Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp urged to hijack Tottenham's Ryan Sessegnon summer transfer

The teenager is expected to leave Fulham this summer

Jurgen Klopp should make a move for Tottenham Hotspur target Ryan Sessegnon, according to ex-Liverpool defender Steve Nicol.

Last season's Champions League finalists are in need of reinforcements down the left-hand side.

The Reds' need is arguably greater as Alberto Moreno was released on a free transfer earlier in the summer thus leaving Andy Robertson with little cover at left-back ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Danny Rose hasn't travelled with the Spurs squad for the trip to Singapore and Shanghai amid confirmation that he's been granted permission to seek a summer exit .

Sessegnon would be the natural replacement for the England international given Mauricio Pochettino's ability to improve full-backs, but the north London outfit might have to act fast as Nicol has urged his former club to make a move for the Fulham wonderkid.

"Still a teenager," Nicol told ESPN. "Well he [wouldn't be] starting, he's pushing.

"He's there to push and he's there to make the 11 that start better.

"He's still a teenager, still has a lot to learn.

"But, what, in two or three years time, he's pushing Robertson or anybody else down that left-hand side."

Spurs have already made two signings this summer and are expected to be busy in the transfer market before the window closes in just under three weeks.

Sessegnon is one of several targets - alongside Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso - and football.london revealed in June that the Lilywhites hadn't entered talks with the Cottagers over the 19-year-old and were waiting until he returned from international duty with the England U21's.

The left-sided player has been back a while now and the Lilywhites are expected to finally move for him this month to end their long-running pursuit.

Interestingly, his latest social media activity has hinted at a move to the Tottenham Stadium is rather imminent.

Sessegnon got Spurs fans talking when he 'liked' a post from Nike Soccer's Instagram account showing Harry Kane in Tottenham's new home shirt for the upcoming 2019/20 season.

Fellow London side on verge of landing Fulham starlet

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon.

The Premier League are expected to pay a fee in the region of £25 million for his signature, according to a report by Football Insider.

Spurs have been long-term admirers of the 19-year-old and he is set to have a medical with them next week.

Sessegnon, who can play as either a left-back or left winger, has accumulated over 100 games so far in his career for Fulham.

The England Under-21 international is set to leave the Cottagers this summer following their relegation to the Championship. He scored a combined 20 goals in the last two seasons in the second tier.

He then made 30 appearances for the Craven Cottage club in the Premier League in the past campaign, chipping in with two goals.

Spurs would be a suitable move for him as Mauricio Pochettino is no stranger to giving young players a chance in the first team. Last season's Champions League finalists have been busy this summer bolstering their squad with the likes of Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele making the move to North London.

Losing Sessegnon will be a blow to Fulham, especially with just weeks before their Championship season starts, but it was always going to be tough for them to keep hold of the teenager after the last campaign.

Fulham set to complete signing of ex-Leicester City forward

The 27-year-old will watch on from the stands as Fulham and his current club Brighton meet this afternoon

Championship Fulham are closing in on signing of former Leicester City wide man Anthony Knockaert in a loan deal that could become permanent.

The Frenchman is said to have already undergone his medical at Craven Cottage as is poised to join the London club.

Reports suggest that if Scott Parker's side win promotion back to the Premier League this season then the club can sign Knockaert permanently from Brighton for a fee of £10m.

But should they miss out on an immediate return to the top flight, and opt against the deal, they will have to fork out a £4m loan fee for his services.

This weekend Knockaert's parent club Brighton will meet Fulham in friendly fixture arranged well in advance of any deal for the player's transfer, and the 27-year-old will be sidelined before making the switch until after the game.

After joining from Guingamp in 2012, Knockaert went on to make 106 appearances in a Leicester shirt, helping the club to promotion to the Premier League.

Exclusive: Danny Mills claims Tottenham taking 'a gamble' after breakthrough in transfer talks

EXCLUSIVE

Danny Mills says that Tottenham are taking a gamble on chasing the capture of Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon as they prepare to let Danny Rose leave the club this summer.

The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that manager Mauricio Pochettino will be losing experience and quality in the shape of the England left-back and that the Cottagers' ace is an unproven performer at the top level.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, Tottenham have pencilled in a medical to secure the signing of Sessegnon after a breakthrough in talks with their London rivals, having left Rose in England for their pre-season trip to Singapore to allow him to seal a move away.

Mills says that he was not too impressed by what he saw from the 19-year-old in what was his debut season in the Premier League and insisted that time is not on Tottenham's side if they want to push for another top-four finish.

"He couldn't get into a struggling Fulham side that got relegated, often enough," Mills told Football Insider.

"Undoubtedly has a lot of potential but I look at it at think it's a bit of a gamble. You are losing experience, consistency for a player who could be outstanding, might not be. Might struggle, might not be able to cope at that level for two or three months.

"If you're Tottenham, and you want to be challenging for the top four and beyond, you've got to be right at it from the get-go."

Sessegnon made 38 appearances across all competitions last season, missing all but three of the club's league games.

However, he was often made to come on as a substitute, starting 26 Premier League matches, scoring two goals and chalking up a further six assists for his teammates.

Cairney double downs Brighton

Tom Cairney curls home a majestic equaliser

A second half double from captain Tom Cairney secured Fulham's first pre-season win as Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion were put to the sword at Aldershot this afternoon.

Fulham had struggled to make much of an impression in the early stages as Graham Potter's side started brightly and fell behind to a Pascal Gross free-kick midway through the first half. Marcus Bettinelli was penalised for handling the ball outside his penalty area and Gross curled the set play past the Fulham goalkeeper, although Glenn Murray was lurking in an offside position. The goal was awarded, despite the vociferous protests of Aleksandar Mitrovic to the assistant referee.

Bettinelli had already made a couple of smart saves to keep Fulham in the contest. He had to be alert inside the first minute to turn aside a low drive from Jurgen Locadia after the Brighton forward had cut inside Steven Sessegnon. The Fulham academy graduate then got his angles right to keep out Locadia's first-time effort after Davy Propper had floated a delightful through ball over the Whites' back four. Bettinelli was left stranded by Gross's wicked free-kick and Fulham were grateful for an offside flag that denied Glenn Murray a second as headed home at the near post following a short corner.

Fulham had offered little as an attacking force for much of the first period, with their best opening coming courtesy of Neeskens Kebano's pace down the right. The Congolese winger did brilliantly to beat his man and fashion a cross, but the recovering Martin Montoya arrived to nick the ball off Stefan Johansen's toes.

Scott Parker opted against making any half-time changes but his side did seem far more purposeful after the break. They grabbed an equaliser four minutes into the second half when Johansen sped forward and fed Cairney on the corner of the penalty area. The Scottish international took a touch to work half a yard of space and curled an outstanding finish into the top corner.

Fulham survived a scarce just after the equaliser when a Gross corner came back off the crossbar, but raced up field to take the lead. Aboubakar Kamara seized on a misplaced pass and showcased his blistering pace down the right, tricking his way past Lewis Dunk into the area. He twice tried to square the ball for Cairney, with Jason Steele foiling his efforts, but the ball broke kindly for the Fulham skipper to finish clinically from six yards out.

Former Fulham defender Dan Burn was then introduced as one of four substitutes for Albion and was immediately in the thick of the action as Parker's side surged forward. Steele made a couple of excellent reaction saves to deny Joe Bryan and then produced a fine stop to keep out a venomous Mitrovic effort at his near post.

Brighton mounted a late effort to try and draw level but struggled to create clear cut openings. New signing Leandro Trossard had a strike bravely blocked and Fulham successfully defended a late free-kick to record their first win of a testing summer programme. Parker's side will travel to Oxford on Tuesday night before finishing their pre-season preparations with a London derby against West Ham United at Craven Cottage next weekend.

REPORT: ALBION BEATEN AFTER SECOND-HALF FULHAM FIGHTBACK

Davy Propper in pre-season action against Fulham.

Pascal Gross opens the scoring for Albion in the 25th minute, curling home a free kick in controversial circumstances
Tom Cairney's quick-fire double gave Fulham a 2-1 lead early in the second half
Matt Ryan and Jason Steele play their first 45 minutes each as they share the goalkeeping duties
A crowd of 2,056 see an entertaining affair at Aldershot's Recreation Ground

Brighton & Hove Albion suffered their first defeat of pre-season, going down 2-1 to Fulham at Aldershot in an entertaining encounter between two sides who've locked horns regularly in recent years. Albion won't place too much significance on the result, and Graham Potter will have been pleased with plenty of what he saw on a humid afternoon in the garrison town – including an impressive first 45 minutes that saw Pascal Gross put the Seagulls into a half-time lead.

The Recreation Ground, has been a regular haunt as part of Albion's pre-season campaigns down the years, including a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Fulham three years ago. While supporters of a certain vintage will have fond memories of a 6-2 win for Micky Adams's Seagulls side in an FA Cup first-round tie in November 2000, played out in front of the Match of the Day cameras. The place hasn't changed much since then, and it's hard not to like such a classic old school setting.

Albion's starting line-up had a familiar feel to it; Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy were paired in the centre of defence for the first time under Potter, Dale Stephens partnered Davy Propper in midfield, and Glenn Murray led the attack, with Gross tucked in just behind Albion's leading scorer in the past three campaigns.

Steve Alzate, who caught the eye in Albion's 5-2 win over FC Liefering in Austria, missed out with illness, while another absentee was Anthony Knockaert. With five senior keepers on the books, David Button was rested, as Matt Ryan and Jason Steele played a half each, both getting their first taste of match action this pre-season. Christian Walton and Robert Sanchez shared the keeping duties at Crawley in last night's 1-0 win at The People's Pension Stadium.

Leon Balogun and Gaetan Bong have been given a well-deserved break, after their time away at the African Cup of Nations – they are expected back after next weekend's penultimate warm-up game at Birmingham City – while Jose Izquierdo and Yves Bissouma are both recovering from summer surgery on respective knee and shoulder injuries, with neither expected to be fit for the Premier League opener at Watford on Saturday 10th August.

Entertainment, and goals, have been a feature of recent meetings between the two sides – not least last season when the teams shared ten goals across the first two top-flight meetings between the clubs – and a healthy contingent of Albion and Fulham supporters who made the journey to Surrey will have enjoyed another watchable affair as once again they saw their two teams on the front foot from the off.

Albion almost went ahead inside the opening minute, as a nice pass wide by Gross found Jurgen Locadia wide on the left, the Dutchman showed a nice piece of improvisation to control the ball, and ran into the box to fire a shot across goal. Marcus Bettinelli got a touch on the shot and diverted it behind for an early corner. From the corner kick, Locadia, aided by Dunk, collected the ball on the edge of the box, after Bettinelli had punched clear, and shot from distance; but his shot was again punched away by the Fulham keeper.

Solly March started wide on the right, but was given license to roam and twice got into a central position to feed Locadia on the left. The Dutchman – who became Albion's record transfer in January 2018 after plundering a goal every other game in the Eredivise for PSV Eindhoven – was a regular attacking outlet and not afraid to run at the Fulham defence.

He looked a man with a point to make and was a constant threat to the 'home' side. Bettinelli had to be at his best to palm away a first-time shot from a good position on the left after 17 minutes. New head coach Potter's brief will be to help Locadia – and Alireza Jakhanbakhsh – rediscover that impressive form that lit up the Dutch top flight.

Bettinelli was lucky to escape further punishment as he conceded the free kick from which Albion took the lead in the 25th minute. The keeper rushed to avert the danger from a long ball by Dunk, but inadvertently handled the ball away under pressure from Murray. From the resultant free kick Gross curled the ball into the back of the net, with Murray ducking under the flight of the ball. That led to lengthy protests from Fulham, who felt the Albion striker was in an offside position, blocking Bettinelli's line of vision.

Murray saw two efforts blocked just before the interval, one from distance and the other at close range, at the expense of a corner. Quick-thinking March exchanged passes with Gross before crossing for Murray at the far post, and the Albion striker headed into the net, only to see the linesman's flag raised, much to the delight of the Fulham fans within the crowd.

With Steele on in goal – Leandro Trossard was the other half-time change, on in place of Locadia – he could do nothing about Fulham's equaliser early in the second half. A neat turn from Stefan Johansen on the left gave him the opening to feed Cairney, and the highly-regarded Scottish international cut inside Bernardo and curled a beauty into the top corner.

It wasn't long before Fulham went ahead, after some very good work from the powerful Aboubakar Kamara on the right wing to set up Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian international saw his initial shot blocked on the line, before Cairney slotted his second goal of the game.

Before the restart, Dan Burn came on in place of Duffy, and got a warm reception from the Fulham fans; while Beram Kayal, Florin Andone and Jakhanbakhsh were on in place of Davy Propper, Murray and March.

A smart pass from Kayal presented Jahanbakhsh with the opportunity to cross from the right, and Kamara headed away under pressure from Bernardo. The Albion man was first to the loose ball, but Kamara was quick to recover and blocked the Brazilian's drive.

Both teams continued to attack, and Fulham's Joe Bryan got forward well on the left, finding himself one on one with Steele. The Albion keeper made a good save from his first shot, Burn then blocked Cairney's, before Steele saved a second time to deny Bryan and Dunk calmly cleared for Albion. Steele was in action a few minutes later as he made another good save to deny Mitrovic.

Albion's final opportunity to draw level came inside the closing minutes of the match, as Gross swung a free kick into the penalty area, but the Cottagers cleared at the first time of asking, before the final whistle was blown to confirm a first defeat of pre-season for Potter's men.

ALBION: Ryan (Steele 46); Montoya (A.Davies 87), Duffy (Burn 61), Dunk, Bernardo (Suttner 75); Gross, Stephens (Dreyer 85), Propper (Kayal 61); Locadia (Trossard 46), Murray (Andone 61), March (Jahanbakhsh 61).

Subs not used: Keto (GK), O'Hora.

Graham Potter: Nothing to report on Knockaert

Albion boss Graham Potter said he had "nothing to report" about Anthony Knockaert's expected move to Fulham.

But the Seagulls boss was pleased with much of what he saw in a friendly outing between the two clubs.

The French winger missed today's match at Aldershot, which the Cottagers won 2-1 with a pair of Tom Cairney goals.

Knockaert is believed to be closing in on a move to Fulham, which could be completed this weekend.

Potter said he was focussed on today's run out, which his side led at the break through a Pascal Gross free-kick.

He said: "There is nothing to report. We are focussing on the games and preparing the team."

Albion impressed in their 4-2-3-1 set-up in the first half.

But Cairney curled a beauty on 50 minutes and added the winner after great work by Fulham's substitute right-winger Aboubakar Kamara.

Potter said: "It was our second game and probably first competitive game in terms of the opposition.

"It was a good test for us and, in the first half especially, there were some good positives.

"Fulham are probably ahead of us in terms of game time and that is probably reflected in the second half.

"But there are a lot of things we can go forward with and we need to carry on improving."

Young midfielder Steven Alzate missed the match due to illness.

Fulham boss Scott Parker said he was unable to confirm a report Knockaert was undertaking a medical ahead of his anticipated move.

Albion: Ryan (Steele 46); Montoya (A.Davies 87), Duffy (Burn 61), Dunk, Bernardo (Suttner 75); Stephens (Dreyer 86), Propper (Kayal 61); Locadia (Trossard 46), Gross, March (Jahanbakhsh 61); Murray (Andone 61).

Fulham 2-1 Brighton: Tom Cairney scores twice as Championship newcomers defeat Premier League opposition in pre-season friendly

Tom Cairney netted twice as Fulham came from behind to beat Brighton
Pascal Gross opened the scoring on 25 minutes at Aldershot's EBB Stadium
Anthony Knockaert, close to a move to Fulham, was left out of Brighton's squad
Brighton number Brentford star Neal Maupay among their list of transfer  targets

Brighton will step up their search for a striker after being put to the sword by Fulham's Tom Cairney.

The Premier League side slumped to defeat against Championship Fulham - who were inspired by their captain and talisman.

The Cottagers are looking to bounce straight back to the top flight this season and fought back from a goal down with two excellent second-half strikes.

Tom Cairney celebrates after scoring his first goal in Fulham's 2-1 win over Brighton

And if they can hang on to Cairney and Serb striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in the window the London club's promotion prospects will receive a huge boost.

Brighton number Brentford's 28-goal forward Neal Maupay among their long list of targets - and goalscoring remains an issue.

Anthony Knockaert, close to a move to Fulham, was left out of their matchday squad.

Graham Potter is likely to continue his hunt for a striker after the pre-season friendly defeat

The French winger led the Seagulls' promotion charge two years ago but has failed to show the same impact and nail down a regular place in two seasons in the top flight.

And Fulham's highly-rated teenager Ryan Sessegnon, still recovering from injury, was also absent with speculation he is set for a £25million move to Spurs.

But in front of almost 20 scouts including those from Manchester United, and Leicester - reported to be tracking the £40million rated Lewis Dunk - the centre-back was in Brighton's starting line-up.

Brighton finished last term with a five-month slump that saw them survive by the skin of their teeth and popular manager Chris Hughton controversially sacked.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic battles for the ball with Brighton defender Lewis Dunk

New Brighton boss Graham Potter, lured from Swansea, has arrived on the south coast with a growing reputation.

And Dutch forward Jurgen Locadia, looking to finally make a mark for Brighton this season, had the first shot - a first-time effort well saved by Marcus Bettinelli.

Ivan Cavaleiro, at Fulham on a season's loan from Wolves, was looking lively out wide - but Brighton took the lead after 25 minutes.

Marcus Bettinelli escaped sanction after handling the ball away from the marauding Glenn Murray on the left edge of the area.

But punishment followed when Pascal Gross' whipped free-kick found the far corner with Fulham players led by Mitrovic furiously claiming veteran Murray was offside.

Murray himself then saw a close-range effort ruled out for offside before half-time. But Fulham were level just five minutes after the break.

Fulham manager Scott Parker gives touchline instructions at Aldershot's EBB Stadium

Cairney, who suffered a frustrating campaign scoring just once last term, cut inside from the right and curled a superb left-footed shot past sub keeper Jason Steele.

Fiery forward Abou Kamara, banned from Fulham's training ground last season for two serious breaches of discipline, was back on the bench after a loan to Turkey.

The French striker disgraced himself by snatching the ball from Aleksandar Mitrovic for a crucial penalty he then missed - and for another angry altercation with the Serb during a yoga session.

But he did his prospects a power of good with an instant impact off the bench. Kamara raced clear on the right and after Mitrovic had a go from his first cross Cairney slotted in the rebound.

And only a great save from Steele stopped Mitrovic, after a quick break, from adding to the score.

Transfer Talk: Tottenham jump queue to sign Sessegnon

TOP STORY: Spurs closing in on Sessegnon

Ryan Sessegnon is set to snub offers from both Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund and head to Spurs.

That's according to the Express, which claims that Mauricio Pochettino has seen off competition from the European giants to bring him to the club's sparkling new home in London. It's the latest piece of business for a club that has already spent £65 million on Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke this summer.

Now, with Fulham preparing for a season in the Championship and Spurs looking to build on a first appearance in a Champions League final, it appears the 19-year-old isn't just stalling on a new deal but is intent on earning another one at a different club.

The only stumbling block could be the fee that Spurs have to pay, with Fulham reported to be holding out for £45m for a player who has been at Craven Cottage since the age of 8.

'None better in England' – Exclusive: Bent claims Spurs closing in on 'very good' replacement

EXCLUSIVE

Tottenham will be getting their hands on the best young left-back in England if they sign Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon this summer, according to Darren Bent.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England hitman says that the Cottagers' speed demon would be an excellent long-term replacement for Danny Rose, who looks set to be on his way out of north London before the end of the transfer window.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, clubs like Juventus are in hot pursuit of the England international, while Tottenham have already pencilled in a medical for Sessegnon after a breakthrough in negotiations.

Bent insists that the Fulham man ticks the necessary boxes for Spurs in terms of their transfer policy and that no other left-backs of his age have the same quality or potential.

Bent told Football Insider: "I like Ryan Sessegnon, I saw him a lot last year and the year before in the Championship. He's very, very attacking. For me he's better suited to the wing-back role rather than the left-back role.

"He can do it and that would be a very, very good replacement. I thought he did reasonably well for Fulham last season considering what happened to the club, with them going down. I thought he was one of their best players.

"He didn't always play. For me, it would go along the lines of what Spurs like to do in signing young, English talent. For a left-back there is probably none better in this country than Ryan Sessegnon so it does make sense."

Sessegnon featured 38 times for Fulham across all competitions last season but he was unable to stop the Cottagers suffering relegation in their first season back in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old already has 120 first-team appearances during his fledgeling career at Craven Cottage, with 25 goals and 18 assists under his belt.
