can you gain citizenship without renouncing then?

I don't think I can, but don't want to either.
It's of little benefit for me.  I already qualify for a full pension and everything else.

There's 2 things I can't do:
1/. Stand for public office
2/. Vote - really  :0)

During the ceremony (assuming you pass the exam) I understand you have to renounce other citizenships and 'pledge allegiance to the stars and stripes"

As far as I'm concerned "Jerusalem" is still my national anthem and the Union Jack (despite Millibrands BS) is still my national flag

Thanks, Roger, that sounds interesting. I hadn't realised it was so historic. I have a passing interest in the US civil war (Jackson sounds quite a bloke) and I once met a couple from Manassas half way up a mountain in Scotland. When I expressed interest, they told me that it's a dump and that the station got burned down (Manassas, that is, not Scotland, however there are parts...). How ironic that Richmond USA should be such a contrast to Richmond Surrey! I also like bluegrass music as a bit of a change from the normal diet of English, Irish and Scottish. It must be nice to hear it in its natural environment.

As you say, there are good and bad wherever and most yanks I've met on my travels have been great - though I did meet some Bush supporters in Prague.

If we have digressed a little from Bryan Ruiz, maybe we should just mention pond sludge to bring back a bit of legitimacy!

Coincidence mentioning Manassas, yes it is a shithole another neon jungle.
The little town is nice but I didn't know the station had been burnt down.
Steven Stills and Chris Hillman (The Byrds) formed a group called "Manassas"
and the album cover is the band on the station.
Being a bit of a history-type person myself I went there once and had a photo taken
where the band were standing.
Daft I know.

Richmond is so named (by Slave Owner - William Byrd) because the view from the hill over looking the James River is very similar to the view from Richmond Hill, Surrey looking to the left of the river where it swoops around to the right.

Union Flag, apparently Jack is for boats/shipping, although that supposition is challenged by some.

Roger, your English? I never would have known. You sound just like a southern bell what with  the grits, sarsaparilla and the Stars & bars tattooed  on your chest.
Its not that I could and others couldn't.
Its that I did and others didn't.
