I've done a fair stint of backpacking and the journey makes the trip. In my travels the harder to get between places makes the best journey. It's people who rely on a service that end up worse off. Probably very true. Tourists generally have more time because they are on holiday. Locals go to work, home from work, to school, shopping, etc. I always admire tourists in Vienna strolling around while I am in a hurry...
