Oh you silly men. There is only one, the Pearl of them all, Janis Joplin.
Its not that I could and others couldn't.
Its that I did and others didn't.

sorry,

there are two that stand out head and shoulders above the rest
1st place aretha, it isn't even worth a debate
2nd place is etta james...catch her rendition of the james brown classic 'this is a man's world'

i am sure the other suggestions here are akll good singers, and dionne surely is a sparkling ray of light but the two i mention dazzle in ways the others just do not.

@MattRhys63 - be warned, there will be a lot of nonsense

Mince n Tatties

Check out on you tube Donna Summer singing
Macarthur Park live at Last Night of the Proms.
Incredible live performance..IMO.

Also worth a mention - Amy Lee, who fronted Evanescence and Sharon den Adel who is lead singer with Within Temptation.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Gotta give props to Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes; give it a listen if blues/southern rock is your kind of thing.

Unless you mean a "pure singer." I'm waiting for the moment that Rae Morris explodes as an artist. Laura Marling another modern female that's just excellent.

I think it's near impossible to have this conversation without including Adele nor Amy Winehouse.

Stevie Nicks?

I think most lists would have Aretha Franklin in the top five at the very list.

I have actually got a  Karen Mathieson solo cd - she is a great singer.

Love most of the women mentioned here, but JanisJoplin is a particular favourite, and  someone  who I've been listening to a lot recently, the late Sandy Denny, who never achieved the success she deserved, but  was one of the first, and greatest, female singer/songwriters.
