Parker Rues Fulham's Failure To Hang On For Three Points

Football can be such a cruel game.

There were we, on Saturday, looking as if a goal from Tom Cairney would give us a valuable away win, a victory that would have lifted us into the Championship play-off places and then, in the 93rd minute up steps Atdhe Nuhui to give Sheffield Wednesday a share of the points.

Gutted is the word that suits the feeling.

The result, instead of lifting Fulham into the play-off places leaves us in mid-table obscurity, in 12th position with 12 points from the 8 games played.

Of course, with the season still being in its relative infancy, it's far too early to worry about having to remain in the Championship for another season.

Following the draw, and as reported by The BBC, Scott Parker had a few words to say about his sides performance and the dramatic late equaliser, remarking:

"When the goal comes so late, and in the manner it did, it is disappointing.

"In the end, it's basic defending which has cost us and we sit here with one point instead of three.

"It's all about fine margins in what is a tough league. Last week against West Brom it was the same when a mistake cost us.

"Today, in the dying stages, you are trying to hang on to something, to get three points and get things rolling. But it's not been the case."

Is patience the name of the game or do we need to ensure when we take the lead, we don't give the opposition the chance to strike back instead of being content to play possession, possession, possession football?

Talking Points: Sheffield Wednesday

We look at five talking points that emanated from Fulham's 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

1. Bend it like Bryan

Fulham fans are well aware of the quality Joe Bryan possesses in his left boot, and he was at it again on Saturday as his sumptuous curling cross led to the opener. It won't go down as an assist due to goalkeeper Keiren Westwood parrying it to Tom Cairney, but the technique demonstrated to bend it around the full-back and into the middle was a joy to behold.

2. Frustrated but not defeated

We came away from Hillsborough feeling like we'd lost, but when the dust settles a point away to Sheffield Wednesday is far from the worst result in the world. That made it three 1-1 draws on the spin, but the calibre of opposition faced in those fixtures should hopefully keep things in perspective.

3. Back to his Betts

Marcus Bettinelli gave a marvellous response to his mistake a week earlier against West Bromwich Albion, making several key stops at Hillsborough. It was the perfect tonic for the Fulham goalkeeper, and he was subsequently named Man of the Match by the supporters.

4. Killer deflection

When Kadeem Harris swung over a cross in stoppage time, Alfie Mawson had no choice but to try and cut it out, owing to the presence of two Wednesday forwards breathing down his neck. He managed to make contact but the manner of which saw it spin up perfectly for the giant Atdhe Nuhiu to head in. How's your luck?

5. Upcoming fixtures

Nobody needs telling that every Championship match is difficult, but the fixture list now sees Fulham take on a number of sides below us in the table. Of our next six outings, only Charlton Athletic sit above us in the standings, and Scott Parker will be keen to see his side put further daylight between ourselves and those teams.

Loan Round-Up

Jean Michaël Seri opened his scoring account in a Galatasaray shirt in a largely productive week for our loanees.

The Ivorian midfielder opened the scoring for his new club away from home after half an hour against Aboubakar Kamara's former side Yeni Malatyaspor. The result means the two sides stay locked in the table with Galatasaray sitting sixth in the Turkish Super Lig.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa continued to help Villarreal climb the La Liga table with a 2-0 win over Valladolid. Santi Cazorla and Javi Ontiveros with two goals in the final quarter of an hour moved his side within four points of league leaders Athletic Bilbao.

Elsewhere in Spain, Fabri was booked without entering the pitch on the hour mark. He started on the bench for Mallorca in their 4-2 defeat to Getafe but still found his way into the referee's notebook.

Jerome Opoku continued to rack up the minutes down in League One but surrendered a lead late on. Accrington looked set to beat Blackpool but for a 92nd minute leveller that leaves Stanley hovering above the relegation zone.

Board Elections 2019 – Results

Thank you very much to all our members who expressed an interest in joining the Fulham Supporters' Trust board at the recent election and also those who supported the process by proposing and seconding candidates.  The nominations period was open from Saturday 31st August to Saturday 14th September and was overseen by Independent Scrutineer Simon Duke.

Simon has now provided his Independent Scrutineer's Report which explains that 12 valid nominations were received.  With 13 board positions available at the election, Simon has confirmed that a ballot will not be required.  Therefore I am pleased to announce that with immediate effect the new Fulham Supporters' Trust Board is as follows

Ian Clarke             Tom Greatrex
Jerry Cope             Michael Gregg
Sue Couch             Maureen Grimwood
Dan Crawford             Farrell Monk
Hayley Davinson.         Gerry Pimm
Chris Gilbertson             Owen Smith

This new larger board is a good mix of members of the board elected in August 2018 and new joiners.  It provides us with the skills to continue to represent Fulham supporters both with the Club and on a range of external working groups and committees.  The first board meeting will be in early October at which formal roles and term lengths will be agreed.  Consideration will also be given to co-opting additional board members with relevant skills.

You can read more about the members of the new board on our web site together with the candidate statement submitted by each nominee.

Finally, we would like to thank Archie Rhind-Tutt, who has stepped down from the board, for his hard work and contribution over the last year.

Thank you for your continuing support of the Fulham Supporters' Trust.

Tom Greatrex
Chair, Fulham Supporters' Trust
