• Money likely to be made available for signings

Fulham are confident Martin Jol will be appointed as their new manager within days, after the Dutchman signalled he is willing to leave Ajax and move to Craven Cottage. Negotiations with Jol and Ajax continued tonight and although Fulham will travel to Sweden tomorrow for a pre-season training camp without a manager, the club are hopeful that Roy Hodgson's successor will be in place for the friendly against Halmstad on Thursday.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the former England manager who took charge of Ivory Coast at the World Cup, had also been in the running for the position, but Jol was top of the club's shortlist.

Fulham held positive talks with the 54-year-old Dutchman before the weekend and it now appears a matter of when and not if he will be welcomed as their new manager, with the London club putting together an attractive financial package to match his salary at Ajax as well as providing assurances that money will be available for signings.

Jol's appointment at Craven Cottage is likely to be welcomed by Fulham's supporters in the wake of Hodgson's departure to Liverpool. Although Jol's three‑year spell in charge of Tottenham Hotspur ended in 2007 with him being sacked and replaced by Juande Ramos, he came close to bringing Champions League football to White Hart Lane and was a popular figure with the club's fans as well as the players because of his management style.

His interest in the Fulham position has been greeted with surprise in the Netherlands, where many had expected him to stay on at Ajax for at least another season, especially as they are preparing for a Champions League qualifier. Jol took over only last year but he has become increasingly frustrated with the constraints that have been placed upon him because of Ajax's financial problems.

Gregory van der Wiel, the Holland right‑back, is set to join Bayern Munich and there is speculation that Luis Suárez, the prolific centre-forward who was part of the Uruguay team who reached the World Cup semi-finals, will also depart, with little of the money raised likely to be available for players.

Jol has always talked warmly of his time in England, including his spells as a player in the 80s with West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City, and the period he spent in charge of Spurs. His name was linked to Fulham not long after his dismissal at Tottenham but Jol withdrew his interest in the post and later took over at Hamburg. Fulham's latest pursuit of Jol, however, looks like being more successful, with the club optimistic that an agreement can be reached over the next few days.

Martin Jol is set to be named as Fulham's new manager later this week after the club opened talks with Ajax on Sunday night.

The 54-year-old former Tottenham coach has had preliminary talks with Fulham but will meet again later this week to finalise a deal.

Fulham are not expected to make an announcement ahead of their pre-season tour to Sweden today but Jol will join the squad before the weekend.

Jol, who managed Tottenham between 2004 and 2007, was preferred to Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson while Lee Clark, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Slaven Bilic were also considered.

FROM THE BBC

Martin Jol is set to be named as Fulham's new manager later this week, BBC Sport understands.

The 54-year-old Ajax coach has had preliminary talks with the London club but will speak to Fulham officials later this week to negotiate a deal.

Jol managed Tottenham between 2004 and 2007 and will replace Roy Hodgson, who joined Liverpool on 1 July.

Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had also been linked with the vacancy at Craven Cottage.

There will be no official appointment before the Fulham squad leave for their 10-day pre-season tour to Sweden on Monday but Jol is expected to fly out to join the party.

United States coach Bob Bradley and Switzerland's Ottmar Hitzfeld were other names in the running, but Hitzfeld ruled himself out of contention and a statement from the United States Soccer Federation outlined its intention to extend Bradley's current contract.

I really hope that this manager roller coaster is coming to a close - Martin Jol was who I wanted from the off

Jol, who was sacked by Spurs in October 2007, still owns a house in England and reports have suggested the Dutchman would be given rolling contract.

Although Fulham reached the Europa League final in May, Ajax will be playing Champions League football in September providing they come through qualifying.

They were pipped to the Dutch league title last season by FC Twente, who were managed by former England boss Steve McClaren.

Eriksson is thought to have held talks with Fulham but the Swede revealed last week that he was considering a lucrative offer to stay on as Ivory Coast head coach.

The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

MARTIN JOL will be unveiled as Fulham's new manager tomorrow.

The two clubs yesterday sorted out compensation and Jol has agreed terms of around £2million a year with Cottagers supremo Mohamed Fayed.

Dutchman Jol, who had three successful years at Tottenham, has also been promised substantial transfer funds.

The move has shocked Ajax, after Jol led the club to second place in the Eredivisie last season - just behind Steve McClaren's FC Twente.

But Jol has grown unhappy at the Amsterdam Arena, with the club considering selling two of their World Cup stars - Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Holland's Gregory van der Wiel.

Jol is likely to have been reassured of Fulham's ability to buy big following Fayed's sale of Harrods to the Qatari royal family for £1.5billion.

His arrival will be welcomed in West London, as Fulham start life without new Liverpool chief Hodgson. And there are plenty of familiar faces in their squad.

Danny Murphy, Simon Davies and Stephen Kelly all played under, and were sold by, Jol at Spurs.

Davies said: "Martin is a very, very good coach, one of the best I have worked with."

Cheers WN, this is undoubtedly very positive news, and I believe the appointment of Jol would highlight how far this club has progressed over the past few seasons.
