I appreciate that there has been a thread on this subject but this is from a different angle.

Having been born in 1939, I can claim to have lived through the war, though my memories are sketchy, to say the least. I was 5 and 4 months on VE Day. I can remember the bells of St Paul's in the Broadway going hell for leather, I can remember a street party in Chancellors Street (close by The Chancellors Pub) and I can remember my Uncle Mont (he was a GI who married my Mums Sister) driving me and all the other kids in Jeep, around the Square in Peabody.

I was a boy of eleven at the end of the war and in Fulham, had experienced close bombing, doodle bugs and rocket attacks  and can now remember being grateful that the war had ended. It was a day to remember and celebrate.
