Whats a good hit rate with transfers?
if you sign 12 players for example and say 8 of do well is that good?
You cant expect all 12 to do well.

When you pay the k nd of money we were paying in the summer it seems reasonable to me that all of the new players should be doing better than the players already here in those positions.

You would expect that, and you could say they need to play to show that. But its not only about money.

You will always get one player who never quite reaches expectations.  If you sign 4 and 3 impress but one does not settle (especially when dealing with players from abroad, as it can be a big adjustment to language, culture etc), then you have done well. As long as you don't lose to much money on them, unlike Mitroglu !

On a financal side (like we did with Jozabed) yes. But in real;ity from a fans pov only 3 of the 4 did well. so 75%

For example in Roys transfer window of January 2008 we signed

Hangeland
Andreasen
E Johnson
Kallio
Litmanen
Stalteri

I'd argue maybe 3 did well for us and can be seen as a sucess, might even be only 2.

Can see where you're going with this and your other player ratings poll! I was thinking of doing the exact same thing! Will be interesting to see results ... I reckon roughly 50% have done well and it seems that's what everyone reckons is acceptable...

Reflecting a bit more.. it really does depend on price paid. Ie 6 journeyman loanees to fill the squad might expect a 50% return but 3 £25m signings you would expect all 3 to perform.

Of course, but its also relative to where you are in the league.

£20M main striker in the Pl can be seen as a £5M main striker in the championship. The question is are or were they seen as a sucess?

Likewise a free player like Mollo can be seen as a gamble, it didnt come off playing wise but he cost nothing apart from wages.

Anyone who thinks 50% is acceptable has bloody low expectations
If you picked players' names out of a hat I'd expect a 50% success rate
For me it has to be a good 70-80% so what do i put? I can click 50%-75% but I'm not voting for 50%... we're going to need a "people's re-run" of this poll next week because people didn't know what they were voting for

Agreed. I put 75% but think it depends on multiple factors eg price paid, market valuation of player if loan etc.

How far do you break it down?  I'm an 80% person as well but went to the 51-75%. and the weight of voting is to teh higher end of that when you look at 76% plus

A team needs a left back and a right back and a centre half say. So they spend zillions on a centre back who has a limp due to a long term injury but it will get better. They can't get the full backs but spend zillions on a player who is supposed to be really good in a position the team had strength in.   But he speaks no English and is home sick and the team didn't really need him anyway.

A player can be wonderful. But the players around him need to fit into the jigsaw as well as he does. We all know how good George Best was. How good Johnny Haynes was. But if the players around them are not able to play to help the strengths of the good player. Is that player a failure or success?

So with all that in mind. If a quarter of the signings prove a success in the first season that is a bonus. If they continue the form into a second season that is truly great. One season wonders are not always a success beyond that.

The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

But sometimes those one season wonders make the difference for that time qand while it might not last beyond that Id deem them a sucess.
Some of the guys who got us to the PL, might not be able to do it here but that doesnt make them any less of a good signing in my book

I believe another factor that should strongly influence transfer and retention policy is how you are building a team that is fit not only for the league you are in but also for the future.  It follows from that a team with serious relegation issues will have a policy that is financially safer than a team with ambitions of promotion.  All recruits should be selected because they will work and failures should be marked as problems within the recruitment regime, either in dialogue, scouting, or target selection.  I also believe that recruitment should be an ongoing dialogue between all those who are concerned with the success of the Club and not just at window time.  You should scout all the time; you should talk and involve relevant people all the time; targets should never come out of the blue so far as those in the Club are concerned.

A successful football team is successful through all of its parts and the better they all wrok the easier it is to remain successful.  The measure os success is never to fall below anticipated acheivements and the success of recruitment should reflect that maxim.   One hundred percent success is where you aim for and failure to achieve should be a concern for all, not as a blame game, but as an exercise to constantly want better.

Which club has ever had 100% sucess in transfers? Of course you want more to do well. 50% for me is not good, irrepective of cost, position or process. if you can get 3 out of 4 or better working for you, taking everything into account that should be the lowest kind of return.

All the comments I like. Just shows that nothing is black and white,. Lots of factors to take into account.
But the aim of the question in the poll  is really when you look back was that player a hit or a miss and here is what do you really expect on average to happen.

Depends how many of the players are signed in quick succession, what previous experience they have and how much of a pre-season they are given to bed in (unless within the January window). If for example you were only to bring in 12 experienced Premier League players (unrealistic I know) and all of them were given a significant chunk of pre-season (also unrealistic), you'd expect ~75% of them to do reasonably well.

In the case of Fulham's summer window it was unrealistic to expect 50% plus of the signings to do well in these initial stages, I was expecting 33%.

There is also a business angle to this, as in sell on fees, they may not be successful with us but still sold at a profit. With this in mind I'd want 75% success rate.
