Manchester United lead the chase to sign £10m-rated Championship star

Manchester United are in pole position to sign Fulham wonderkid Patrick Roberts, according to Metro.
United are keeping tabs on Roberts

United are keeping tabs on Roberts

Roberts, 18, is regarded as one of the most promising players in the Sky Bet Championship and he is subsequently being courted by some of England's biggest clubs.

The publication claims that a deal will be around the £10 million mark, and if an offer of that size came in, it would be hard for the west London club to turn down.

It has been a truly abysmal season for Kit Symons' Fulham side, with the club currently sitting in 17th place in the Sky Bet Championship table.

The 18-year-old made his first-team debut for the Cottagers last season but has been limited to just a few starts this campaign.

The versatile midfielder has just one year left on his current deal at Craven Cottage, and he has made a total of 18 appearances for Fulham but has yet to score.

Fulham fans.... Would you be gutted to see Roberts leave? Would you be happy to get £10 million for him? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!

The Craven Corner: Why Kit Symons' team selection is not helping Fulham at all

I suppose you never know what you're going to witness as a Fulham fan this season. Especially when the teams were announced and for no reason, Dan Burn was dropped for Shaun Hutchinson.

Everyone has witnessed a stronger defence with Burn back in the eleven so Kit Symons' selection choice was questionable. Despite the win, the selection raised more question marks. We saw a return for Hugo Rodallega in place of Matt Smith.

The problem with that is that Ross McCormack and Smith were forming a strong partnership and looked like the starting pair for the future - considering Hugo is a high earner and looks likely to leave the club in the summer.

Maybe Kit wanted to give Bryan Ruiz and Hugo a good send off in the last home game, but I'm sure many fans would have wanted to see players who will most likely be at the club next season. Players like Patrick Roberts would have been great to see, and keeping Burn in the starting eleven would have been much more pleasing. No offence to Hutchinson, but I believe Burn is a much stronger player and his commanding presence helps the team keep its shape.

There have been so many changes this season and with the remaining games it would have been better if we could finally keep some consistency in the squad.

While, the win was incredibly satisfying and a great result for morale it shouldn't paper over the cracks of inconsistency and poor selection choices. It was another tremendous hat-trick for Ross McCormack and he will probably get the player of the year award with a strong end to the season.

He has contributed to over 50% of our goals this season and with the right recruitment in the summer, we should have a top half finish at least.

The loanees this season have also proved to be a success and if the opportunities to sign them on permanent deals arise, we should take them. Michael Turner started to form a strong partnership with Dan Burn prior to this game and James Husband has been sensational since arriving at the Cottage. While, Seko Fofana may not be sold by Manchester City another loan move would be beneficial to providing that energy in the centre of the park.

Another three points was great for everyone involved, but there is still room for improvement. Well done to all the fans by sticking with the club all season despite the issues and disappointments.

Fulham star Ross McCormack: We deserve bottom-half finish

Three reign: Ross McCormack with the match ball after his hat-trick helped Fulham beat Middlesbrough

Ross McCormack admits Fulham have got what they deserved from a dismal first season in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League.

The striker, an £11million summer signing from Leeds, also called for a number of new signings if the club are going to challenge for promotion next season.

Kit Symons' side only secured their Championship status last week after a torrid campaign in which they took just one point from their first eight games under former manager Felix Magath.

"I've enjoyed the season but it's been a bit of a roller-coaster," admitted the Scot, who took his tally for the campaign to 19 with a hat-trick in Saturday's stunning 4-3 win over promotion-chasing Middlesbrough. "The start of the season wasn't the best. Kit came in and had a honeymoon period when we picked up 27 points from 14 games.

"If you pro rata that over the course of the season it's promotion form but unfortunately we couldn't keep that up and this league definitely doesn't feel sorry for anyone. We are where we are because we deserve it."

But with Symons and owner Shahid Khan stating they will look to invest heavily in the summer McCormack feels Fulham have the basis of a side that can compete at the top of the Championship.

"The manager and the owner have said the recruitment needs to be right in the summer and I agree with that to give us the best possible chance.

"When we get it right with this squad, we can beat anyone in the league. We've done it against Derby and Middlesbrough at Craven Cottage but over the course of the season it's not been good enough, so over the summer there's certain things that have got to be addressed."

And McCormack admitted the victory over Middlesbrough summed up a season in which Fulham's tally of 79 goals conceded was the second highest in the Championship.

The 28-year-old added: "The spirit and fight was there against Middlesbrough but it's possibly the story of our season. We've scored quite a few goals and let more than a few in.

"That's not me passing the buck on to the defenders because it's throughout the team that it's not been good enough, so there are things that we need to address in the close season.

"The win doesn't paper over the cracks. A lot of things need to be looked at over the summer."

Under-21s Host United

Fulham Under-21s draw the curtain on this season's action at Craven Cottage as they take on Barclays U21 Premier League leaders Manchester United on Tuesday evening (7pm).

Peter Grant's side will be looking to get back to winning ways after two straight defeats in which they have failed to score. Last time out at the Cottage the Whites were beaten 2-0 by Sunderland in the league before being knocked out in the Semi-Final of the Premier League International Cup by Porto at Motspur Park.

United sit top of the pile as the season draws to the close and cannot afford to slip up, with a host of clubs waiting to pounce. The Red Devils are unbeaten since the sides last met back in February, where the Whites ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Tom Richards and Adam Taggart.

After lengthy spells out on the sidelines, United included the likes of Rafael, Jonny Evans, Adnan Januzaj and Robin van Persie in their side last time out. That game ended 1-1, but Rafael and Januzaj were both withdrawn from the action with injuries.

Season Ticket Holders get free entrance to Craven Cottage for the match, while all other supporters can attend at a price of just £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Fulham boss fearful club could end up like QPR if he overspends in transfer market

Whites boss admits he is restricted by Fair Play rules

Fulham manager Kit Symons

Fulham boss Kit Symons would love to spend the club's £40million parachute money in a bid to build a winning squad for next season.

However, the Whites boss admits he is hamstrung by Financial Fair Play rules, which in essence prohibits clubs forking out more than they earn.

In the last published accounts for 2013, Fulham made a £1m loss from a £73m turnover of which £67m was player wages.

Symons and Whites are fearful penalties that might hit QPR should the neighbours get relegated will be their lot too if they overspend, despite the deep pockets of billionaire owner Shahid Khan.

The Fulham manager said: "Financial fair play will play a part.

"There was money available in January, the chairman has been very supportive and I spoke to him last week, but we extensively used the loan market; and I'm glad we did that.

"Injuries and suspensions meant we were light. But I didn't want to spend money now that kept us up but didn't work out longer term.

"I looked at options and they weren't available; it was an educated gamble that paid off, but I predict a busy time in the summer.

"Because of financial fair play we'd have to work within a budget, and there will be quite a few comings and goings."

Ross McCormack's £11m acquisition last summer drew gasps and criticism aplenty, but Symons admits he is ready to spend the same again on one player if needs be.

He added: "I'm not ruling out spending that type of money, but it would have to be really good value for the football club."

Fulham round off their season at Norwich on Saturday with an outside chance of 16th place if they dent Canary hopes of returning to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Whites were only one point behind Norwich when both took the 2013-14 plunge, but a bad start with only one point from seven games this season did for any Fulham hope they would bounce back like the East Anglia club.

Championship Star???????????

Apparently research shows that only 40% of Youth Cup WINNERS in this age range go on to play for their clubs senior team and only 9% play more than 20 games.

There is no statistic for those that were not winners but I would guess it is smaller and therefore very few teenage stars ever make it.
It could be better but it's real life and not a fantasy

OK, we are all aware that a very few young players make it to the top but Roberts is, without doubt, the most natural and talented young player I have seen at Fulham since Haynes.
He just has to make it.

You lost any semblance of knowing what your talking about  with your comment that Burn's presence made us "stronger" at the back!
At that point I PML! and couldn't read anymore!
