If we're going to play a high line would it be worth trying a sweeper ?
even in place of a Parker/Tunnicliffe.
That way any balls over the top could be covered and because we are pushing up so far, the Parker/Tunnicliffe role would be covered by the cluttered midfielders

a sort of

1-1-4-3-2 or
1-1-5-2-2 with the 2 wing backs providing the pace and width
Anyone can blend into the crowd.  How will you standout when it counts?

I think keepers are expected to do that job these days

when keepers were no longer able to pick up a back pass, they became the new sweepers.

Sweeper was the last position I played.

I think the point of the high line is to compact the play and making closing down easier, playing a sweeper will give room in behind to stay onside, so would negate that effect to a degree.

Best player of that position in recent history was Jaap Stam. Still think that selling him, was one of the biggest mistakes Sir Alex ever did. Massive player.

SAF admitted that was a mistake, but at United he played in a back 4 and just covered in behind his partner when required. He was a top top player

Simple answer to a simple question - the off side rule.
One reason why centre back partnerships require at least one to be able to match or at least anticipate the pace of strikers / midfielders.
Of course we don't have any particularly quick strikers so less of a problem for our opponents unfortunately.

I like a sweeper in the team, or somebody that lies deep to be an extra man when the defence/midfield foul up.
The idea that the goalkeeper can do that job is wrong, they do an amount of clearing up overhit balls but in the end are not do what a sweeper should
Beginning to sound a bit like a tongue twister)

We may need a sweeper on the pitch when the snow settles.

sweepers have turned to dust...

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.  Now where is that vacuum?

I think the modern back four is played with one strong CB and fast pace CB.  The stronger one playing in front of the faster one who plays more of a sweeper role.  This allows teams to play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formations.

We used to have this under Roy and desperately need it again.
