Scott Malone signs for Huddersfield from Fulham as defender becomes sixth addition this week for Premier League new boys

Scott Malone impressed for Fulham last season, making the team of the year
He joins Premier League new boys Huddersfield on a three-year deal
Terriers boss David Wagner believes Malone is an assured 'physical presence'
26-year-old is ninth addition in transfer window and fifth since Tuesday

Newly-promoted Huddersfield have signed their sixth player in the current transfer window with defender Scott Malone joining the Premier League side.

Malone makes the switch from Fulham on a three-year deal, the West Yorkshire club announced.

The 26-year-old left-back played in 42 matches last season in his first and only season with the Cottagers.

Scott Malone became the latest addition to newly-promoted Huddersfield's ranks

His impressive performances earned him a spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

Fulham finished sixth in the league and reached the play-off semi-finals, where they lost to Reading.

'Scott is a good physical presence and is a very capable defender, plus he adds a lot going forward,' Huddersfield manager David Wagner told the club website.

Malone was pictured wearing Huddersfield's new kit for the season ahead

'He shows good football intelligence to time his forward runs and can set up goals for team-mates and scoring them himself.'

Malone is the club's fifth recruit since Tuesday after the signings of forward Steve Mounie and midfielders Tom Ince, Danny Williams and Kasey Palmer.

Transfer Talk: Fulham join Crystal Palace and Birmingham City in race for Bastia defender Alexander Djiku

The 22-year-old defender has been attracting interest from across Europe this summer, with the likes of Bursaspor, Olympiakos, St Etienne and Caen said to be interested in signing the Bastia player.

Fulham are reportedly competing with Crystal Palace and Birmingham City in the race to sign French defender Alexander Djiku.

The 22-year-old defender has been attracting interest from across Europe this summer, with the likes of Bursaspor, Olympiakos, St Etienne and Caen said to be interested in signing the Bastia player.

But French publication L'Equipe is reporting that Palace are one of three English clubs also keen on the defender, with the report suggesting that Bastia are considering a quick sale to raise money.

It is understood that Bastia would want a fee in the region of €2-3m for the player and Palace are reportedly hopeful that the lure of Premier League football could be a factor for Djiku.

Fulham v Norwich: How would last year's top scorers get on if they faced each other tomorrow?

In what promises to be one of the most entertaining match ups of the opening weekend of the 2017/18 season, Fulham entertain Norwich City at Craven Cottage in what promises to be a goal fest in west London.

Joint top league scorers with 85 goals apiece last season, these two sides will continue to build upon their prolific output in the opening weeks of the new campaign.

It has been a relatively quiet summer in Fulham thus far, with Serbian boss Slavisa Jokanovic adding just the single new face to his squad, Lugo defender Marcelo Djalo.

The 23-year-old has spent periods of his career with European giants Real Madrid and Juventus, and Jokanovic will hope the defender will add a new air of quality to his stability to his back line.

Fulham's best business this summer however has not been in bringing new faces to the club, but retaining old ones.

Influential players Tom Cairney and Ryan Sessegnon have committed their futures to the club having been linked with big money moves to the Premier League, and holding onto his prized assets is a coup in its own right for Jokanovic.

Things have been a little more crazy at Norwich, with new boss Daniel Farke welcomed to the club, and the German boss bringing Mario Vrancic and Christoph Zimmermann to East Anglia from Germany.

Impressive Barnsley winger Marley Watkins has also joined, as well as young goalkeeper Angus Gunn on a loan deal from Man City.

Slow starts to the summer by both clubs are sure to be dispelled in the weeks leading up to the opening weekend, and the squads may well look very different in a month's time.

At this current stage of the summer however, Fulham's retainment of the majority of the side that impressed so greatly last season is a real bonus for the club, and home advantage would make them favourites with the squads currently on the books at the two clubs.

'Why Tomas Kalas may be the perfect answer to Middlesbrough's right-back dilemma - again'

After missing out on Chris Gunter, Boro are searching for alternatives at right-back. Well look no further, writes Jonathan Taylor

The last time I spoke to Tomas Kalas was in May 2016 - just moments after Middlesbrough had clinched promotion back to the Premier League.

Dimi Konstantopoulos went up for the ball - and claimed it. The Riverside erupted. Fans from different generations had tears in their eyes, united in the club's moment of triumph.

What followed was unforgettable, a constant stream of supporters - in their thousands - hailing their heroes on the Riverside pitch. It was an outpouring of emotion, a joyous afternoon, and the celebrations carried on long into the summer.

Amid all the celebrations, I remember speaking to Kalas. He's wasn't a Teessider, not a fan, not even a full-time Boro player - yet there were tears in his eyes.

Promotion was the culmination of a 16-month spell at Boro which helped Kalas resurrect his career. The people of Teesside took him under their wing.

Here, he found a sense of belonging. The pain of Cologne eased. He rediscovered his love of the game at Boro.

Just outside the Riverside tunnel, as the celebrations continued, I chatted to Kalas about promotion, his second season at Boro and the future.

George Friend and Tomas Kalas

And it was instantly clear that he wanted to stay at Boro. He had Premier League ambitions - and wanted to achieve them on Teesside.

"I don't know how many games I've played since I came, probably around 40, which is not bad in one and a half years," Kalas said.

"That's why I came here, to play games, and hopefully I'll keep playing next season - maybe here.

"If I could get the deal (to move to Boro permanently) I would really think about it. Yes, why not!"

Kalas wanted to stay, but the offer never came. Aitor Karanka later suggested the Czech Republic international was an option - but not top of the list. Instead, he wanted to assess other openings in the market first.

In the end, Boro recruited Antonio Barragan and Fabio to compete with incumbent Emilio Nsue for the right-back slot, and Kalas - keen to finalise his next move before pre-season began - headed to Fulham.

Fast forward 12 months, Barragan is heading for Real Betis and Nsue was sold to Birmingham back in January.

Right-back has proven a problem position for Boro over the years. Since November 2013 - when Karanka took charge - the club have played 17 different players in that position.

Not believe me? Frazer Richardson, Rhys Williams, Kenneth Omeruo, Seb Hines, Damia Abella, Ryan Fredericks, Milos Velkjovic, Kalas, Dwight Tiendalli, Dean Whitehead, Alex Baptiste, Nsue, Ritchie de Laet, Barragan, Calum Chambers and Fabio.

What number will that rise to in the next 12 months? Right-back remains an area where new boss Garry Monk is keen to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Missing out on Reading's stand-in skipper Chris Gunter was a blow earlier in the week. A seasoned international who was a virtual ever-present for the Royals last season, he would have slotted seamlessly into the Boro set-up.

And he would have been another leader to add to the likes of Grant Leadbitter, George Friend, Ben Gibson and Adam Clayton.

Alas, the 27-year-old has penned a new contract at the Mad-Stad and Boro are now looking at alternatives. Derby's Cyrus Christie has been monitored for some time, and the list of options does not end there.

Which brings me to Kalas - part of the exciting Fulham side who blasted their way into the play-off mix following a late season surge at the end of last season.

He ticks every box. Knows the club? Tick. A proven Championship performer? Tick. Potential to become a Premier League regular, should Boro go back up? Tick.

Available? Tick.

It's no surprise that Kalas has plenty of admirers this summer. Fulham are desperate to take the versatile Chelsea man back to Craven Cottage, while Hull City boss Leonid Slutsky has compatriot Roman Abramovich on speed dial.

As things stand, it's Hull who seem to be leading the chase for his signature.

Could Boro do worse than re-signing Kalas? Absolutely - there's nothing to suggest the club have or haven't enquired about the possibility of bringing the player back to the North-east.

But it would certainly be a wrench to see him move elsewhere - especially to a top-six rival.

When I think of Kalas' time at Boro, one thing springs to mind. No, not that away day at Bournemouth. I've tried to banish that from memory.

But it was the away win at Norwich in April 2015, when Boro scored early and then put in one of the most dogged, determined defensive performances in recent memory.

A 'Karanka away day masterclass' was what it was billed, and at the time - in the context of the season - it seemed like a massive moment.

That was Kalas' parting gift, his final game in the 2014/15 season due to the terms of his loan deal. He missed Wembley and the heartache that followed.

How Boro would have loved to have him available in the play-off final.

Like everyone on Teesside, Kalas came back stronger - and was part of the Boro squad that went one better 12 months later.

He celebrated on the pitch after the final day draw with Brighton like a fan.

If Boro are looking for a new right-back this summer, an alternative after missing out on Gunter, the answer may be staring us in the face.

We'll hopefully see you soon, Tommy.

Malone signs for Huddersfield
by Dan on July 5, 2017

Huddersfield's summer spending spree continued as they concluded a deal to sign Fulham full back Scott Malone – which could rise to as much as £5m – this evening.

Malone, who enjoyed an outstanding single season at Craven Cottage as Slavisa Jokanovic's side reached the Championship play-off semi-finals, has signed a three-year contract with the Premier League newcomers as the Terriers pre-season splurge surged over the £40m mark. The left back, who joined Fulham last summer from Cardiff City in a swap deal with Jazz Richards, was named in the EFL and PFA's Championship sides of the season after scoring six goals in 41 appearances.

The 26 year-old has jumped at the chance of tasting top flight football for the first time in his career and becomes Huddersfield's fifth signing in the past two days. Malone's departure might offer more first team football for Fulham's promising 17 year-old Ryan Sessegnon, who recently turned down a number of big clubs to sign his first professional contract with the west London club.

Cisse close to completing Fulham move?
by Dan on July 6, 2017

Reports from Belgium suggest that Fulham could finally conclude a deal to sign the Standard Liege midfielder Ibrahima Cisse today.

The 23 year-old, who was the subject of a number of Fulham bids during the January transfer window, has reportedly travelled to London this morning to finalise the details of a permanent move to England. Cisse, who can also play at right back, would join compatriot Denis Odoi at Craven Cottage should he complete the permanent transfer that has been widely trailed in the Belgian media today. The Whites appear to have seen off serious interest from Italian top flight side Palermo, who were hoping to add Cisse to their squad this week.

The former Belgium under-21 international, who starred in Standard's Europa League campaign last season, would be another recruit from that neck of the woods for Fulham, who have successfully brought in both Odoi and winger Neeksens Kebano from Belgian football over the past year. Cisse has made 52 appearances for Liege, having impressed previously with KV Mechelen in domestic football, and would provide tough-tackling cover for the likes of Kevin McDonald at the base of the Fulham midfield following the retirement of Scott Parker.

Transfer talk: Fulham full-back Ryan Fredericks linked with Watford switch

LINKED: Ryan Fredericks is supposedly on Watford's radar

Fulham's Ryan Fredericks is the latest in a long-line of full-backs to be linked with Watford this summer.

The 24-year-old played 27 times for the Cottagers in the Championship last season, including starting both of legs of their play-off semi final defeat to Reading.

He's been at Craven Cottage for two seasons now, after coming through the academy at Tottenham Hotspur. Fredericks never played for Spurs, though, and spent much of his time out on loan.

Watford's desire to strengthen their options defensively on both flanks is no secret, but Fredericks is a right-sided player, first and foremost, and the Hornets have already secured the signature of Kiko Femenia to provide Daryl Janmaat with competition.

He can play on the left-side, too, where the Hornets do still need to strengthen, but it would be an odd move.

Prior to their play-off semi-final defeat, Fredericks had spoken of the need to go up to make sure that Fulham kept their best players, saying: "It is very important that we go up, because then we have a better chance of keeping our best players."

He was referring to Tom Cairney and Ryan Sessegnon, then, but if the rumours are to be believed, Fredericks could be the man on the move.

Report: Fulham could sign Bastia's Alexander Djiku for knock-down price

Fulham are battling Birmingham City and Crystal Palace for Alexander Djiku, relegated from Ligue 1 with Bastia last season.

It certainly wasn't a lack of firepower that put pay to Fulham's hopes of Premier League football last season. Scoring 85 times in the Championship, they were the joint most prolific side in the second tier along with Norwich City and title winners Newcastle United.

Therefore, it makes sense for manager Slavisa Jokanovic to fortify a defence which conceded 17 more goals than the top two, Newcastle and Brighton, in 2016/17 – especially with last season's loanee Tomas Kalas heading back to parent club Chelsea.

Fulham have already completed the signing of Lugo defender Marcelo Djalo and they now look set to follow that up with Alexander Djiku.

According to L'Equipe (page 18, 6th July), Corsican side Bastia, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, are in a dire financial situation and therefore need to sell their prized assets.

And Djiku, a 22-year-old centre-back who started 20 games in France's top flight last season, falls into that category. L'Equipe claim that the defender, who has spent his entire career at Bastia, could be available for a knockdown fee of around £2.6 million.

The report adds that he could be sold within the next few days.

Fulham have competition, however. The report adds that Birmingham City, who recently reinforced their defence with the addition of Barnsley captain Marc Roberts, are interested in further reinforcements.

Crystal Palace are also linked as new manager Frank de Boer intends to fix an unhelpful penchant for conceding sloppy goals. The Eagles hopes of signing Sevilla's France international Adil Rami now look distinctly unlikely with L'Equipe claiming he has chosen Marseille instead of Selhurst Park.

Which means Fulham face a fight landing Djiku.

Transfer talk: Fulham offered hope in chase for Bordeaux striker Diego Rolan

Could Bordeaux frontman soon be making the move away from France?

Fulham have been in the market for much of the summer.

With Chris Martin returning to Derby County following the end of a loan spell and Cyriac Gohi going back to Oostende, Slavisa Jokanovic is short of options up front.

The manager has moved to fix that problem by making bids for three strikers - that we know of - in the form of Diego Rolan, Rui Fonte and Steve Mounie.

Mounie decided to move to Premier League newboys Huddersfield Town instead, but there has been no further movement on the Rolan and Fonte fronts.

But could there be a chink of hope for Fulham in the chase for Bordeaux forward Rolan?

Get West London understands that the Cottagers are the only team to have made a formal approach for the forward and we are now hearing that Bordeaux have gone into the market to find a replacement as they expect Rolan to move on.

Birmingham City and Fulham face competition from Crystal Palace to sign Ligue 2 defender

Birmingham City and Fulham will face competition from Crystal Palace in their battle to sign Bastia's Alexander Djiku according to a report from the July 6th print edition of French publication L'Equipe.

The 22-year-old defender is coming off the back of a season where he played well, even if his team Bastia didn't. Despite the efforts put in by Djiku, Bastia were relegated from Ligue 1 after finishing at the very bottom of the division. And with the defender being seen as a player that is too good to compete in Ligue 2, several teams have become interested in him.

Firstly the interest came from within the country with teams such as Caen and St Etienne and expressing a willingness to sign him before Turkish side Bursaspor and Greek giant Olympiakos also looked into signing him. However Djiku could now head across the English Channel after teams from our country started to become interested in signing him.

Both Birmingham City and Fulham are looking to challenge for promotion this season, with the Blues investing heavily to ensure that while the Cottagers just need some improvement after losing out in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs last time around. And with players costing far less in France, both teams have started to look at Djiku and could make a move for him in the next few days. However they will face stiff competition as Premier League Crystal Palace are also set to enter the race and will use their league status to move to the head of the pack.

Kebano keen to take on penalty responsibility
by Dan on July 6, 2017

Neeskens Kebano was delighted to start Fulham's pre-season preparations with his first goal and hinted that he should become the club's regular penalty taker after his spot-kick carried the Whites past Piast Gliwice.

Speaking to FulhamFCTV after the friendly victory in Poland, the Congolese winger expanded on the importance of some strenuous summer training to give the players the stamina and endurance to prepare for a draining Championship season.

It was important to win this friendly game. It is important to get everybody ready for the forthcoming season, we are working hard here in Poland and we are training to be in the best shape for the upcoming important games. It has been hard work – that is not the best part for us, but it is vital to go through the pre-season to be in better shape.

Kebano, operating on the left of a fluid Fulham front three, confidently tucked away a first-half spot-kick won by George Williams and staked a claim to be Slavisa Jokanovic's main man from twelve yards after last season's penalty hoodoo.

It was a penalty. That's the first penalty that I take here in Fulham – I scored, so we will see in the future for the next penalties!

The popular winger insisted that a youthful Fulham side acquitted themselves well against physical Polish opponents and admitted he needed to do very little to prepare the likes of Matt O'Riley, Steven Sessegnon and Jon Dagur Thorteinssen for their first taste of senior football.

It was just some little words [before the game] and some help on the pitch and that's it. I think they are big enough to know what role they have to play on the field.

Kebano confirmed that the disappointment of losing out to Reading in last season's play-off semi-final is now firmly behind the squad and they are ready to try and push for promotion once again from the Championship this season.

All the things that happened last season – everything's over. We have to refresh our mindset and be all ready for the future. We don't know how it is going to be but we are ready to face it.

He emphasised the strong bond between the squad that Jokanovic has assembled and also expressed both surprise and admiration for the group of Fulham fans who had travelled over to Poland to watch the first game of Fulham's summer tour.

It is just like a family and we are all glad to be back together. I think you filmed when we came for the first appointment of the season and it was, like 'I miss you, I miss you too'. It showed that we are just like a family and very good friends. I was surprised [by the number of fans travelling over]. I didn't know that they were coming here. It shows how much they love us and each time we are in the field, we just have to give them back.

Bristol City target Marcus Bettinelli sparks transfer speculation after not training with Fulham

The Cottagers' goalkeeper looks to be on the verge of moving club

Fulham goalkeeper - and Bristol City transfer target - Marcus Bettinelli is not training as the Cottagers hold a pre-season camp in Poland.

The 25-year-old has not been announced as being injured and is instead believed to be on the verge of a switch elsewhere with several Championship clubs interested in the goalkeeper's services.

The Bristol Post understands that the former England U21 player is a target for Bristol City and that there is strong interest in the goalkeeper.

Indeed, Chelsea were believed to have been considering bringing in the keeper, who finished the season strongly minding Fulham's net, as their new no.2 behind Thibaut Courtois.

Instead, the Blues have snapped up Willy Caballero and Bettinelli has remained of interest to other Championship clubs, such as Bristol City, who scouted the player towards the end of the season.

Bettinelli is highly regarded at Craven Cottage but he admitted earlier this season that he might have to move on in search of regular first team football.

Now Get West London believes he is not part of the squad who are carrying out their pre-season training with Fulham in Poland.

Marcus Bettinelli (Image: Alex Pantling/Getty Images)

Bristol City are looking for a new goalkeeper after the return of Fabian Giefer to Schalke last season.

However, Lee Johnson has also stressed that there is the possibility of a younger player pushing their way into his first-team plans.

Frank Fielding ended the season in fine form last term for the Robins and will likely share the goalkeeping duties with Ivan Lucic and Jojo Wollacott in City's first pre-season friendlies at the weekend.

A strong squad is being sent to play Guernsey on Saturday before they then return to Bristol for the annual community game on Sunday against Bristol Manor Farm.

Stearman Departs

The Club can confirm that Richard Stearman has joined Sheffield United on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back signed for Fulham on deadline day of the 2015 transfer window from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and made 30 appearances in his debut campaign.

After a couple of run-outs in 2016/17, he returned to Wolves on loan for the remainder of the season.

Everyone at Fulham would like to thank Richard for his contributions during his time at the Club, and wish him all the best at Bramall Lane.

Stearman signs

The Blades have paid a substantial undisclosed fee to secure the services of an experienced Championship defender, who also has played in the Premier League.

Previously of Fulham, Richard Stearman has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at Bramall Lane to become Chris Wilder's fifth summer signing.

The 29-year-old, who spent last season on-loan at hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, has also represented Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

Stearman brings a wealth of second tier experience to South Yorkshire, playing over 250 times in the Championship, whilst he earned several England caps at junior level right through to the U21s earlier in his career.

Of the arrival of the centre-half, who can also operate at right-back, boss Wilder remarked: "Richard was our number one target throughout the summer and I'm delighted he has signed. We've been on the look out for a central defender who has played extensively in the Championship and who possesses the qualities and characteristics to fit in with our group.

"Richard will undoubtedly strengthen us, he's a calm influence in the dressing room and every manager who I have spoken to about him says he has outstanding leadership qualities and will offer 100 per cent commitment, on and off the pitch.

"He had other opportunities to pursue, but I am delighted we have managed to tempt him to Bramall Lane."

Stearman joins Ched Evans, Nathan Thomas, Enda Stevens and George Baldock as the new arrivals at Bramall Lane this summer.

Stearman signs for Sheffield United
by Dan on July 6, 2017

Championship newcomers Sheffield United have completed the signing of Fulham centre back Richard Stearman this afternoon on a three-year deal. The fee, officially undisclosed, is believed to be more than £1m.

The 29 year-old's transfer ends a difficult couple of years at Craven Cottage where the former Leicester City and Wolves defender never quite fulfilled brief of a dominant and physical centre back who was tasked with shoring up a rickety Fulham defence. Stearman arrived on transfer deadline in August 2015 and, despite making 30 league appearances in his first season with the club, failed to stem the alarming flow of goals conceded as the Whites drifted towards the drop zone.

The likeable centre back returned to Wolves, where he had played more than 200 times, on loan last season, scoring in their famous FA Cup giantkilling of Liverpool at Anfield, but was not able to secure a permanent deal with his old club and, having been kept out of the Fulham side by the likes of Tomas Kalas, Tim Ream and Michael Madl, was unlikely to force his way back into Slavisa Jokanovic's thinking as the Serbian head coach was looking at further defensive reinforcements.

The former England youth international becomes the Blades' fifth pre-season signing and is the latest big money earner to be moved on at Fulham as the Londoners look to reshape their squad for the second summer in succession.
