Kit Symons: 'Fulham will learn from mistakes'

Kit Symons has told his Fulham players to learn their lesson from Friday's 5-0 demolition by Watford at Craven Cottage.

Almen Abdi opened the scoring on 15 minutes before a red card for goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli four minutes later gave the Cottagers a "mountain to climb".

Troy Deeney converted the resulting penalty, before adding two more to seal his hat-trick later in the clash, and Symons says that his troops paid the price for a poor start.

"You've got to learn from it and there's quite a lot we can learn from that," he told Sky Sports News. "There is a lot of hard work and a lot of improving to be done.

"We started very poorly and Watford came out all guns blazing. We gave a way bad goal and then the sending-off makes life difficult. We had a mountain to climb.

"After the break there was a wonder strike and a sloppy late goal, but the players showed good character in the second half."

Fulham, who sit 16th in the Championship table, 10 points adrift of the playoff spots, travel to Elland Road for a clash with Leeds United next Saturday.

'Leeds will love playing against Kiraly' - Fulham fans react on Twitter to Watford loss

The Cottagers are not looking forward to facing Leeds next weekend with their current first-choice goalkeeper suspended...

Fulham fans could be forgiven for thinking a 5-0 defeat to Watford is the sum of their problems this morning.

As many supporters in west London have pointed out, however, Marcus Bettinelli's sending off against Watford means things are even worse: the Cottagers will be without their main goalkeeper when they travel to Leeds next weekend.

Gabor Kiraly, 38, was the man who replaced Bettinelli in goal and his performance against the Hornets did little to fill Fulham fans with confidence.

In fact, they are now dreading the prospect of Kiraly facing Leeds United...

"You've got to learn from it and there's quite a lot we can learn from that,'' Fulham boss Kit Symons told Sky Sports after the heavy defeat. "There is a lot of hard work and a lot of improving to be done.

"We started very poorly and Watford came out all guns blazing. We gave a way bad goal and then the sending-off makes life difficult. We had a mountain to climb.

"After the break there was a wonder strike and a sloppy late goal, but the players showed good character in the second half.''

Ross McCormack, of course, left Leeds for Fulham in the summer, meaning there is sure to be heavy interest in the Championship clash between the two sides. If Kiraly plays in goal, however, Fulham fans on Twitter after last night's game wondered if Leeds United will have a field day...

Fulham goalkeeper apologises to fans after 5-0 demolition by Watford

Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has apologised to fans through Twitter, after being sent off against Watford last night.

Slavisa Jokanovic's Watford side won 5-0 against Kit Symons' Fulham in what was a performance to forget for the home side.

Hornets forward Troy Deeney scored a hat-trick and Almen Abdi scored a brace, including a 20-yard stunner, in what was a fantastic night for Watford, which they hope will trigger a change in form after not fulfilling expectations this season.

Keeper Bettinelli added to Fulham's woes after being sent off early on at Craven Cottage. He tweeted: "Absolutely gutted about tonight... Apologies to all the boys and the fans tonight."

Watford manager Jokanovic was delighted with the performance, telling the BBC: "After a bad November we have started December better. It was very close to a perfect performance after some bad results.

"We played a fantastic game. I must be happy, I expect my players and supporters go home happy."

Meanwhile, Fulham boss Kit Symons said that major improvement was needed after the poor display, also telling the BBC: "There's quite a lot we can learn from that. There is a lot of hard work and a lot of improving to be done.

"We started very poorly and Watford came out all guns blazing. We gave away a bad goal and then the sending-off makes life difficult. We had a mountain to climb."

The result see's Watford go into a play-off position in the Sky Bet Championship table, whereas Fulham are left languishing in 16th position in the table.

Coming Up - FA Cup 3rd Round Draw!

Okay, we got royally stuffed last night, a stuffing that to be brutally honest, we deserved.

But these things happen and there is nothing we can do about it until we take to the field of play again.

However, in the meantime, there is the small matter of the draw for the 3rd round of the FA Cup looming.

This weekend the 2nd round ties are played and come Monday, at 19:00 hours, we`ll all be tuning in to see who Fulham draw in the 3rd round.

The draw will be televised live on BBC 2 and the numbered ball to look out for is 17.

I wonder just who`ll we get and whether it`ll be a tie at Craven Cottage or a tie away from home!

Grimmer's Assessment

Jack Grimmer admits the Whites will have to work hard to put their 5-0 defeat to Watford behind them, but is confident that with the team spirit in place at the moment, the result will be just a 'bump in the road'.

"Obviously this isn't just a loss, it's a very sour one to take," he told the official website. Especially being at home and for the fans. It's difficult for everyone to take, but we need to put it behind us and focus on the next game, get in a good week's training and be ready to get back out there."

Already one goal down and playing with 10 men after 17 minutes when Marcus Bettinelli was sent off for a foul on Matej Vydra, Grimmer says it's the team as a whole who will need to review their performance on the day.

"It was always going to be hard when Marcus got sent off," continued Grimmer. "It wasn't through any fault of his own, he's got to go for the ball. Over the last few weeks he's saved us points and been phenomenal. Against Watford it was the whole team in general. You can't pick out any players. The whole team needs to do better.

"But we gave it our all. That's something that I've had since playing as a kid at Aberdeen. No matter what the score or what way the game's going you give everything you've got until the final whistle.

"I think the boys dug in during the second half, but we'll have go back and go over it all, learn from our mistakes and then get up and go again against Leeds. And we will. The boys in general have been picking up some results and draws and they were finally getting us back to where we expect to be, so I believe it's just a little bump in the road."

The result comes in start contrast to a confident 2-1 victory against Brighton Hove & Albion the week before, which was also Grimmer's First Team debut for the Whites.

He added: "I was still on a high from the Brighton match and we were looking to carry that on against Watford, especially for me in my home debut playing in front of the home fans, but it just didn't go that way for us."

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn reveals Giuseppe Bellusci missed Ipswich clash with hamstring injury

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn has revealed that Giuseppe Bellusci was missing from the Ipswich Town clash today due to a hamstring injury, and also admitted that he felt it was best to stick with Stephen Warnock as captain.

The Championship outfit were defeated 4-1 by Ipswich on Saturday afternoon, after goals from Daryl Murphy (2), David McGoldrick and Christophe Berra were enough to grab the three points at Portman Road.

Bellusci was left out of the game with Jason Pearce coming in for the defender, but manager Redfearn believes he could be back for the Fulham clash, while he also opted to stick with Warnock with the captaincy following the Derby clash.

Leeds defeated league leaders Derby last week, but they were unable to build on the big win and were confidently beaten on Saturday by Ipswich.
