I'm going to be looking for suburbia....want to be walking distance from a train station & shop's, pub's restaurant's etc....but, obviously a lot quieter than London

It's the station that's the limiting factor.

Totnes? Teignmouth?

I'd skip Dawlish which gets horrendously packed in summer.

Like both Teignmouth & Totnes..... probably favour Teignmouth as it's cheaper and has the sea

Yes, it's a nice unpretentious town. Totnes has its own character but can be a bit intense.

As I understood it work in Devon and Cornwall was always hard to find at this time of the year (out of season) . I would expect those jobs to be snapped up pretty quickly.

What part of Devon do you live?
No, I don't live in Devon or Cornwall I am just speaking on the basis of what I have been told by people who have moved into the area over the years.

I'm just outside Tiverton now (long story) but used to live on South Dartmoor and that's where I'll be heading back when I next move as this place is getting a bit much for me. A lot of my work was in Totty - it's quite well-to-do and there was plenty of work to be had there.

Nice place Tiverton, good walk's down the canal...you don't fancy living near the sea

Somerset Fulham

I don't know about Devon but up here in Somerset, cabs tend to be ruinously expensive, especially if you live in a small village that isn't connected.

That in turn leads to there not being much work for cabbies unless you're based in Bristol or Bath. I would guess that it's probably similar in Devon outside of Plymouth and Exeter etc.

The places mentioned are all lovely though. I am London through and through but have never once thought about returning permanently in the 15 years or so since I have gone and I can't see that I ever will.

Best thing I ever did.

I thought I'd try here as a launch-pad for exploring Mid/North Devon, Exmoor etc and a bit nearer my daughter. I've been here nearly 7 years but I miss Dartmoor, to be honest, and my next move will probably be back there. Chagford area perhaps.

There are parts of the coast that I like but I'm not a town person and rural parts are just too expensive. I did look at a house in Branscombe once but didn't like the neighbour's conifers!

Im reading Okehampton has a new station, and Exeter is getting a new station.... don't know why I'm so insistent on being near a train station, probably a London thing..... wherever we end up, it'll definitely be different from West London

Looking online at the Taxi tariffs around Devon - they don't look that expensive....around £2/mile....but you don't need to drive an expensive traditional cab, can use something like a Dacia Logan

Have a trip to  or call around the car dealers in Marsh Barton Exeter ( highest concentration of car dealerships in the country) apparently always a call for car delivery drivers .
Also remember seeing ad for drivers on back of Supermarket home delivery van a few weeks ago.

Around here we just see normal vehicles not London-style cabs.

There seems to be a desperate shortage of PSV drivers in Exeter. Evidenced yesterday by park and ride running at hourly rather than 20 minute frequency. They also advertise training given.

Someone I know is an independent taxi driver in Newton and has plenty of work (mostly regulars though and it takes a while to build those up).

Interesting to know as I'm a bus driver , brother in law relocated down to Bovey Tracey three years ago & is always trying to get us to move down there.

Yep, crying out for them down in south Devon. Have a few contacts who own bus companies if you wanted...

Yes, Okehampton is now connected to Exeter by rail, it's been on the news, quite a nostalgia thing. I think that the new Exeter station might be for the huge new estate/town on the eastern fringe (but who'd want to live there?). There's also plan to build a new station at Cullompton. The old one was where the motorway services now are.

I'd assumed that you wanted to be near a station so as to get to matches but it really isn't practical. Whenever I've done it I've only been able to get back as far as Bristol afterwards so have had to drive to there. After the play-off final I was talking to some Villa fans at Paddington who wanted to get home to Exeter and there was no through train so ended up giving them a lift from Bristol, where I'd parked! I might not have been so well-disposed if we'd lost...

Didn't know that the train service was that bad..... For weekend game's I'd probably stay overnight in London..... it's all going to be different, but we'll embrace it - been also looking at Exeter airport, but it looks like there's not many routes
