'Baller', 'If only we signed him in August' – Loads of Fulham fans react to key man's impressive display against Charlton

Championship promotion challengers Fulham failed to move within one point of second-placed Leeds United as they were held to a goalless draw with Charlton at The Valley on Wednesday night.

Scott Parker's side were aiming for a third consecutive league victory to help them close the gap on the Whites, but the West London outfit failed to find the net against the Addicks as they now sit three points adrift of the automatic promotion spots.

However, the clash did see the Cottagers keep their third straight clean sheet in the Championship with their defensive unit having considerably improved in recent weeks, and this can be owed to the presence of one man who has truly made his mark for his new side.

Michael Hector has recently stepped into the starting line-up after finalising his move from Chelsea earlier this month, and the 27-year-old has justified Fulham's decision to sign him with the Craven Cottage outfit having not yet conceded a goal with him in the team.

Plenty of Fulham fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Hector's defensive exploits, with many of them claiming that his performance at The Valley provided further evidence that the ex-Sheffield Wednesday man is one of the best defenders in the league.

Scott Parker provides key update regarding Fulham's injury situation

Fulham boss Scott Parker has revealed there is a "slim chance" that the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Anthony Knockaert and Aboubakar Kamara will return for his side's next league match against Huddersfield.

Parker was speaking after the Cottagers' goalless draw with Championship relegation strugglers Charlton, with the Craven Cottage outfit failing to seal a third consecutive league victory which would have taken them within one point of second-placed Leeds.

The West London outfit had sealed back-to-back victories over Hull and Middlesbrough heading into the match, but Lee Bowyer's men produced a resolute showing to fend off a Fulham side who were missing a number of their key attacking players to injury.

Top goalscorer Mitrovic has now missed the last two matches after being stretchered off against Hull earlier this month while Knockaert, Kamara and Neeskens Kebano were also absent for the clash at The Valley with their respective injury problems.

Speaking to the media, Parker has now indicated there is a chance that all four of these players will return to the squad for his side's clash with Huddersfield in nine days time, which means they are set to miss this weekend's FA Cup meeting with Manchester City.

"I'm hoping Huddersfield maybe a slim chance for us (for Mitrovic, Knockaert, Kebano and Kamara to return)," Parker told South London Press.

Fulham are now sitting three points adrift of the automatic promotion spots in the Championship, and Parker will be particularly looking forward to Mitrovic's return after the striker's impressive haul of 18 goals in 26 games this campaign.

The Verdict

Fulham have shown signs of climbing into the top-two places in recent weeks after closing the gap on Leeds and West Brom, but last night's result against Charlton will come as a setback given Parker would have been targeting three points against the Addicks.

However, one of the key reasons for Fulham's failure to find the net comes down to the fact that a host of attacking players were unavailable through injury, and Parker will feel more confident of his side beating lower-placed sides with these names in the side.

It is particularly important that Mitrovic makes a swift return from his injury problem given his importance to the Cottagers, and it would come as a major boost if he was able to make his comeback in time for the Terriers clash on February 1st.

Parker gives verdict on Fulham's bore draw at Charlton

Fulham manager Scott Parker has rued his side's 'wasteful' performance after a 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic in the Championship last night.

Fulham headed to The Valley in search of a fourth-straight win in all competitions. Parker named a strong side which featured Kevin McDonald for his fourth successive start after returning from injury, and welcomed back Harry Arter to the side.

But Charlton put in a workmanlike performance to keep Fulham out last night – Fulham had 68% of the ball, and had 11 shots compared to Charlton's four.

A frustrating night in the end for Parker and his Fulham side, who missed the chance to close the gap to 2nd-place Leeds to just a single point.

Speaking to www.fulhamfc.com after the game, Parker was critical of his side's performance:

"I think sitting here now it's a one or two nil game if we had taken our chances. There were two massive chances in that second half and if we had taken them we would be sitting here at 1-0.

"We had good control in that game so initially I feel a little bit disappointed. But in saying that we got another clean sheet. It's our third clean sheet in a row now."

Fulham had to do without Aleksandar Mitrovic last night. The Serb suffered an ankle ligament injury earlier in the month and though it was first thought to be a serious one, he's now expected to back next month.

"There is no denying that we have a lot of front half players injured at this present moment in time and this was certainly a game for an attacking piece of genius," explained Parker.

"We were playing a side who were banked up and we needed some attacking flair and something off the cuff but we didn't have that because we have a lot of injuries."

Fulham remain in 3rd-place with a point last night, and three points behind Leeds in the automatic promotion places. Next up for them is a trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City in the FA Cup Fourth Round at the weekend.

The verdict

Parker would've been expecting a win from his side last night, but they came up against a stubborn Charlton side who put in one of their best defensive displays of the season.

The absence of Mitrovic was evident. His prowess in-front of goal would be a miss for any team but Fulham still created chances, they still dominated the game and showed that they have the players to create chances, they just lacked someone to convert.

European side lining up Fulham youngster in transfer swoop

Belgian side Genk are looking to open contract talks with Fulham teenager Matt O'Riley this month, with the central midfielder in high demand.

Football Insider understands that Genk are looking to open pre-contract talks with the 19-year-old, as his contract is due to expire in the summer and Fulham not yet having renewed his deal.

The midfielder is able to begin negotiations with other clubs this month, unless Fulham renew his contract quickly to retain one of their star youngsters, a contract renewal at Craven Cottage not being out of the question.

O'Riley is one of the brightest talents at Craven Cottage and has already made five appearances for the first team, however he is struggling to get the minutes that he would like under Scott Parker.

The teenager is the latest in a list of academy graduates in the last few years that Fulham look like loosing, with Ryan Sessegnon having moved to Tottenham Hotspur last summer for a hefty fee and Harvey Elliott linking up with Premier League leaders Liverpool at the end of last season.

Genk are currently sat sixth in the Belgian top-flight, 18 points behind the league leaders Club Brugge.

The Verdict

O'Riley is a teenage talent that Fulham should be attempting to keep, however it looks unlikely that a contract offer will be put on the table for him.

The England youth international could take the brave step and move abroad for opportunities in senior football, with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Ademola Lookman having had success with a similar pathway in recent years.

'The lad is a raw talent' – Plenty of Fulham fans react to player's key landmark

Fulham were held to a hard-fought goalless draw by Charlton at The Valley on Wednesday night.

The Cottagers had some golden opportunities to break the deadlock but couldn't quite find that all important breakthrough.

It did mean that Fulham have now kept three clean sheets in a row as they look to make a surge for the automatic promotion places in the Championship.

It was a special day for one youngster in the team on Wednesday as Jay Stansfield made his Fulham debut when he came on the pitch late on in the fixture.

The 17-year-old is a forward and is tipped to have an impressive career. It would have been a massive step in his and one that he'll remember for a long time.

'Same old waffle' – Plenty of Fulham fans have their say as Parker delivers post-match thoughts

Loads of Fulham fans have reacted to manager Scott Parker's post-match comments after the club were held to a 0-0 draw by Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

A win for the Whites would have seen them narrow the gap on West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United to just one point heading into the FA Cup weekend, but they were frustrated by their relegation threatened hosts throughout.

The result leaves Fulham in third but it now means that both Leeds and The Baggies boast a game in hand over them, as do fourth place Nottingham Forest who are just a point behind.

After the match Parker was left to rue the missed chances presented to his side throughout the match, praising his men for matching the Addicks' heart and passion throughout.

For some, the comments were perfectly reasonable, although for others they were very quick to pin the blame on the man in the dugout...

Michael Hector reveals his major regret following Fulham's draw with Charlton

Fulham defender Michael Hector has revealed he is ruing his missed opportunity to give his side the lead with a second-half header during their goalless draw with Charlton last night.

Hector produced another solid defensive display to help Fulham secure a third consecutive clean sheet in the centre-back's third appearance for the club, but he had a golden opportunity to help his side at the attacking end when he squandered a clear chance.

The 27-year-old was left unmarked at the back post during a corner, but he could not direct his headed opportunity into the back of the net when it dropped to him, with this miss meaning then Cottagers were forced to settle for a draw with their London rivals.

Hector has made quite the impact on this Fulham side since completing his switch from Chelsea earlier this month, and the former Sheffield Wednesday man has now taken to Instagram to share an apologetic message following the Charlton draw.

Hector claimed that he should have really scored this key opportunity when it fell to him at the back post, but he also chose to focus on the positives from the match as the Cottagers returned from The Valley having kept yet another clean sheet.

The Verdict

There would have plenty of optimism among Fulham fans that Hector would make a real difference for their side in the second half of the campaign, and they certainly will have not been disappointed given the impressive start he has made at the club.

The Cottagers' shaky defensive line was perhaps the one factor holding them back from a serious top-two bid this campaign, but it appears as though Hector's presence in the side is going some way towards changing this.

The defender's post-match message reveals his disappointment in not being able to score his first goal for the club on Wednesday evening, but Fulham supporters will not be too angry with him given he produced another man-of-the-match performance.

Hector will now be looking to make amends for his missed opportunity by helping his side attempt to run to winning ways in their next league clash against Huddersfield, while Scott Parker's side also face Manchester City in the FA Cup prior to this.

'Slim chance' Fulham stars will return for Huddersfield game

Fulham boss Scott Parker says there is a "slim chance" four of his key players will be available for the visit of Huddersfield on 1 February.

The Whites, who are vying for a spot in the Championship's top two, are currently missing a number of forwards through injury – including Aboubakar Kamara, Anthony Knockaert, Neeskens Kebano and the division's joint top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic.

All four missed the 0-0 draw with strugglers Charlton on Wednesday night but Parker hopes they can return to action next week.

When asked about the potential returns of Knockaert and Mitrovic, he said: "I'm hoping that Huddersfield, maybe, is a slim chance for us.

"Kamara may be a slim chance for Huddersfield, Kebano the same. Hopefully, they will be back for Huddersfield.

"It will be a bit touch and go, though, to be honest with you."

Fulham: Fans slam Tom Cairney's display

Fulham were held to a frustrating draw by Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Wednesday night spurning the opportunity to close the gap on the automatic promotion places to just a solitary point.

The Cottagers dominated possession, 68% compared to the home side's 32% but they were unable to make it count as Lee Bowyer's side held on for a valuable point.

The Fulham faithful were understandably disappointed after the game, acknowledging that a huge opportunity had been missed and many opted to aim their frustrations at the club's captain Tom Cairney.

What do we think?

Tom Cairney's last goal contribution came back in November during the 3-0 victory over Derby County and he's yet to provide even an assist since. According to WhoScored.com, the player's performance warranted a rating of 6.8/10 which in comparison to some of his team-mates was by no means disastrous, but the issue here is that the fans expect so much more from a player of the 29-year-old's talent.

Scott Parker and the club's supporters will be hoping the former Blackburn midfielder can rediscover his best form as we enter the most crucial part of the season.

Fulham boss Scott Parker claims Charlton were playing for draw in Valley stalemate

Scott Parker felt his Fulham side were always going to struggle to create chances in last night's stalemate – and claimed Charlton were always playing for the draw.

The west London side were missing Aleksandar Mitrovic, Anthony Knockaert and Aboubakar Kamara for the Championship clash at The Valley.

Parker said: "The game was probably one or two big chances. It was a 1-0 game – if you take your chance. We had two massive chances second half. You take that and you see the game out 1-0.

"We had some good control. Initially I'm a little bit disappointed but it's a third clean sheet in a row now and if you don't win it then you certainly don't lose it – that's the biggest positive.

"I've sat here many times this year after having a lot of control, really camping up in the opposition team's half and we've come away with a defeat because they've hit us on the break. We looked pretty solid on that, so that's a big positive.

"There's no denying we've got a lot of front-half players missing at this moment in time. It was a game for an attacking bit of genius against a team who at times were banked up – you need something a bit off the cuff.

"Charlton, full credit to them, they are fighting for their lives and they came here and were playing for a draw from the start really. I knew this was going to be one chance and you need to be clinical and take it.

"Tonight we wasn't, for many a reason. We looked much more solid. On another day you take one of your chances, come out of here with a 1-0 win and go again.

"If there's one thing we've been shy of when we come up against teams like this – Charlton are full of heart, commitment, desire and passion – you need to match that first and foremost. If you match that you hope your talent and the way you play can pull you through the game.

"You can't build your foundations on your talent because as we've seen this year when we build it on that we've got beat through opposition really working. I didn't see that tonight. We matched them toe to toe in that sense."

Lincoln City a possible destination for out of favour Fulham man

Lincoln City could be a potential destination for out of favour Fulham goalkeeper Magnus Norman as reported exclusively by Football League World.

The twenty-three-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for Fulham, and, according to the report, he is considering his options with the Imps amongst the clubs showing an interest.

Norman rose through the ranks of the Cottagers youth system, enjoying spells out on loan with Farnborough, Hayes and Yeading, and Stockport.

He spent the first half of last season on loan in League One with Rochdale and enjoyed a decent spell, making twelve appearances and keeping four clean sheets.

Nonetheless, he's struggled for game time under Scott Parker, making just two EFL Trophy outings this season, and the recent arrival of Jordan Archer on a free transfer appears to have signalled the end of his hopes of breaking through at Craven Cottage.

Our View

Lincoln have already signed Tayo Edun from Fulham this window, so there may be excellent communication between the two clubs.

We know little about Norman, but reports from Rochdale suggest he is a keeper who can be inconsistent and make mistakes.

However, he's young and fits the profile of a young player who could improve under the excellent coaching of Michael Appleton.

With the current number one Josh Vickers only contracted with the Imps to the summer, Norman could be being lined up as his replacement.

'Send out completely the wrong message' – Fulham fan pundit defiant in face of transfer rumours

This article is part of Football League World's 'Regular Punter' series, where we gather original opinions from select, passionate fans of the clubs concerned on matters surrounding their team and share them with a wider audience...

Football League World's Fulham fan pundit has refuted suggestions that there is a need for the Championship promotion chasers to pursue a deal for Burnley centre back Ben Gibson, with the club said to be in the running for the 27-year-old's services.

The Cottagers recently strengthened their backline with the additions of Messrs Michael Hector and Terence Kongolo, thus bumping up their ranks in the heart of defence.

Gibson is currently out of favour under Sean Dyche at Turf Moor and for that reason the Premier League club are seemingly open to allowing the defender to depart this month in order to pick up more regular game time.

However, with the aforementioned incomings arriving in west London, the chances of Gibson following them through the entrance door are now slim.

A move for Gibson may now seem to have been thrown on the back burner and Jones was very much in favour of his club shelving a move for the former Middlesbrough man when we caught up with him earlier this week:

"We've got an abundance of centre-backs with Michael Hector, Tim Ream, Alfie Mawson, Maxime Le Marchand and the newly-arrived Terence Kongolo.

"Signing another centre-back would send out completely the wrong message to the lads already at the club, doubly so for Hector and Kongolo who have only just arrived.

I feel that Gibson must've been part of a long list of potential targets and clearly our interest will now fade after making recent acquisitions."

A move for Gibson now seems highly unlikely from a Fulham perspective and the likes of Middlesbrough and Huddersfield may now move ahead in the race for the defender's signature.

Meanwhile, Fulham will be seeking to cause an upset this weekend in the FA Cup as they travel to Premier League giants Manchester City on Sunday.

3 things we learned about Fulham after their draw against Charlton last night

Last night, Fulham took on Charlton Athletic at The Valley and the game turned into a stalemate as neither side was able to break the opposition defence down.

The Cottagers had the best chances during the 0-0 draw, with Dillon Phillips being called into action to deny Bobby Reid three times during the first half, as well as left-back Joe Bryan dragging a shot just wide of the far post as he drove forward from left-back.

Michael Hector had an opportunity at the back post from a corner, but he could only head over as Fulham failed to get past Phillips.

As Cottagers manager Scott Parker looks back at the game, here is three things we learned about Fulham after their draw...

Need another striker

With Aleksandar Mitrovic being ruled out of the game with an ankle injury, Bobby Reid stepped into the central striker role.

He played a false nine role as the summer signing drifted around the pitch, but when faced with a few chances in front of goal, he failed to take them and was left with his head in his hands as Phillips proved to be a match for him.

With the January transfer window open until the end of the week, Parker may now deem it necessary to dip into the budget and sign a similar striker who can play the same role as the Serbian.

Have to maintain their intensity

During the first half, Fulham had a high intensity about their game as they moved the ball about quickly and had a directness in their play.

However, they dropped off in the second half as chances became less, and they struggled to regain that tempo to their game during the second 45 minutes.

If Fulham had maintained their intensity for the second half, then they would have broken down a tired Charlton defence and created more opportunities if they got themselves into the right areas.

Have their mojo back

The Cottagers seemed to falter slightly over the Christmas period as their form dipped, but the Charlton game indicated that they had rediscovered their mojo.

The way that Parker's side were moving the ball and seemed confident and composed in all areas of the pitch showed that Fulham are still up for a promotion fight, and they deserved more than a point from The Valley.

Fulham boss Parker will be instructing his side to keep playing the way that they did last night against Charlton, and the three points will return on a more consistent basis.

Fulham's Scott Parker makes defensive claim about Lee Bowyer's Charlton side

Fulham's Scott Parker has stated that Charlton played for a point from the start when the two sides met on Wednesday night.

The Cottagers couldn't find a breakthrough in the fixture although it did mean that they picked up their third clean sheet in a row in the Championship.

The Addicks have now won just once in their last 17 games and are sliding down the table. A relegation scrap could soon be on the cards for Lee Bowyer's side unless they pick up some points soon.

Parker has expressed that the Addicks only set out for a point and were fighting for their lives in the fixture with his side.

Speaking to London News Online, Parker said: "Charlton, full credit to them, they are fighting for their lives and they came here and were playing for a draw from the start really. I knew this was going to be one chance and you need to be clinical and take it."

The Verdict

It's an interesting statement from Parker, because although Fulham dominated the possession, Charlton still had a number of good opportunities and did look dangerous throughout.

Bowyer has had a lot of injuries to deal with and he would have set up his team knowing that the first aim in the fixture would be to ensure that his side didn't concede.

Fulham, in the end, weren't good enough on the day to break the deadlock and that would have disappointed Parker knowing it was a good chance to catchup Leeds.

It's going to be an interesting run-in and Fulham must make sure they learn how to unlock defences when teams sit-back against them.

Confirmed Match Officials: Manchester City vs Fulham (FA Cup Fourth Round)

Kevin Friend will take charge of on-the-field matters when Manchester City return to action in the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium against Fulham on Sunday 26th January.

Manchester City will be looking to build on their previous outing in the competition, after dispatching of League Two outfit Port Vale in the Third Round. The Blues come into the game off the back of a difficult challenge at Bramall Lane, that saw Pep Guardiola's side nick the three points courtesy of Sergio Aguero.

Kevin Friend (48) will be the man in the middle at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon, supported by Gary Beswick and Edward Smart as assistant referees. Touchline matters have been affiliated to Jonathan Moss.

Friend will be taking charge of his 27th match involving Manchester City, since his first appearance in a game involving the blues in October 2009. Match referee Friend will take charge of his 44th FA Cup fixture when Manchester City take on Fulham. So far, Friend has handed out 108 yellow cards in his previous 43 FA Cup matches, awarding eight penalties and dismissing players on just the one occasion.

4 shots, 0 goals: Misfiring Fulham man's midweek performance leaves a lot to be desired

Cardiff City loanee Bobby Reid once again endured a night to forget for his current club Fulham as the 26-year-old took his goal-scoring drought to four games in succession during his side's 0-0 draw away at Charlton.

Reid has only found the net on four occasions for his new side in a series of sub-par performances since arriving at Craven Cottage during the summer transfer window.

His lack of goal-scoring prowess will no doubt leave his manager Scott Parker feeling underwhelmed, particularly with the onus having been placed on Reid's shoulders since top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic sustained an ankle injury.

And the former Bristol City man was once again left frustrated last night at the Valley, as he once again failed to find the back of the net in what was a largely drab affair in south London.

Here, we take a detailed look at where Reid went wrong last night against Charlton Athletic....

The striker registered a total of four shots over the course of the 90 minutes, with a majority of his efforts failing to really test Dillon Phillips in the Charlton goal.

Despite failing to really come close to hitting the goal trail, Reid still managed to link the play relatively well, acting as more of a false nine, which in turn allowed him to rack up an impressive 30 passes, equating to a respectable pass success rate of 90%.

From a hold-up perspective, however, Reid left a lot to be desired, winning just one aerial duel and recording two bad ball controls which will no doubt register poorly with Parker.

Given the fact that Mitrovic is seemingly near to making his return, Reid may well have missed his big chance to finally establish himself as something of a regular starter at the west London club.

Fulham: Fans strongly disagree with Scott Parker's comments

Fulham boss Scott Parker was left rueing missed chances as his side were forced to settle for a point at The Valley on Wednesday night. Lee Bowyer's Charlton Athletic proved stubborn opponents and as a result, the Cottagers were unable to close the gap on Leeds United in second place.

Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips was the man of the match according to WhoScored.com which backs up Parker's comments that it was indeed his team's inability to convert the opportunities they fashioned that prevented them leaving South-East London with the maximum points.

Despite having 11 attempts on goal in comparison to the Addicks' four, these supporters appear to disagree with the manager's assessment.

What do we think?

Given the supporters' likely ambitions to finish in the automatic promotion places and the run of form the Cottagers have been on, you can understand the frustration after such a lacklustre display. Although Scott Parker may believe his team created enough to win the game, the fans seem to vehemently disagree.

Both Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion now have games in hand and with that comes the opportunity to increase their lead over Fulham making this an extremely disappointing result
