Can anybody explain to me(as an old git) when and why did forwards became strikers and they strike a ball as to shot with it? Please

When the balls got lighter.
Now they don't weigh as much as a shot-put.

The first time I heard it was after the 1966 World Cup when most of the league was ready to copy Alf Ramsey's 4-3-3. "Inside Forwards" and "wing backs" kind of disappeared and the concept of attacking midfielders came to fore. With fewer true wingers about, there had to be some way to identify the person whose main job it was to put the ball into the net. They got called strikers and that was that. I'm thinking I first read it in a match report about 1967 or 68 in a headline in a Sunday paper that referred to "the Sunderland Strikers." I was confused because I thought they were still the Black Cats.

About the same time centre halves became centre backs. Wing halves became midfielders and wingers became invisible.

I read the title and thought "oh oh...moderating required" but fortunately not! Back to my bangers and mash :)

So anyway what's your thoughts on False Nines?

Rant? That has to be the kindest rant I've ever read lol. I don't have the answer to your question but at least I'm referring to the title of the thread so it's not a complete waste of your time to read.

I'd love to hear your slightly disappointed post;
"I thought he was a lovely bloke but didn't always wash the dishes. Left them to soak instead"!

And when did "batsmen" become "batters"

And when did "attack" become "Oh-fence" and "defence" become "DEE-fence"

I'm guessing you have seen the American football fans who hold up signs. One bloke holds up the letter 'd' the other a small picket fence. Very Monty pythonesque.

So, basically, you said in one line what it took me 6 lines to say and you said it better.
