Happy Birthday Corked Hat, The Bard, John Henry Ellen

...it would have been my mate John's birthday today, a lovely guy who wrote some wonderful poems about Fulham players past and present, not sure what he would have made of this tribute 'wot I wrote' but for all it's faults, it's heartfelt:-

I 'met' him on a message board
I liked his style of prose
We agreed on so much
And never came to blows


Battersea born, and generous, not a meanie
Whose job took him to work down under
The devoted hubby to his beloved Jeannie
And no man would put asunder


I can see him now, Fulham scarf adorned
Proudly smiling at the Cottage
Surrounded by friends, all forewarned
His genius to acknowledge


Advertising was his profession
Often honoured by his peers
An author too, of some note
In his later years


We miss you loads now that you've gone
With Haynes, Leggat, Jezzard, Hill, in Heaven
Corked Hat, The Bard, the legend lives on

It saddened me to see Facebook ask me to send him birthday wishes this morning.  Perhaps I should have been more positive and taken a leaf out of Sir Les's book of poetry.
Old John was a lot of fun on both the old board and on this one.

I had the pleasure of meeting John on his last trip to the Cottage. He had the modesty that only true great people are blessed with. I will always treasure the time spent with John. Miss you, my friend.
