Liverpool player Joel Matip has been talking about the manager that had the biggest influence on his career, and many may be surprised to know that it's former Fulham manager Felix Magath. The German is more known in this country for his interesting spell in West London where he encouraged players to use cheese to cure injuries, among other things.

Matip said: "Pre-season at Liverpool was hard – tougher than last season at Schalke – but nothing compared to Magath. There was no tougher training than under Magath. Every coach I had after this I would think 'no problem'."

I wouldn't say this player was exactly a fan. Magath's influence on him might have been memorable, but not necessarily good!

Willy Sagnol (former France and Munich RB) was on Sky's 'fantasy football club' picking him best 11 yesterday and he was asked about I quote "the man we all perceive as mad" Magath.

Sagnol was a fan of him!! "He made a lot of players physically sick with his training but was hard and a fair coach"
