How to IGNORE posts...

if your fed-up with a particular poster and want to NOT SEE their posts, you can!

here's how

open your profile by clicking the profile button at the top of the page



from here, select your "personal message options"



this will open an "ignorelist". To add an annoying member, click on "Find Members"



this will open a window where you can search for their name.
You can use wildcards *= multiple characters, ?= single character

click on the name to add them, click CLOSE



they are now displayed on your ignore list



to add them to your list, CLICK "Change Profile" (otherwise you won't save the list)


now, when your browsing the posts, if they have added a comment, you won't see it (unless you want to)

But the people who are being ignored presumably won't know that so they'll still be posting for the benefit of those posters who haven't taken the deliberate decision to ignore them.

And you'll constantly have to remind most of us how to activate the ignoring thing which won't work if it's us that you've chosen to ignore.

More seriously if I'm using a forum I want to see everything and don't want to have deliberately chosen to ignore something that others can see. My choice of course (and choice is always good) but I'd rather the irritating posters were simply banned. Keeping them here runs the risk that others like them join and the character of the board changes against the wishes of the regulars whose only defence is to increase the list of posters they're choosing to ignore.

assuming that they are trying to wind people up, how will they know if they are succeeding? my guess is they know because someone responds, if no one responds they'll get bored and go back to the QPR or Brentford board or even back to the offal

Maybe but it doesn't deal with the problem of groups of WUMs or newcomers seeking to change the nature of the board.

I'm not against having an "ignore" function but I won't be using it and I don't see it as an alternative to the Moderators taking the decision to exclude those who don't fit.

Speaking personally that's what I want them to do.

For me the issue isn't protecting my delicate eyes from seeing something that might annoy me but having a forum that I like using.

I think the 'solution' given is a good one in the short term.
Quite often we find that personal dislikes begin for one reason, but are then projected further whereby anything the poster puts out, good or bad, is viewed in a very dim light. Given time by ignoring the persons posts might just help one overcome the bias (whether justified or not) and lead to a little more harmony.

I don't think this will ever replace the mods using the ban, as the mods don't tend to put anyone on their ignore list (how can one moderate unless one actually sees the posts?), but this is just another wrench in the toolbox of MB life.
