EXCLUSIVE: Leeds, Fulham, Swansea in hunt for former Wednesday star

Fulham, Leeds United and Swansea City are leading the chase to sign free agent midfielder Sean Clare, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.

The 21-year-old left Sheffield Wednesday last month when his contract expired at Hillsborough, after he rejected the chance to stay.

Aston Villa had tied up a deal, but their financial issues earlier this summer saw the deal fall through.

Whilst Villa remain keen, their failure to push through the move has seen rivals step in, and now a number of other clubs have stepped in to hold talks with Clare.

The 21-year-old Clare came through the youth ranks at Wednesday, after joining from the Nike Academy in 2016, but now he is set to leave after rejecting a new deal.

Because Clare is under 23, Wednesday will be due compensation, but it will be nowhere near Clare's actual value.

Leeds have held a long-standing interest in Clare, and their need has increased following an injury sustained by Adam Forshaw that will see the midfielder sidelined for up to eight weeks.

Out of interest, why would we be interested? Is he one for the future, backup?

Soon as you get Wednesday here the clock will get ticking faster and faster .

We Are Premier League

Gayle to Brom on loan, would have been a nice addition for us.

We need to sound the alarm.  We need three or four in three days.  Ain't gonna happen.  Badly need a back up striker and a left back.

How do you know it wont? The majority of deadline day deals are prepped weeks in advance and usually only require the final touches to the deal and a medical.

Agree... It takes many nights for the overnight success  :003:

Don't we already have players who have banged them in for fun at that level in our current setup though...

If it';s backup to Mitro, we really shouold be after the Perezs of the world. Decent players who score goals and who can offer something different. Not under 23 from the championship, lets see him play for Villa first before we get excited. Also 14 in 41 isn't particularly impressive.

Perhaps they can give him to us for free as they owe us £6m

I agree. I was more pointing to the fact we have players currently in our setup that have achieved exactly what this guy has and a lot of them seem to struggle to make the jump even to championship.

Absolutely, sorry I was agreeing with you - though my writing style doesn't always make that clear. Id rather Thorsteinsson came through for us rather than this guy.

Talented player, highly rated and have heard good things about him, could be one to join and then go back out on loan again

Two Ton Ted

Scott Malone was sold on 5th July 2017 and we STILL have not signed a permanent replacement left back.

Pretty poor showing from the recruitment team...

Never ever bloody anything ever.

When talking about signing a permanent left back, yes.
Never ever bloody anything ever.

toshes mate

Yes, TerryR, if you consider the evidence, it is a 'poor showing'.  Let's consider the scenario at its worse last season where the debates on here were about not playing RS at left back and yet what options did SJ have when none of the solutions tried actually rewarded us with continued success and good performances?  Lo and behold come Matt Targett and the solution was 'sign a left back' as it had been since Scott Malone was sold to Huddersfield.  Nearly ten weeks later from last season's close we still haven't got a bespoke left back.  Figure.
