Fulham eager to land Jansson

Fulham are eager to bolster their defence by signing Leeds United centre back Pontus Jansson, according to reports this morning.

The London club are looking to hit the ground running following their relegation from the Premier League and have highlighted a number of potential options to strengthen their defence. The Whites have already been linked with Levante's Chema Rodriguez, but Jansson would bring significant experience of the Championship to Craven Cottage.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds would countenance doing a deal to sell their popular Swedish international, even if they are looking to raise transfer funds through sales this summer. Jansson, a 6ft 4in defender, has been something of a cult hero at Elland Road since his arrival from Torino, initially on loan, in August 2016. The 28 year-old has made 120 appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring nine goals. He was named in the PFA's 2018/2019 Championship team of the year and untimely ankle injury proved critical last season as he missed Leeds' play-off semi-final debut by Derby County.

Jansson, who has won 20 caps for Sweden, won three Swedish titles with Malmo earlier in his career. He is currently on an extended break from pre-season training with Leeds due to international commitments and has just under three years to run on his current contract.

International Round-Up

The African Cup of Nations saw a selection of the lads involved in plenty of game time and picking up some impressive results along the way.

Marcelo Djalo completed a successful shutout in a 0-0 draw with Benin. Guinea Bissau will need to win their final group game to have any chance of qualification to the knockout stages.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa scooped another Man of the Match award as he departed after 82 minutes in Cameroon's 0-0 draw with Ghana. The enforcer's side sit pretty at the top of Group F which also features Djalo's Guinea Bissau.

Ibrahima Cisse completed the distance as Guinea picked up a crucial 2-0 win against Burundi. Guinea are likely to progress as they top the ranking of third-placed teams with four points.

Jean Michäel Seri featured for 70 minutes as Ivory Coast fell to a 1-0 defeat to group leaders Morocco. Ivory Coast now sit level on points with South Africa in the race for the last 16.

Elsewhere, in the Gold Cup, Tim Ream helped USA to the semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Curacao. They now face Jamaica in the last four. Schalke's Weston McKennie struck the vital blow as Haiti face Mexico in the other face-off.

Targett completes move to Aston Villa

Aston Villa  have competed the signing of Matt Targett from Southampton.

Fulham were keen to buy Targett, 23, this summer, although they did not make a formal bid prior to Villa having an offer for the left-back accepted.

He has joined the newly promoted club for £14m, potentially rising to £17.5m with add-ons.

Targett played a key role in Fulham's promotion to the Premier League when he was on loan from Southampton during the second half of the season before last.

Fulham wanted to buy him last summer but were unable to agree a deal with Southampton and Targett stayed at St Mary's

Fulham reignited their interest in the player, with manager Scott Parker looking to revamp his squad following the Whites' relegation back to the Championship.

However, Targett has been given the chance to play top-flight football next season and Fulham are looking elsewhere.

Leeds star Pontus Jansson wanted by Fulham as Scott Parker plans promotion charge

FULHAM are targeting Leeds star Pontus Jansson as they look to add much needed steel to the club's defence.

The west Londoners struggled at the back last season, conceding more goals than any other Premier League team as they were relegated back to the Championship.

Scott Parker took charge of Fulham at the back end of the campaign and managed to steady the ship, albeit too late to avoid demotion.

Parker deployed Calum Chambers as holding midfielder ahead of his preferred centre back pairing of Tim Ream and Maxime Le Marchand.

But the Arsenal loanee has returned to his parent club and is unlikely to be back at Craven Cottage for a second campaign.

And according to Daily Telegraph football news correspondent Matt Law, Fulham want to bolster their defensive options by bringing in Jansson from Leeds.

"Hearing Fulham are very keen on trying to sign Pontus Jansson from Leeds," the journalist tweeted.

The Sweden international defender has plied his trade at Elland Road for the last three seasons, becoming something of a cult figure in the process.

But after yet another failed promotion bid, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is planning wholesale changes this summer.

The Argentine manager dropped Jansson for the Peacocks' dramatic play-off semi-final second-leg defeat to Derby.

And while he has spoken of his love for Leeds, a move to Fulham could prove tempting as he has just 12 months remaining on his contract.

"I think as a player you have to respect and know your club, know the history, know how big the club is," Jansson told FourFourTwo in May.

"I really know what this club means to people, so for me it's a responsibility; you have to do something for the club.

"I had an offer to leave last summer, and I said to my agent, 'I don't want to leave Leeds in this way'.

"I didn't want people to remember me for negative things, thinking, 'This guy didn't care about the club'."

Leeds paid Torino £3.5m for the 28-year-old, who spent six months on loan at the Yorkshire club at the club before making the move permanent in February 2017.

Report: Fulham and Sheffield United baulk at Middlesbrough's Britt Assombalonga's demands

Championship giants Boro could lose Assombalonga, but could he play Premier League football for the first time at Sheffield United?

Middlesbrough are demanding £15 million for star striker Britt Assombalonga this summer with TEAMtalk claiming that such a fee is putting off both Fulham and Sheffield United.

Despite the departure of Tony Pulis, with whom Assombalonga never saw eye to eye, the 26-year-old is facing an uncertain future at the Riverside.

He is just one of a number of strikers Sheffield United are looking at as Chris Wilder's side prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 12 years. Fulham, meanwhile, are hoping to return to the top flight at the first time of asking and signing a centre-forward with an excellent track record in the Championship wouldn't be a bad idea.

TEAMtalk, however, points out that Middlesbrough want to recoup every penny of the £15 million they paid Nottingham Forest for Assombalonga two years ago – and such a fee could potentially scupper moves to Bramall Lane or Craven Cottage.

You could hardly blame Fulham if they were a little wary of paying huge sums for individual players this summer. After all, they spent over £100 million on new talent last year, only to finish 19th in the Premier League.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, apparently have reservations about shattering their transfer record for a player who has never played Premier League football before and rightly so.

And, according to TEAMtalk, this could force Assombalonga to consider a move to China or the Middle East.

Club close to getting a deal done to land Fulham forward, talks progressing

Fanatik reports Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor have made progression during transfer talks to sign Aboubakar Kamara from Fulham.

During the last transfer window, the 24 year old joined the Turkish club from Fulham on a six month loan deal but his performances didn't meet expectations.

However, the Super Lig side's new club manager Sergen Yalcin remains keen on keeping Kamara and Fanatik claims the Turkish club are moving closer to agreeing a new loan deal.

It's reported they've already agreed on personal terms with the French attacker and now just need to convince the Championship side.

Fulham are said to be interested in parting ways with Kamara after last year's disciplinary issues and Yalcin wants the player to join his club before the first leg of the Europa League qualifiers.

He made 13 appearances for Yeni Malatyaspor last season, scoring just a single goal, and is under contract at Craven Cottage until June 2021.

Luton sign former Manchester United and Millwall midfielder

Ryan Tunnicliffe in action for Millwall last season

Luton have made their third signing of the summer with the arrival of former Millwall, Fulham and Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe.

The 26-year-old has a host of Championship experience to his name, as he spent the last two seasons with Millwall, making 31 appearances and scoring three times in the 2018-19 campaign, helping the Lions to safety and also an FA Cup quarter-final.

Tunnicliffe had initially come through the ranks at Old Trafford, making two two substitute appearances in the League Cup, while having loan spells in the second tier of English football with Peterborough, Barnsley and Ipswich.

He left the Red Devils in January 2014 to join former United coach Rene Meulensteen at Fulham, making 63 appearances over three seasons for the Cottagers, with loan stints at Wigan, and Blackburn Rovers.

With over 200 appearances in the top two divisions of English football clock up, Tunnicliffe's addition backs up the Championship experience added by both Callum McManaman and Martin Cranie, as boss Graeme Jones said: "Ryan is somebody with a great pedigree, having been at Man United as a kid.

"Again, he is in the category of a player who comes with great Championship experience and who has also played in the Premier League.

"He can play on the left or right side of midfield, is technically capable and physically he's an animal in terms of distance and intensity.

"I know from speaking to both Ryan and those who have worked with him that he's a good character, and at 26 years old he's in the peak of his career

"We need to give him a home. He needs to feel loved and we need to be patient with him, because I really feel that there is a player in there.

"I'm delighted that we've signed him."

Leeds United fans have every right to question club's ambition if they sell 28-y/o after rumoured interest

Leeds United defender, Pontus Jansson has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Championship rivals, Fulham according to the Daily Telegraph's Matt Law.

Jansson was key to Leeds' promotion bid last season, although Marcelo Bielsa's side eventually fell short in their bid after a defeat to Derby County in their play-off semi-final.

The Swedish international made 39 league appearances for the Whites in total last season and was one of the key players to rely on by the Leeds boss.

Plenty of the Elland Road faithful will feel as though Jansson is the type of player that Leeds should be building their squad around next season.

So if they were to sell him, then the ambition of the club has to be questioned, as they are a club on the move, which was clear to see for much of last year's league campaign.

Leeds have already confirmed the signings of Jack Harrison and Ben White ahead of next season, and it's only a matter of time before they announce that Helder Costa has signed on loan from Wolves.

White is unlikely to be a regular starter for the Whites, especially if Jansson and Liam Cooper are to remain at Elland Road, but it's adds much-needed competition for places in Bielsa's squad which was missing for much of last season.

Fulham will be hoping for an immediate return to the Premier League next term, and they've seemingly made Jansson one of their top targets, which should be a concern for Leeds supporters.

There's no doubting that Jansson has established himself as a firm fans favourite at Leeds, but if the club are to accept an offer for him, then he could be tempted by a move to Craven Cottage, with the Lilywhites potentially having a better chance at winning promotion than Leeds do.

If you're a Leeds supporter, then you have every right to be concerned as he's a key player to have in the squad, and he'd leave a sizeable void in the hear of the defence for Bielsa's men if he was to depart.

It remains to be seen as to whether an official bid has been made by Scott Parker's side, but it's set to be an interesting few weeks at Elland Road before the new season gets underway in August.
