Fulham season-ticket holder who works as a senior director of sports company Nike in the Netherlands.

Fulham chairman Shahid Khan:
"They know this is a special job and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club."

The five-person committee will provide American billionaire Khan with "guidance and leadership in identifying and reviewing candidates" to take over at Craven Cottage.

"I've got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham," Khan said in a statement on the Fulham website.

"They each bring something similar, and yet unique, to the search.

"They understand what we want to achieve and they're committed to the process. And they very much respect Fulham.

"They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club. And we will."

Magath, who won the Bundesliga three times in his native Germany, was sacked with Fulham bottom of the Championship, having taken one point from their opening seven games of the season.

The 61-year-old had been unable to save the west London club from relegation last season, having been appointed manager in February.

Symons has won two of his three games in charge since being appointed Fulham's caretaker manager

On becoming caretaker manager, Symons, who spent three years as a player at Fulham and has had spells as a scout and a youth coach, said "no-one understands the fabric of this club better than me".

Khan, who bought Fulham in the summer of 2013 and also owns NFL side Jacksonville Jaguars, has already informed the former Wales international that he is a candidate to become manager full-time.

Murphy spent five seasons at Fulham, making more than 200 appearances, and after Magath's sacking said he would be interested in taking the job himself, while former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has also expressed his availability.

Former USA international McBride scored 40 goals during a four-year stay at Craven Cottage, while Quinn was in Fulham's academy before a successful career with Arsenal, Manchester City, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland.

The hunt for red October (no, that doesn't work, does it?)

"A committee is like an animal with four back legs" – George Smiley, quoting Spymaster Karla, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carre

Nevertheless, a 5 man "find the next Fulham manager" committee is what we have. Shahid Khan has noticed that post Hodgson we've made a series of poor decisions and now intends to do things differently. Well done him.

There's a fan on board, one David Daly, but not just any fan. Daly is a senior director at Nike.

Huw Jennings is included, which is good and acknowledgement of what's most important for this club for the next few seasons.

Brian McBride has always seemed like a nice man. I'm not clear what Brian will be bringing to the table, which sounds a lot harsher than it's meant to. Another perspective probably, which is fine. McBride's a bright man and probably a sensible addition here.

Danny Murphy is very bright and clearly 'gets' Fulham. My reading of him is that he's quite conservative in his footballing beliefs and would be the kind to advocate a British manager where possible, but I have nothing to base this on. He would be well connected within the game and could 'sound out' possible candidates on the grapevine.

Niall Quinn seems like a footballing good egg and has been in the dressing room and the boardroom, and, let's face it, seen some good examples of how these things can go wrong while at Sunderland.

Will these five wise men come up with an answer to Fulham's woes? Maybe, maybe not, but Khan earns points for at least going about all this in a transparant and outwardly sensible fashion. The alternative could have left him open to various unwanted accusations, so choosing a team of respected (which they all are, more or less) experts to lead the process makes every sense.

Unless I'm misreading the situation it's not lovely for the CEO, but I think we were sort of getting that.

Me, I hope Kit Symons gets a bit longer. Amid all the excitement is the simple fact that under him we've shown capabilities of winning football matches, and if we haven't quite resembled Brazil 1970 yet, then perhaps it's not that easy to turn around a team that's been mistreated so. My preference would be for Kit to keep the job until such a point as he proves he isn't up to it, at which point the league of extraordinary gentlemen step in with their dossier of possibilities and we recruit based on that.

But we'll see, eh?

Fulham name Danny Murphy, Brian McBride, and Niall Quinn in five-man committee to help find new manager
Chairman Shahid Khan says he has the "right five men" to move the club forward after sacking Felix Magath

Fulham have taken the drastic step of appointing a five-man committee to help choose the club's new manager, even though caretaker Kit Symons is in pole position for the job.

Shahid Khan, the Fulham chairman, has enlisted the help of former players Danny Murphy and Brian McBride, ex-Sunderland forward Niall Quinn and academy director Huw Jennings to lead the search for Felix Magath's successor.

David Daly, a Fulham fan and director at Nike, completes the group in a move from Khan that underlines the Championship club's determination to avoid repeating the disastrous appointments of Magath and Rene Meulensteen.

Murphy retired from playing last year and has made no secret of his desire to land his first managerial post at Craven Cottage, but now finds himself in the unusual position of choosing the next manager.

Khan has insisted the move will benefit Fulham, who only recorded their first league win of the season at Birmingham City last weekend.

"I've got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham," he said. "They each bring something similar, and yet unique, to the search. They understand what we want to achieve and they're committed to the process. And they very much respect Fulham. They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club. And we will."

Quinn is no stranger to the process of appointing managers, having been chairman at Sunderland from June 2006 to October 2011.

"They recognised that I helped to do something right up at Sunderland some years ago," Quinn said on Sky Sports, "and they're looking for some outside help alongside four other Fulham stalwarts, to form the criteria and form the best list possible to come up with the right man for the job at Fulham. It's a very important time."

Fulham are on their sixth manager in four years – and the sense of farce surrounding the club was encapsulated last week when it was revealed that Magath recommended that former captain Brede Hangeland rub cheese on a leg injury and that he used to hold staring contests with his players.

Khan has made it a priority for the next manager to utilise the club's highly-regarded academy, which should further enhance the claims of Symons. The former Fulham defender has coached both the under-18s and under-21s teams and has significant support both in the boardroom and the current squad.

Although he lost his first game in charge, he masterminded wins against Doncaster Rovers in the Capital One Cup and the 2-1 victory against Birmingham.

Khan has admitted that Symons is a candidate and the 43-year-old will further boost his hopes with a win over Bolton Wanderers tonight. He said: "I'm never happy with just winning a game unless we win it exactly the right way. I want everything, I can be a bit of a miserable so-and-so because I'm never satisfied."

Danny Murphy and Niall Quinn on Fulham 'managerial search committee'
• Chairman Shahid Khan names five-man committee
• Brian McBride, Huw Jennings and David Daly also involved
• Kit Symons restates his case for job after win
• Felix Magath: My next managerial job will be in England

Shahid Khan has named a five-person "managerial search committee" to help him fill the Fulham post left vacant by Felix Magath's sacking.

The owner, Khan, retains overall control of recruitment but will "seek counsel from qualified football people from within, close to or outside the Fulham organisation".

One such person named, Danny Murphy, recently said Magath had shown others how not to run a club. Murphy had seemingly shown interest in the job but joins Brian McBride as one of two former Fulham captains on the committee.

Also involved is Niall Quinn, who briefly attended the club's academy before signing professional terms with Arsenal. The remaining two members are the academy director, Huw Jennings, and the season-ticket holder David Daly, a senior director at Nike chosen for his "keen understanding of the Fulham culture and professional experience in the world of football".

"I've got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham," Khan said. "They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club – and we will."

The caretaker manager Kit Symons, who oversaw Fulham's first victory of the season at Birmingham, has been told by Khan he is considered a candidate for the role full-time.

However, in his programme notes for the club's game against Blackburn on 20 September, Khan said: "This will be an exhaustive, thorough and deliberate process. No decisions will be made for the sake of deadlines or convenience. I plan to summon a number of qualified advisors for input, some within or close to the Fulham family and others who will bring a perspective from outside the club.

"The choice will be made with the benefit of excellent and highly respected counsel. This process is already under way and I look forward to tackling the challenge and opportunity ahead."

Fulham can pile more pressure on under-fire Bolton boss

Symons ready to lock horns with former Crystal Palace team-mate Freedman

This way: Kit Symons directs operations
Kit Symons is hoping to heap more misery on his old pal Dougie Freedman when Fulham host fellow strugglers Bolton tomorrow night.

Saturday's win at Birmingham City lifted the Cottagers off the foot of the Championship table, while Wanderers dropped into the bottom three after suffering their sixth defeat in eight games.

Symons knows under-fire Freedman from their time together at Crystal Palace, but friendships will be put to one side when their sides scrap for three vital points.

Under pressure: Bolton boss Dougie Freedman

He said: "I played with Dougie at Palace and then I took over as caretaker manager when he was still playing.

"He's a very bright lad, who is very ambitious and desperate for his team to do well. He will be hurting at the moment, as I was watching Fulham at the start of the season.

"They will roll their sleeves up and be tough to beat. They've not had a good time and have been changing things around to try and find the right formula that works for them.

"We're not sure what to expect in terms of formation or style of football. But they will be trying to come up with a plan to cause us an upset."

Temporary boss Symons will be among the names considered by Fulham's new five-man committee tasked with finding Felix Magath's successor.

But Freedman thinks his former team-mate deserves a crack at the role on a permanent basis.

He said: "His time has come where he should be given an opportunity. He has nothing to lose."
