He needs to play for us. Symons saying he is 'protecting' him is rubbish. Stick him on the pitch, he'll soon toughen up. He's being absolutely wasted.

Along with a long term contract. We need to at least be able to get some top money for him, currently we'd get a lot of change from £10m I feel.

Wasn't there talk recently of him being offered a new contract? I can't believe we've let him get down to 1 year left and not secured him on a longer one. New contract and some playing time, at least then when he goes we will get a decent price!

He doesn't deserve to be sat on the bench, sometimes not even on the bench, for a team struggling in The Championship. He deserves to be playing and gaining game time experience.

I thought he had  signed an extension to his contract to 2017/18 earlier this season.

2016 according to this: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-roberts/profil/spieler/225452
@rweller

MJG

His contract runs to summer of next year and have never seen it officially put that there was an extension option in place, although Symons did say they were talking/offering him one.

Fact that he did not sign a new one right after his 18th birthday in feb made me worry and forget the £15M we were quoting last year, would be 4-5 max if we are lucky with addons.

nose

we have been so poor.... he is talented..... he doesn't feature, how stupid is that?

Max Headroom

the only way we would get a lot this summer is if there was a bidding war for him. If he goes, I will just be gutted not to have seen more of him in a Fulham shirt. Shame on Fulham

GrahamG

It's not very bright to keep him on the bench and not even secure a longer contract for him. The only reason (unless Kit thinks he isn't good enough!) for not playing him would be if we were protecting our investment and it doesn't look like we are even doing that. Absolute craziness, that hardly ever gets a mention due to the sea of craziness we've been drowning in for the past 3 years. Kit - can we at least see Patrick play a couple of games, before he's sent off to get splinters in his backside from sitting on another club's bench?

FPT

I don't think there's a reason to panic, and I also don't think he should be playing much more than he has been.

Huw Jennings on development:

"You can't force it," he says. "There's got to be the right stepping stones. If we take Dan Burn, who's played two games for the first team, his stepping stone started at Darlington, where we identified his potential. We then developed him in our way, then he plays for Yeovil in League One. Then he goes to Birmingham, a club that's a bit bigger. Now he's back at Fulham for a few games. It's fascinating to see the way he's progressed. At club level people want players in a team before they're ready for it.

"If I reflect back on the period with Kerim Frei, he got into the team a bit early as a 17-year-old and instantly the crowd took to him because he's a dribbler and he's exciting to watch. But things didn't go as well for Kerim as people hoped and, reflecting back, we forced him into the team a bit too early. As a result he missed out on some of those steps."

All good stuff from Jennings and hes right, BUT one year left does not give us many options.

bog

It will be heart braking to see him move after hardly getting a game for us. Come on Symons play him. Owen was at it when he was 17 (football)

Lighthouse

He just seems far too light weight. On a windy day he has trouble not floating away on the breeze of expectation.

Agreed. If the club believe that Pat is worthy of the patience, time, and monetary investment for taking all these necessary steps, then why allow the contract to wind down so far so early in that development???

It's not all clubs fault. You can only offer a certain length of contract when under 18,which they did. Once he turned 18 in Feb you offer a new one to the length you can agree.
Even back in Feb he was not getting games so no surprise he's not signed an extension.

BedsFFC

I desperately want him to play. Yes, he is small but he can beat a man and win a pen.

That said, I think I understand the reasoning for not playing him. Let's be honest, he makes a few mistakes in our current predicament and gets a few groans etc, it could have an impact on him.

I think the planning would be to wait till the season is safe and then get him playing. Sadly, god knows when the season is going to be safe.

I understand that it's a negotiation ( thanks for the bit of insight into youth contracts ) and that it's a two way street with player and club. I just hope that the club is putting it's best foot forward with him. I happen to believe that there have been more opportunities to get him 1st team minutes to ensure that he knows that he has a better chance at developing here than with a "big" club. Saying that, I don't believe that he's done enough with his opportunities to earn the demand for playing time that he enjoys within the fan base.

No problem. The max length of contract to a 17 year old is 3 years, The contract has to end in the summer so he signed in Feb 2014 at 17 and you would have thought three years that's to summer 2017. Well no,  because that's over the three years,  so max he could get is to summer of 2016.
