Potential add-ons perhaps?

Should stayed with us, back to the same level again

Every time I saw Jordy Clasie in a Saints shirt, he just seemed really lacking to be honest. Constant sideways passing, never forward, and just not a decent presence in a deeper CM role. He didn't really look like a grafter who wins you the ball back or a player that lieks to find the ST/AM in the hole between the defence and midfield. Hes been really disappointing considering how, before Saints, he looked technically as good as anyone around. I also heard hes making a move abroad....

I think people on here need to appreciate that one can be disappointed in no signings as of this moment, whilst still having faith for the start of the season. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Somehow Jokane worked his magic to overcome it, but you could tell he wasn't happy. If he has to go through the same circus again this season, it won't end well.
Of course the Club may have had a few players 'lined up' ready to sign and Joka has said 'No-thanks'?
It is all guesswork.

We all want new players / a bigger squad.  No-one can really believe that FFC are happy to drift along not buying after the four years of waiting to get back into the top flight.
I would rather we wait and get the right people rather than rush out and spend stupid money on just about anyone, or no-bodies, who will not benefit the club.
If we had signed 4 or 5 players, people would be on here slagging them off and saying we have bought rubbish / Championship at best / over the hill / unproven --- etc etc  players.
It is in no-ones interests to half a thread bare squad, but people are very quick to assume that the club are simply bumbling along
doing nothing.

Have a little faith and enjoy the world Cup!!

Surely the Club should not be lining players up before the HC has given the green light that he likes them?

I think many on here don't think the club are bumbling along doing nothing, the perception is that they are very busy but not using their time wisely!

I originally made the criticism today of no signings within a club/squad that is currently the most desperate/small in the EPL. I think everyone involved is super busy but for whatever reason, we haven't signed players. If I was to wager a guess, it would be over price and us not willing to pay even slightly over the odds at the early stage of negotiations. Total guess though. I don't think we have staff twiddling thumbs and sitting on their backsides but maybe, at this stage, being inflexible on paying by any means, over the odds.

If we can get mitro ,with extended contracts for Tc and Sess, then things will really start .To me it tends to suggest that Joka isnt desperate to replace that many players in our starting line up .  Maybe three, with the addition over 3 to 4 more who can start matches being addded nearer the close of the window.

A lot may also hang on fact that we 'expect' to re-sign most of our loanees?
Piazon / Targett (not looking good though) / Kalas / Mitro etc...

For me, that's almost definitely the case. I expected us to sign Kalas/Piazon/Targett/Mitro at the least hence why I think our current squad is clearly weaker as of this moment too when we start pre season.

Kalas/ piazon stalling because of Conte situation I guess ,as for targett think staying at saints, mitro is the one that will get over the line,it's just when?

He in no way at all should have stayed with us. Following that season we finished 17th, we were in no mans land, Patrick made around 20 appearances mostly off the bench, and some team came in offering millions for him and us.

In the years that followed, we invested that money in buying a team rather than focussing on individuals, and he ended up winning plenty of trophies no matter what level; and I'm sure he's being well paid by the oil money in Manchester. Worked out for him, worked out for us

And  although they missed out on Europe, I doubt many people think we're on the same level as Leicester. If we were, we would have spent 50millon this summer as well as having 6 players in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

To be fair Leicester are considerably ahead of us. They're aiming top 6.

It does seem odd as they have already spent £25m on James Maddison.

I know they don't play in exactly the same position but they're not millions of miles apart in some respects.

FulhamStu

If a player is really worth us signing (Mitro) his club are going to want to extract as much money as they can.  We on the other hand are going to try and get him for a little as necessary as we will have a budget for signings as well as wages and want to get the best we can within that budget.

It's a bit like going onto eBay where the final day for bidding is when the window shuts.

If the selling club are happy to take what you are offering, ina ll likelihood, that said player is potentially not going to be very good or you are offering too much.

Unless you are happy to just go in and pay over the odds, this process all takes time.

You have agents trying to extract as much for the player as well and the player may want to go to a bigger or other club for many reasons.

It's all very complicated and difficult to get right.

Yes, it's essential we sign in certain areas and of course we will.  Whether we can get the right players at the right price is the key.  We don't HAVE to sign 8-10 new players although that would be nice, what we HAVE to do is sign 4-5 starting players of the right quality, eg bloody good and who play those positions we most need to strengthen.

One slightly interesting thing I worked out in the absence of any transfer dealings. Newly promoted teams haven't stuck with the same Keeper that brought them up pretty much across the board with the exception of Burnley in the last 4 or 5 years.

Wolves and Cardiff have already signed replacements in Rui Patricio and Alex Smithies (although Smithies isn't necessarily guaranteed to be #1)

Brighton signed Mat Ryan, Huddersfield signed Lossl and Newcastle went back and forth between Darlow and Elliott until they signed Dubravka in January

Burnley stuck with Heaton, Boro signed Victor Valdes, Hull signed David Marshall and he ended up being in and out with Jakupovic (neither of which played for Hull in the season before)

and then the season before was the only time in recent years all three stuck with their Keeper (Watford/Gomes, Bournemouth/Boruc, Norwich/Ruddy)

All this is to say, the difference in Keeper required in the respective divisions is massive and I'd be curious to see if we bucked the trend and stuck with Bettinelli as #1.

Regarding the transfer situation at the moment, or this board at times!

You can please SOME of the people ALL of the time.

You can please ALL of the people SOME of the time.

But you cannot please ALL of the people ALL of the time.

Just like BREXIT!!

What keeps the debate going as to the extent of the Club's ineptitude in transfer dealings is that none of us know enough to be too sure of our opinion. Eddie Howe's statement may be an indication of where the balance of probability lies:

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11743/11425041/eddie-howe-says-bournemouth-face-diffulct-transfer-window

Eddie Howe admits Bournemouth face a "difficult" summer in the transfer market as he looked to reinforce his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Cherries have made one key signing since the end of last season - midfielder David Brooks joining from Sheffield United on a four-year deal.

Bournemouth saw a £10m bid for Brentford defender Chris Mepham rejected last month and Howe admits recruitment has been a struggle, partly due to the ongoing World Cup in Russia.

"This transfer window has been difficult," he said. "Transfer fees as always tend to go northwards, with the World Cup year and the window closing earlier.

"From the manager's perspective, you want to get the players in as early as you can to work with them and build your team for pre-season.

"This year is perhaps the first season where we haven't been able to do that. Certainly between now and the start of the season we will be active and looking to do business."

Howe seemingly ruled out a move for Jack Wilshere, who is currently a free agent after leaving boyhood club Arsenal.

"I've said many times that we love Jack but financially it might be a difficult one for us," he added.
