Join Johnny on mental health walk from Fulham to RG2

Support fundraising effort on behalf of Mind

In advance of Reading's match against Fulham on Tuesday 1st October, a group of supporters of both clubs will be walking from Craven Cottage to Madejski Stadium, all in the name of mental wellbeing.

And you can help their efforts – either by donating to their fundraising total, or by getting involved on the walk.

Johnny Hunt, a STAR board member, did the walk from RG2 to Craven Cottage back in April 2018. Now it's almost time for the reverse leg. It's all in aid of a good cause, too – they are fundraising for Mind - The Mental Health Charity.

Johnny and the other organisers are passionate about raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing and suicide prevention – suicide remains the biggest killer of men under 45. The fundraising effort is being held in memory of their friend Tim Bates - this is the latest of many efforts to earn vital funds for a fantastic cause.

The group are set to meet at Craven Cottage at 9pm on Monday 30th September and will walk overnight through to Berkshire. And if you can't do the full distance, there are meeting points along the way in Bracknell and Wokingham.

Follow @HuntyRoyal on Twitter for updates or to find out how to get involved and to donate, head to justgiving.com/fundraising/blockers-memory

Liverpool surprised by Harvey Elliott after former Fulham youngster announces himself in training

Elliott, signed from Fulham in the summer, is expected to be in the matchday squad for the League Cup third round tie at League One side MK Dons

Harvey Elliott has taken Liverpool by surprise with his impact in training – and could now make his senior debut on Wednesday.

Elliott, signed from Fulham in the summer, is expected to be in the matchday squad for the League Cup third round tie at League One side MK Dons.

It will be a year ago to the day he made his Fulham debut as a 15-year-old at Millwall in the same competition.

Elliott has been a regular for the under-23s and played for a Reds U21 side in their EFL Trophy defeat at Oldham Athletic last month.

And while confirming the teenager is likely to be in the party that travels to Milton Keynes, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders revealed how the youngster instantly caught the eye when training with the first team.

"What a surprise he was when he came for the first sessions," said Lijnders.

"Some players, they play as if they are already say 28 or 29, he's a player who sees so much around him before things happen.

"It's not easy to step into our training because if you want to play high intensity football, you have to train high intensity football.

"It's not easy to come in and then have control and find combinations etc. And he showed this from the first sessions. He is a talented boy.

"I don't want to put him under more pressure, but we're really happy he is with us."

Elliott is set to be among several youngsters involved on Wednesday, with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, defender Ki-Jana Hoever and forwards Curtis Jones and Rhian Brewster also vying for a start.

Lijnders, though, had explained how the hopefuls will be helped to avoid the pitfalls of trying too hard to impress.

"The most important thing for us as coaches is to be very clear in what we want," he said.

"Even with our first team, there is a lot of freedom. It's really important the players feel this freedom otherwise creativity doesn't exist and special moments don't come.

"We need this because we play against teams who are sitting back and make the spaces really small between the lines.

"Yes, the main principles don't change. But inside that, they should feel completely free. And they have the trust from us. That's the most important thing. If we play them, they've trained so long with us already as well."

It's clear where Harrison Reed's loyalties lie ahead of Portsmouth v Southampton

Harrison Reed has posted an update on social media ahead of the South Coast derby between Portsmouth and Southampton at Fratton Park tonight.

The 24-year-old came through the academy at Southampton and has made 30 appearances for the Saints, although he is currently on loan at Fulham and has featured five times in the Championship this season.

Southampton will travel to Fratton Park tonight to face their arch-rival Portsmouth for the first time in over seven years in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Even though Reed is currently on loan at Fulham, there is no doubt where his loyalties lie ahead of the South Coast derby.

The on-loan Southampton midfielder has posted an update on social media in response to a message from former Portsmouth striker Conor Chaplin – who wished his former Pompey teammates good luck ahead of the game.

Reed was quick to respond to Chaplin's message and reacted by showing support for his Southampton teammates.

The Verdict

Even though he never played against Portsmouth for Southampton, Reed will know just how much this game means to both sets of supporters.

It should be a good game tonight and there will be a great atmosphere at Fratton Park. It's not very often the two rivals get to face each other, so both teams will be determined to get a result.

Southampton will go into the game as favourites, but the Portsmouth players will feel that they have a point to prove after their slow start to the campaign – it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Why Fulham youngster is one to keep an eye on: Comment

There is one talent by the River Thames who could set the world alight if things go well for him at Fulham.

Jay Stansfield. A striker for Fulham U18s. The young forward moved to the Championship side this summer after a prolific campaign with Exeter U18s last season, and he has already hit the ground running with Steve Wigley's young side at Craven Cottage, netting six goals in six games for the U18s already this season as they sit top of their division and are currently unbeaten.

Jay has a natural eye for goal, something which his Dad Adam was also known for who had a successful career with the likes of Yeovil Town, Hereford and Exeter City before passing away in 2010 at the age of 31. The scholar's small stature and runs in behind the defenders are the same type as Sergio Aguero, Jay being fearless and confident of scoring whenever he gets the ball in front of goal.

The striker will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ryan and Steven Sessegnon, the twin brothers who have both tasted first-team action with Fulham, as well as Ryan getting a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

A loan move could well be of benefit to Stansfield come January, perhaps to a Non-League side in London where he could hone his skills against experienced defenders of the non-league trade, spending a month getting kicked, dragged down, being in physical battles with players who have over 300 games of senior football experience.

If Stansfield can continue to develop at the fast rate that he is, then he may well be fast-tracked into the U23s setup at Craven Cottage and could even taste first-team football himself in the Championship if he continues to prove himself as one of Fulham's highly regarded youngsters.

The world could be Stansfield's oyster, and if he can get first-team experience either at Fulham or out on loan sometime in the next year, then the striker will become an even better player and be the next best thing to come out of Fulham, via Exeter.
