Former Fulham forward Sone Aluko reveals one of the main reasons he left Craven Cottage for Reading

The 28-year-old made a £7.5million move to Reading and he has revealed one of the main reason he chose the Madejski Stadium as his next stop in his career

Sone Aluko has revealed Reading manager Jaap Stam was one of the key factors in him leaving Fulham for the Madejski at the end of the transfer window.

The Cottagers, who signed Aluko on a free transfer from Hull the season before, got a reported £7.5m for the forward who made 54 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Despite Slavisa Jokanovic not wanting to lose the 28-year-old, Aluko made the move a couple of days before the window closed and he has now revealed that the Dutch manager was one of the main reasons he chose to join Reading, stating that their style of play will suit him.

Speaking to Reading's official club website, he said: "He's got a good shape about them, likes to play a good brand of football which I've learned this week and I've been enjoying it.

"It's one of the reasons I came here, because of the manager. After speaking to him and how he wants to set up, I think it will suit my style.

"Sometimes you just want to get in and get playing, but it's been good for me to learn how the other boys play, letting them know how I play.

"It has been a lot to take in but it's been good."

Portrait Of An Icon

Fulham is happy to endorse the release of a new book supporting a charity founded by former player and manager Sir Bobby Robson.

Written by Daniel Storey, Portrait of an Icon features 58 of the greatest names from football's recent history, each profiled in their own short chapter. Icons include George Best, Bobby Moore, Johan Cruyff and Arrigo Sacchi. The foreword has been written by Jamie Carragher.

The book is being published in conjunction with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation in their aim to find new ways to treat and beat cancer. All proceeds from the book go to the Foundation.

The Foundation was set up by former England manager Sir Bobby Robson in 2008 after he was diagnosed with cancer for the fifth and final time, and relies completely on third party, volunteer fund-raisers and the incredible generosity of the general public.

Lady Elsie, Bobby's three sons Paul, Andrew and Mark, trustees, the football community and committed Patrons including Alan Shearer, Niall Quinn, Steve Gibson, Delia Smith and Mick Mills help to continue his wishes today.

"Having started the Portrait of an Icon series for work, I soon wrote the portrait of Bobby Robson," Storey says.

"In that portrait I mentioned my grandfather, Jack, who was my last direct familial connection to the north east. Jack loved Bobby Robson, using him as the exemplar of decency that he felt had been lost in modern football, with all its bells and whistles. Sadly in June 2015, four months before the piece went out, Jack passed away.

"Something about losing a direct connection to the north east and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation clicked after that Sir Bobby portrait was published, and pretty much from that point I decided that I wanted it to become a book.

"It was never my intention to make any money out of the project, but instead create a great product at as low a cost as possible in order to make the Foundation as much money as possible."

The book is published through Ockley Books and can be bought from portraitofanicon.co.uk for a price of £13.99 (plus P&P), with £10 from every copy going directly to the Foundation.

U18s Travel to Reading
Fulham continue their unbeaten season with a trip to Reading this Saturday for an 11am kick off in the Premier League South.

So far this season, the Young Whites beat Arsenal at Motspur and a week later drew to Swansea City away.

In their last match Fulham beat Southampton clinically in a 2-0 victory, with Chris Kelly scoring from the wing and Nicolas Santos-Clase from the penalty spot in the last quarter of an hour of the match.

Fulham sit 4th in the Premier League South table, with the only three teams above them having won all three of their matches.

Reading have had different fortunes to the start of the season, and are pointless so far sitting 10th in the table.

Two of the teams to have beaten the Royals however, are Chelsea and Leicester, who have both picked up maximum points and top the table in first and second place respectively.

In Reading's other match of the season, they lost to Swansea 2-0. The Young Whites have also played the Swans, having drawn away as Cameron Thompson was needed to score a last gasp goal to bring a point back from South Wales.

Score updates will be provided from the Clubs twitter account @FulhamFC.

Omogbehin: Great Mentality

The Young Whites face Reading away on Saturday morning. Fulham have played three, winning two and drawing one.

"So far this season the boys have shown a great mentality on and off the field," commented Under-18s Head Coach, Colin Omogbehin.

"Everyday they come in ready to work showing good quality and great enthusiasm, so I've been very happy."

Last week Fulham beat Southampton 2-0, scoring both within the last quarter of an hour.

"Southampton were a very well organised team. They dropped off deep and tried to play on the counter," he said.

"When you play against a team that drop deep, it's very difficult to break them down because they're very compact, very narrow. So we had to be patient, wait for the moments to get in behind.

"Having said that, we did create a lot of chances, for whatever reason they just weren't going in.

"The boys did well to keep their composure and were patient, in the end they scored two and could have scored more, they got the result they deserved."

This weekend the Young Whites face a tough trip to Hogwood Park to face the Royals.

"Reading are a strong team, always physical," he explained. "They dominate set pieces and they are good at it, they're competitive.

"It certainly will be a hard game, as every Under-18s matches are now. It can be on a knife-edge, you can be in the game and then in the flash of a moment you can lose a goal.

"Reading in the past have always been a team that are very competitive and again will be difficult to break down.

"However, I believe that the way the boys are playing at the moment, they are going into every game full of confidence and always giving themselves every opportunity of being successful.

"The international break wasn't too disruptive for us, even though we do have internationals like Sonny Hilton and Zico Azare we got them back early. We had an opportunity to get some work done and work with the players for this upcoming match."

Six decades of Cardiff City v Fulham matches.

Back to City games, so the normal pre match quiz returns – the answers will be posted on here tomorrow.

60s. Who is the player in the foreground of this picture?

70s. What's the connection between the building in the photograph below, the place where the Beatles began their first British tour in 1963 and a Fulham player who made more than one hundred and fifty appearances for the club during this decade?

80s. Cambridge United away, Swansea away and Fulham away. What linked these games, spread over a couple of mid 80s seasons, as far as a City defender from this period, who we signed from Shepshed Charterhouse,  was concerned?

90s. Craven Cottage to the Copacabana is some trek, but why may it not have felt quite so far at a couple of Fulham v Cardiff matches in this decade?

00s. Which one time Fulham record signing had a month's trial at Ipswich in 2007, some six years after a transfer deal that saw the club Chairman take court action against the then manager alleging that he had taken a cut of the "exorbitant" fee himself – the charges were quickly dropped.

10s. Four years ago this month, City played their first league game against Fulham in more than sixteen years. How many players from either squad that afternoon are still at the same club and how many of them have subsequently played for the other team?

Answers

60s. Johnny Haynes.

70s. Slough – the building featured as the home of a Slough based fictional company called Wernham Hogg that the BBC comedy series The Office was centred on, the town was the opening venue for the Beatles on their first British tour and midfield player Alan Slough was a regular in the Fulham team for four years in the mid 70s.

80s. Colin Smith scored three league goals for City, they came in a 2-0 win at Cambridge on 10/3/84 and 3-2 defeats at Swansea and Fulham on 21/4/84 and 20/10/84 respectively.

90s. Because both teams had a Brazil in their team, Gary for Fulham and Derek for City, in our 3-1 win in Putney on 21/8/93 and then in our 1-0 home victory later in the season on 11/12/93.

00s. Steve Marlet – Mohammed Al Fayed wanted to take Jean Tigana to court.

10s. Aron Gunnarsson is the only player still at the side he played for on 28/9/13 – Keiran Richardson and Neil Etheridge have played for City since that day.

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock believes it's only a matter of time before Fulham get promoted

Fulham face Cardiff tomorrow at Craven Cottage and Warnock is of the belief that the Cottagers were the best side they played against last season

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock reckons it's only a matter of time before Fulham get promoted back to the Premier League as they prepare to face one another on Saturday.

The Bluebirds come to the Cottage sitting top of the division having not lost a single game yet, leading to Warnock winning Manager of the Month for August.

Fulham drew 2-2 home and away with Cardiff last season in a season where they reached the Play-off semi final where they lost to Reading, something Warnock reckons would've been hard to take as they were the best team and they would've known that.

He's expecting a challenge against Fulham tomorrow and expects them to have most of the ball, saying: "Tomorrow's going to be a real good challenge. I think they were the best team we played last year, in the play-offs, I thought if they got past Reading they'd have gone up.

"I think it's soon (that they go up). I have lost in the playoffs once. It's a horrible feeling and it's very difficult to get the lads up, no matter what you say.

"They must have known they were the best team so it's a double low to them. They've got so many good players, they'll have a lot of the ball."

Cardiff City aim to continue winning form

It has been a perfect start for Neil Warnock's men as Cardiff City sit top of the Championship. They have amounted five wins from five games this season, citing a 100% record so far. But the question is, how long until Cardiff start dropping points?

After finishing 12th last season, Bluebird fans were aware that some things needed improving for the current season. Players left the club and players were signed. Just the usual business as it is every year. Cardiff spent around £6m in transfer fees while sales summed up to just over £1m.

One player brought in that has been a stand-out performer is Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. Signing from Rochdale on a free, the winger has managed to bag four goals so far. He didn't even cost the club a penny as he signed on a free transfer. Up to now, he has already proved a bargain buy, scoring crucial goals in victories for the Welsh side.

Scoring a total of ten goals so far, Cardiff City have one of the best-attacking lineups in the Championship. They also possess one of the greatest defences as they have managed to only leak two goals.

Their wins this season have been against Burton Albion, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Queens Park Rangers. Some of those clubs were considered to be pretty tough as well. It just goes to show how organized Neil Warnock has his team this campaign.

Both away games have been won by just one goal margins, so it hasn't been as dominant as it sounds when we mention that Cardiff have five wins from five. So what can we expect from their next opponents, Fulham?

In the early stages of this campaign, Fulham have six points. They drew their opening three games then lost to Sheffield Wednesday at home, but followed with an away win against Ipswich. The Cottagers have only scored four goals but have also only conceded three. Considering Fulham have only managed one point from six at home this campaign, it's a great sign for any Cardiff City supporter.

Neil Warnock will likely stick to his 4-2-3-1 formation – it's obviously been working. It is a formation that suits not only his style but also the squad at his disposal. Despite the way things have been going lately, Warnock will be cautious about heading into their next game. It won't be an easy match as Fulham's back line are just as strong as Cardiff's.

With three points more than second-placed Ipswich and a five better goal difference, even if Cardiff lose this weekend they will still likely be top. But they will not want anything other than the win. Cardiff have some great talents in their squad this year and it will be interesting to see how they play at Craven Cottage this weekend.

Fulham add Yohan Mollo and Jordan Graham to squad for Cardiff clash

Fulham can add Yohan Mollo and Jordan Graham to their squad for the visit of Cardiff.

Mollo was a deadline-day signing from Zenit St Petersburg and fellow wideman Graham arrived from Wolves on a season-long loan.

Another new loan signing, Rafa Soares, is battling to shake off an ankle injury and Lucas Piazon is out with a broken leg.

Midfielder Tom Cairney will be assessed after dropping out of the Scotland squad with a knee problem.

Cardiff defender Matt Connolly is fit for the trip to Craven Cottage after recovering from an ankle problem.

"You'll always lose Matt for five or six games with his ankles, I had the same at QPR with him. I'm afraid he's got ankles like pieces of paper at times," boss Neil Warnock said.

Lee Camp and Callum Paterson are in training following spells in the treatment room but are unlikely to be back in action until next month.

Kadeem Harris and Rhys Healey remain on the long-term absentee list.

QPR striker Matt Smith reveals Fulham frustration

QPR striker Matt Smith has expressed disappointment at his Fulham career.

Smith joined Fulham from Leeds United in 2014 but failed to nail down a regular role and spent time on loan at Bristol City.

He slipped down the pecking order under Slavisa Jokanovic last term and made the short trip across west London to Loftus Road in January.

Smith is enjoying working with Ian Holloway at QPR and said: "The manager here believes in me and that's very important.

"Slavisa Jokanovic has been successful at Fulham, getting them to the play-offs last season, but it was not a good time for me there personally."

Smith has scored six times in 21 appearances for QPR and the 6ft 6in striker admits his style is a bit of a throwback.

He explained to the Metro: "It's difficult nowadays as a taller striker — I'm a bit of a dying breed.

"You don't tend to find too many really tall target men any more.

"Managers look for a bit more of an all-rounder and from that perspective it can be a bit of a love-hate thing if you're my size.

"That's what I've found difficult but I hope I can prove my worth longer-term here. It's up to me."

Opta stats

The Cottagers haven't kept a clean sheet against Cardiff in any competition in their last 19 games against them, since a 2-0 win in March 1989.

These sides haven't shared a goalless draw in a league game since December 1974, with there being at least one goal in each of the last 30 games between the sides.

None of the last six clubs top of the Championship at the end of August have gone on to win automatic promotion, and only two have finished in the top six.

Prutton's prediction

Can Cardiff go to Craven Cottage and bully Fulham? They got a great win at Wolves a couple weeks ago by doing a bit of a job on them and Neil Warnock's side have been fantastic so far.

Slavisa Jokanovic hasn't looked too happy so far this season and his side haven't got off to the start many expected them to. I think Cardiff can snatch another win here to keep up their perfect run.

Prutton predicts: 0-2 (18/1 with Sky Bet)

Cairney out of Cardiff clash
by Dan on September 8, 2017

Fulham captain Tom Cairney will miss tomorrow's Craven Cottage clash with Championship leaders Cardiff City due to injury, Slavisa Jokanovic has confirmed during his pre-match press conference this afternoon.

The playmaker has been troubled by a knee injury since the summer, having had an operation in Barcelona to repair a meniscus tear during pre-season, and was withdrawn from the Scotland squad for their recent World Cup qualifiers in order to manage his fitness following his return in the 2-0 win at Ipswich last month. Cairney, who had an injection to ensure he could start the game at Portman Road, is definitely out of tomorrow afternoon's game and he is not the only first-team figure Fulham will be without.

Jokanovic told the assembled journalists at Motspur Park:

We face some limitations for this game. Tom Cairney is out, Neeskens Kebano and Sheyi Ojo came back [from international duty] with some problems and won't be available.

Jokanovic aims to end Cardiff's perfect start
by Dan on September 8, 2017

Slavisa Jokanovic wants his Fulham side to continue where they left off against Ipswich and dent another flawless start to the season – this time when league leaders Cardiff City visit Craven Cottage tomorrow.

The Serbian head coach was full of praise for Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock, who was today handed the Championship Manager of the Month award for August, and Cardiff's excellent start to the campaign which has seen them storm to the top of the table, with striker Junior Hoilett and summer signing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to the fore. Jokanovic told his pre-match press conference at Motspur Park:

Neil Warnock is a fantastic manager. He's got experience of being promoted. This season is long but Cardiff have started fantastically. We want to try and put an end to this run for them. We know how just hard it is to play against Cardiff; a physical, strong team. They are very intense and full of confidence.

The Fulham boss is hoping his side can test victory at Craven Cottage for the first time this season tomorrow afternoon, but knows the task will not be easy.

It's important to get the first home win. Tomorrow is a great chance for us, but it's always important to win the game.

Slavisa Jokanovic reveals the full scale of Fulham's injury crisis ahead of Cardiff City clash

The Cottagers will be missing a number of key players when the Bluebirds travel to the English capital on Saturday

Slavisa Jokanovic has revealed the full extent of his Fulham side's injury crisis ahead of Cardiff City's trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The Bluebirds go into the match in the English capital on the back of five straight league wins, a run of form that earned Neil Warnock the Championship's Manager of the Month award for August while winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scooped the player gong.

The Cottagers have had a difficult start to the 2017-18 campaign but registered their first league win in the final game before the international break as they defeated high-flying Ipswich 2-0 at Portman Road.

Joe Ralls battles with Tom Cairney of Fulham

But Fulham manager Jokanovic has revealed a host of his first team players - including Tom Cairney, Lucas Piazon and big-money summer signing Rui Fonte - are unavailable to face the Bluebirds.

"We will face some limitations for this game," said Jovanovic.

"Lucas Piazon is out for a long time. Rafa Soares has still not started working with us, we expect he can be part of the group in the next two weeks and I can probably think about using him after the next internal break.

"Tom Cairney is out for this game, Rui Fonte too. [Neeskens] Kebano and Sheyi Ojo came back with some problems after international duty, and they are not going to be available for tomorrow's game. I believe that's it."

Warnock on the other hand has revealed that his international players have returned fully fit, although centre-back Bruno Manga had not arrived back at the club's Vale Resort training base on Friday morning having featured for Gabon in their shock win against Ivory Coast.

The veteran boss was also handed a fitness boost as new signings Lee Camp and Callum Paterson have both returned to training while central defender Matt Connolly is also fully fit again.

Slavisa Jokanovic reveals Fulham's injury woes ahead of visit of Cardiff City

The Fulham boss has a selection headache for tomorrow's game with a number of his stars out injured

Fulham will be without a number of key stars tomorrow as they welcome Cardiff City to Craven Cottage.

Captain Tom Cairney, Rafa Soares, Rui Fonte, Neeskens Kebano and Sheyi Ojo are all ruled out of the Championship tie as a result of injury, but new boys Yohan Mollo and Jordan Graham may play some part in the game.

Cairney pulled out of the Scotland internationals as he nursed a knee injury, while Kebano and Ojo both picked up knocks whilst away on international duty.

Fonte, meanwhile, is still nursing a groin problem he suffered in the 2-0 win over Ipswich.

Speaking at his press conference, the boss said: "Lucas Piazon is out for a long time. Rafa Soares has still not started working with us, we expect he can be part of the group in the next two weeks and I can probably think about using him after the next internal break.

"Tom Cairney is out for this game, Rui Fonte too. (Neeskens) Kebano and Sheyi Ojo came back with some problems after international duty, and they are not going to be available for tomorrow's game. I believe that's it."
