We've been blessed with some brilliant defenders over the decades. It's probably one of the strongest positions to choose from. Here's my two bobs worth. It's not just ability, achievement for our club too rather than for others.

1) Hangeland
2) Coleman
3) Eddie Lowe
4) Roy Bentley
5) Tony Gale
6) Simon Morgan
7) Roger Brown
8) Bobby Moore
9) Alain Goma
10) Aaron Hughes

Still some very good ones not included. But I'm happy with those 10. Bit harsh on Hughes but I thought Goma was a better player and everyone else seemed to be higher anyway.
Anyone missing? And is it in the right order? Over to you lot.

Delboy

John Dempsey and Paul Went were useful centre backs.

Supermitch

Surely there's room for Jim Hicks and Geoff Banton.  Well maybe not in the top 10......

Tonywa

Hicks and Banton would have a job getting in the top 50 ;-) ;-) ;-)

What about Bobby Keech! So long ago forgotten how to spell his name!

BestOfBrede

Reg Matthewson appears to be missing also

It's all well and good throwing names at it. But the 10 I listed are all very worthy players for the debate. So who would you replace? When you need to actually replace someone does it present a much harder challenge?

Its spelt  Moore . What about John Lacy .

Sorry guy, I didn't have time to study/reply and just thought of a favourite of mine from the past.
I wasn't attempting to be flippant and was not challenging your top 10

Don't be silly BoB. I was just talking in general. On both the keeper and fullback threads names were chucked into the mix. But rarely did anyone actually point out who they should replace.

Was Reg better than any of the 10 listed?

isn't it Keetch? And surely Johnny Dempsey has to be in there too.

Chutney

Melville > Goma in my opinion, Melville was huge for us in getting to the prem and in staying there. Goma was probably the better player mind, but Melville did captain us.

snarks

Melville is a very good shout. I'm sad to say I'd forgotten him, <hangs head in shame> I think he goes in at 8 or 9 and the rest move down and Hughes drops out.

Which is a shame but Hughes was a great foil for Hangerland, and I don't think had quite the same impact in his own right.

RaySmith

Bob Dodgin was the first centre-half I remember seeing for Fulham - he was a regular alongside Cohen and  Langley, with Macedo in goal.

Bronaldinho

Bit of a strange suggestion.

But Heitinga was actually a terrific player for us. So comfortable on the ball, and was a leader.

Sadly, he was part of one of the worst managed teams of all time.

Holders

I can't put them in order but my top 10 would be: Went, Coleman, Dempsey (J), Hangeland, Heitinga (good shout, Bronaldinho), Goma, Moore, Brown, Gale, Morgan (for sheer heart). I haven't listed any I didn't see play. Melville and Matthewson were ok but didn't inspire me.

Someone said Lacy!

Bobby Moore was in a class of his own , so i wont even include him

Think they have all been covered, pleased to see Roy Bentley in there, an english international centre forward who we converted to a great centre half.
Going way back , Jim Taylor who played a big part in our first ever promotion to the top flight.

Peabody

I too was going to mention Jim Taylor, an England international.

Not necessarily the best but Roy Bentley was very nearly capped by England as a centre halve after being converted to the half back line by, I think Duggie Livingstone
