UK enters 'next phase' of coronavirus plan, Boris Johnson says

Mr Johnson said: "We are now getting onto the next phase in that plan because this is now not just an attempt to contain the disease as far as possible but to delay the spread and thereby minimise the suffering."

He said even if the peak of the disease is delayed by a "few weeks" the NHS will be in a stronger position to handle it because of the improving weather, more beds will be available and there will be greater time for medical research.

The prime minister said consideration was being given to banning sporting events.

"We are considering banning major public events like sporting fixtures," he said.

"The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread - but it does place a burden on other public services."

Mr Johnson warned the most dangerous period is some weeks away as he stressed that the "lines of defence" must be deployed at the right time to maximise their effect.

He said: "The most important task will be to protect our elderly and most vulnerable people during the peak weeks when there is the maximum risk of exposure to the disease and when the NHS will be under the most pressure.

"So the most dangerous period is not now but some weeks away depending on how fast it spreads."

He added: "There is no escaping the reality that these measures will cause severe disruption across our country for many months. The best scientific advice is that this will help us slow the disease and save lives."
