Was just watching the Leverkusen v Ingolstadt match this morning (I'm in The States).

There was a long ball over the top to an Ingolstadt forward who was marked very tightly by the last Leverkusen defender.

The forward won the ball and was in on goal. Well, the last defender attempted a rugby/American football style tackle by putting his hands on the forward's waist, trying to bring him down. The forward escaped w the ball. The ref made the advantage call. And the forward scored.

Now, shouldn't the ref have given a red in that instance for the attempt to deny a clear goal scoring opportunity??? In truth, no card was given.

No - by playing the advantage the ref was effectively saying he hadn't denied a goalscoring opportunity.  Had he blown for the foul then yes certain red.  Think he should however, when the ball went dead i.e. the goal, have booked the defender.

All down to interpretation by the ref and that's a genuine use of the laws of the game.

While its possible to go back and book a player after the ball goes dead its also possible to play on and decide not to card if the play results in a positive outcome for the attacker eg a goal.

That's the beauty of Football.

Because the player scored it cannot be denying a player a scoring opportunity, the ref was right but he could have given a yellow card  for the foul.

Yes agree, would have been red if the ref blew but he played on and they scored, should have been a yellow though.

Think that also happened in a champions league final a few years back, memory recalls one Arsenal were in?

Thanks. Not sure I'd seen such an obvious attempt to foul to stop a goal that ended up NOT preventing a goal before. Definitely shld have been a yellow.

Surely if the tackle had been dangerous and, in spite of scoring, the forward had suffered an injury the referee would have booked the offender.

Giving someone a hug is only dangerous if the wife finds out.

The ref can't go back and give a red card after playing the advantage.
