Benfica rejects Florentino's proposal from Fulham

The British had submitted a proposal for a 1-year loan paying 1 Million for the assignment + a purchase clause of 18 Million Euros.

(BTW, what's Clint Eastwood doing in that pic?)
The world is made up of electrons, protons, neurons, possibly muons and, definitely, morons.

Fulham returns the charge for Florentino Luís, this time the British sent a loan proposal of 2.2 million euros with a purchase clause of 28 million.

With rumours like this it sounds as if we are moving in the big time.

Another midfielder?  I thought we had plenty of players in that position?

What about CB???  And another FB???

If this guy is as good as his reputation is, adding him instead of relying on Stef Jo and KMac as replacements, is a good thing. No offence to those two, they're heroes of mine, but adding quality in the depth we are, in a spine position, is only a good thing. I'd also be super sceptical that we aren't doing transfers like this, AND other positions, like CB or RB etc.

It will most likely be either him coming or Frank staying, not both.

Not really as they're different players. Frank excels in a system where he's a box to box midfielder and is given more of a license to press and play offensively, whereas Florentino is an already very good ball winning DM with  a high ceiling. The below link shows a really good scouting report on Florentino and shows that statistically when he was fit and playing regularly, he was putting out better stats than the best DM in the league who is a fantastic player. Downside is that he's got little creative output because that's not how his game works best which is why he wouldn't work in an expansive team as the sole DM because the top teams expect a DM to tackle and create chances. Essentially you put this guy next to TC/Frank/Lemina and tell them to worry about creating chances while he does the dirty work and wins the ball back.

I really don't see this one happening.  Yes it would be a great bit of business for a £2M outlay and maybe the player and agent sees this as a way of putting himself in the shop window, I guess that makes sense, but I can't see it is now a priority, we have much more need of players in other positions.  Pre Reed and Lemina yes, not now.

We will see !

Luis Florentino is under 21 years old this season for premier league purposes, so acquiring him means we get an extra player in the squad, allowing us to keep more of last years squad (especially at center-back, right-back and on the wing) and transition into the new squad (especially at center-back). He will also help us when Anguissa and Lemina are away in the 2021 African Nations Cup. Great addition that will allow us to build a younger squad if we trigger the option to buy.

K....I really would like Florentino to come in as a backup to Reed.   I really would.   But in no way would I pay more than €30 million total for the young man.    I mean...he has some on the ball skill...and he covers in front of the back line pretty well... but he's raw.    I'd like him to come and play for Reed in all our cup matches... sitting in front of the back line and only playing clean up...   but is that worth €30 million?

I don't think so.   High work rate (he's always moving), but more of a controlled work rate (like a jogger)...who can make a tackle.  He's constantly moving, but he never really makes a burst to the ball.  I'm sure he's more than that...but not 30 million more.    If KMac were 6 years younger I'd rather have him as our backup CDM.

Want him...but I'm watching the game Benfica played against Lyon this past season...and he was nothing special.   And with the amount of pressure attacking EPL sides are going to put us under...

I just don't know.   I want him more than Harry Arter...but I always knock Harry for being slow...and this kid is probably the same speed as Harry.

Sure, that's just one game...but I've watched two others of his games and the difference between the Lyon game and those two are the level of competition.   Lyon went at Benfica, and not a lot of teams in their league do that.  Some do, but not like Lyon did.

I just don't know.  I think Florentino would be a pet project for Scott.   A player that is 100% focused on protecting the back line.

So how does the Portuguese league stack up against the Premier League?

Don't know.   I do know I like Bruno Fernandes and I think he's one of the better attacking midfielders in the EPL.    Wolves have a player that's pretty good that's from Portugal.

I'm not saying Florentino doesn't have talent.   I just question if he's worth 30 million this early in his career.     Considering we paid 8 for Harrison Reed...I'm not so sure.

If he helps keep us up, then he's definitely worth it.

If we go down, and he doesn't do well,  the club's judgement will again be questioned.

It looked to me like we offered 2.2M, but they value him at 28M lol.

Wasn't the reports always talking about a small loan fee and a big potential signing fee to make the transfer permanent after the season? So those figures are two entirely different things.
