Watched a programme about Mary Millington last night & the thoughts of Mary Whitehouse were referenced.  Whilst I had little time for her back then, was she right in that we now have generations of youngsters hooked on hardcore adult Internet images?

P.S. there is actually an FFC link here, one of our revered previous chairman was mentioned as one of Mary M's many suitors.

I thought she was a bit bonkers and certainly didn't justify the media coverage she got.

Mince n Tatties

I read the other day that paedophiles are getting younger, young men aged 16-26 now being caught in possession of child images.
The internet is a great thing on one hand, but on the other it is a damnation of filth....Disturbing Indeed.

Yes I agree I thought Mary Millington was a little bonkers also.

Yes I once bumped into him up at 69, Greek Street Soho, Basement Flat, he was coming out with a red rose between his teeth and I was going in to read the Gas Meter.

Mary Millington was  bought to fame by David Sullivan of West Ham fame, and he published a porn magazine called Whitehouse in which Mary M featured.
She topped herself aged 33 -  she  had problems and was a kleptomaniac, and had been told she faced time in Holloway for repeated  shoplifting offences, which apparently tipped her over the edge.

Not a fan of the Sullivans or Karen Brady.

Not a fan of Mary Whitehouse either, but she was sincere in her views I suppose.

But society has changed so much, with the internet, what was  an X Film that we tried to get  into underage, is now on TV ,  and less shocking than an episode of Eastenders.

Strange how celebrities so quickly disappear.Does anyone remember Greta Thornburg who holds the record for school truancy as well as for advocate climate change.

Absolutely, how times have changed, I remember getting to see whilst I was underage the original film of "War of the Worlds which at the time was supposed to be a horror film". Yes the Internet especially has changed all that, and I agree with you about Mary Whitehouse, she did mean well, but she was very holier than thou and insisted that everybody should do it by numbers, although she did manage to knock out 5 children herself. She probably swung from the chandeliers when nobody was looking.
So much has changed in a short space of time, I have even stopped smoke signalling and now contact people by carrier Pigeon. Before the shutdown I noticed most pubs had even stopped using spittoons.

I found her quite a figure of ridicule at the time in her Edna Everage glasses. She even had to change the name of her protesting set up as the initials spelt out that word that begins with C. However, I may sound prudish now, but in my dotage I think she was right. Joan Bakewell was a strong critic of her intentions at the long gone time and would often publicly ridicule her, however (2), a few years back, she went on record saying Mrs Whitehouse was right and virtually apologised. I think standards of morality and violence on TV alone have fallen, this 9 o'clock cut off point is not really observed anymore. I don't watch any of the soaps now but the extracts shown supposedly to wet our appetites are full of violent confrontations. I wonder if ever any character has a laughing fit in a story-line in them anymore.  If this makes me a miserable old sod then that is what I have become.

I remember my much missed and long gone father used to get the right hump with what was on TV back in the '70's, I am saddened now that I used to grin at his displeasure. Mrs Whitehouse was certainly was not a lady to easily take to though, I try to imagine her as a mother in law....

mary whoitehuse in my opinion was a disgraceful bigot.
the world is way better today than the world she wanted us to embrace.

programmes like eastenders are dreadful because the acting is quite so poor, the storylines ridiculous and play to the lowest common denominator. if you watch quulity acting and dialogue it takes a few seconds to spot just how poor it is.

i toodespite what I have just said am concerned the type of language used, particularly by so called cstand up comedians, is gratuitous rather than used for comic effect. another lowering of standards.

mary millington documentatry hs been about for ages and is half interesting and half gratuitous but she was about at a time when things were still unnecesarilly puritanical in this country.

paedphiles have been about since time began and whilst the exchange of offensive material needs to be stopped, abuse of children is not new. there are endless cases of abuse in the church, and care homes etc all well reported now, at a time when the net did not exist.

but in my opinion mary whitehouse was a disgraceful bigot that held oppresive and un liberal ideas for all the wrong reasons.

I cannot remember the last time I watched an episode of any soaps, I can only remember them having ridiculous plots and storylines and terrible acting.
Very much like Tony Blair use to be at his party political broadcasts.
Talking about Soaps though, and I stand corrected here, but didn't the name Soaps originate from America when they came to commercial breaks between programs, they rushed through a profusion of Washing Powder soap adverts every time, hence the name Soaps for these cretinous programs.

Yes, that is how the term arose, in the 1930s.

Not always easy to define, though. Is "Frasier" a soap, for example?

And her father was on Fulham's books as a yoof, but, I think, got killed in a motor bike accident in the 1930's.  This was actually a flying accident in 1923.

Don't know who she is but Greta Thunberg continues to campaign for climate change.

The young Swedish girl was also complicit in ruining a perfectly good manicured weed free lawn in Bristol whilst drumming up a juvenile mob mentality to create her own form of anarchy, hypocrisy still reigns amongst the good and the great.
