Fulham 1-1 Blackpool

Josh Bowler (second right) scored Blackpool's winner when they beat Fulham in the reverse fixture in September

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his 28th goal of the season but Championship leaders Fulham were pegged back by an impressive Blackpool side in an entertaining game at Craven Cottage.

Mitrovic tapped home from close range to reward the Cottagers' early dominance, with Harry Wilson and Fabio Carvalho both coming close to adding a second.

The game was held up for more than 40 minutes just after the quarter-hour mark because of a medical emergency in the crowd, with Fulham sadly announcing hours after the game that supporter Paul Parish had suffered a cardiac arrest and had passed away in hospital.

Blackpool improved drastically following the resumption. And after both sides hit the woodwork - Fulham twice, Blackpool once - the visitors deservedly earned a point as CJ Hamilton pounced on Tosin Adarabioyo's error to set up Josh Bowler for a tap-in.

Despite the equaliser, Fulham's cushion at the top remains five points after second-placed Blackburn were held at Luton, and Marco Silva's side also have a game in hand on Rovers.

The hosts had scored 22 goals in chalking up four successive wins in January, only six fewer than Blackpool's total for the entire season, and another emphatic win looked on the cards after Mitrovic's opener.

The Serbia striker has already surpassed his best scoring season, having netted 26 when Fulham won promotion from the Championship in 2019-20, and few will have been easier than the one Carvalho's square ball set up on a plate here.

Aleksandar Mitrovic's goal against Blackpool was his sixth in Fulham's past four games

Had a wonderful Wilson lob dropped in, rather than inches wide, Blackpool might have been blown away but, once play resumed after lengthy treatment for an unwell fan, they went toe-to-toe with the table toppers.

Callum Connolly's free-kick was well saved by Fulham keeper Marek Rodak and the excellent Bowler curled on to the bar after cutting inside from the right.

Blackpool did ride their luck at times at the other end, Jordan Thorniley heading a Carvalho cross on to his own post before the teenage Fulham forward was denied by the upright after a sublime solo run and one-two with Neeskens Kebano early in the second half.

The Seasiders were also thankful to referee Peter Bankes for deciding a dangerous high boot from Kenny Dougall, that appeared to catch Harrison Reed flush in the face, was only worthy of a yellow card, not red.

With both goalkeepers busy either side of Bowler's equaliser - Seasiders stopper Daniel Grimshaw thwarting Mitrovic and Wilson, while Fulham's Rodak denied Jordan Gabriel and Hamilton - a point apiece was a fair result and a particularly pleasing one for promoted Blackpool, who have now taken four points off the leaders this season.

Fulham head coach Marco Silva to BBC London 94.9:
"We started the game brilliantly against a team who changed their formation coming here, which is happening more and more and more. They changed everything they normally do, they respect us and they sat back.

"The first 10 minutes, I don't think they passed the halfway line. We scored one goal, we had more chances to score. After the break [for the medical emergency] we tried to come back with the same intensity but, of course, it is not a normal thing.

"Second half wasn't a good performance from ourselves but the referee had a really bad performance as well. We made many mistakes and that started to give some belief to them.

"We have been brilliant since the Christmas break - we are doing fantastic things. Just because for 45 minutes we didn't perform at our best, that doesn't mean everything will change."

Blackpool boss Neil Critchley told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"We were really tentative to start with, not aggressive enough in our mindset - that was my fault, my coaching during the week and my messages. I've not set the team up properly, that's my responsibility.

"Then we got on the front foot a bit more and the game and the momentum changed a little bit and I've got nothing but praise for the lads.

"We took the game to them and they have been scoring goals at the bucketload - they are a fantastic football team."

Marco's Post-Blackpool press conference

Marco Silva lamented his side's lack of intensity in the second half, as Fulham drew to 1-1 with Blackpool at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandar Mitrović's early tap in was cancelled out by Josh Bowler's strike on the 57th minute.

"The result was not good, it was disappointing," Silva stated in his post-match press conference.

"We started brilliantly against a team that changed everything to play against us, their normal approach, but we did it very well.

"We scored a really good goal, and there was a great chance for Harry [Wilson] to score the second.

"The way we were playing, I could smell the second goal was coming.

"Unfortunately, we had a break as our fan was in a serious situation and our thoughts are with him.

"We expected some changes from them after, but the game was under control.

"It was a bad performance in the second half, we played too slow and when you play slow, you give belief to the opposition.

"Blackpool weren't proactive but waited for our mistakes.

"Then we lost some principles in our mode, and when that happens, it's difficult.

"The second half from the referee was really bad, the way he managed the game.

"It was many small decisions and it's difficult to understand why he always stopped the game.

"I prepare my players to control everything, and when we analyse things, we'll find what we did well and what wasn't good.

"I want them to show more emotional balance, and keep the principles, even if you lose a bit of confidence.

"The players in that triangle that we use in our build-up are key.

"If you don't start well from the back, you'll have problems.

"We didn't move the ball quick enough and that encouraged them to press a bit more.

"We should've shown the same intensity in the second half as the beginning of the game.

"It's another moment to learn and to improve, as more fights will come for us"

A Message of Condolence from our Chairman

I am devasted by the news that Paul Parish, our supporter who suffered a medical emergency at the match this afternoon, has passed away.

I've been told that Fulham Football Club played an extremely important role in the entirety of Paul's life, with Craven Cottage serving as a second home where he would spend many afternoons as a season ticket holder, supporting his club in the company of family and friends.

We are honoured that Paul chose Fulham as his club, and I personally wish Paul's loved one's comfort, support and peace in the days ahead and beyond.

To Marek Rodák and all supporters nearby who summoned for help, I am grateful. I join everyone at FFC in commending the work by medics and stewards, whose response to the matter was incomparable.

Finally, the reverence shown by Fulham and Blackpool supporters alike served as a reminder of good in the game of football, and the goodness within all of us.

Fulham pegged back by Blackpool after failing to build on thrilling start

Fulham (1) 1 Mitrovic 5

Blackpool (0) 1 Bowler 57

Aleksandar Mitrovic's early goal got Fulham off to a flier – but they had to settle for a point after losing their way during a largely anemic second half.

The Whites have been having a ball of late, and went into today's game on the back of 22 goals from four straight wins, but for the first time this year, failed to secure victory.

It took all of five minutes for what appeared to be another routine victory to be signposted, but an equaliser on 57 minutes from Josh Bowler was deserved.

It could be that a first half stoppage of nearly 40 minutes robbed the Whites of all the momentum they were creating but there can be few excuses for an iffy display on their return.

Blackpool were massed into a low block at the off, which was almost all the way back to the 18-yard box at times. But still Fulham got in behind them, like water seeping through cracks of unfinished crazy paving.

Neeskens Kebano worked the ball in to Fabio Carvalho and a rolled cross into the six-yard box was tapped in by Mitrovic from all of three yards. It was his 28th Championship goal of the season.

Soon, Harry Wilson was lobbing just wide and Carvalho sent a glancing header just off target as the prospect of more goals followed.

Could anything stop them? As it happens, a medical emergency at the Hammersmith End did.

The match was halted after 12 minutes and the players left the field for the best part of 40 - a supporter being taken to hospital.

Rediscovering that early rhythm proved tricky for the Whites and Blackpool arguably benefited from the long delay.

Callum Connolly sent a free-kick at Marek Rodak which needed palming away. Bowler cut in from the right and cracked a shot against the bar after getting the better of Tim Ream.

But most of the direction of travel was still unmistakable and after Jordan Thorniley almost flashed a clearing header into his own net – it hit a post – Mitrovic's rebound was smothered by keeper Daniel Grimshaw.

Carvalho, in fine form throughout, produced the moment of the match early in the second half when he twisted past two defenders on half way near the touchline, then hared towards goal before firing against the near post.

The Seasiders were still in it though, and Rodak had to make sure he got behind a rising shot from Jordan Gabriel to preserve the lead. But on 57 minutes, it was all square when Bowler swept in a cut back from CJ Hamilton, with Joe Bryan unable to get back in time to deny the scorer.

The goal gave extra zip to the visitors, who believed they could go on and beat Fulham for a second time this season – they won 1-0 when the teams met at the start of the campaign. Hamilton forced a save from Rodak and the tangerine shirts got forward in numbers. In the end, they looked good value for their point.

Whites: (4-2-1-3) Rodak – Odoi (Knockaert 83), Tosin, Ream, Bryan – Cairney, Reed (Chalobah 73) – Kebano (Muniz 73), Wilson, Carvalho – Mitrovic. Subs not used: Gazzaniga, Hector, Cavaleiro, Onomah

Seasiders: (4-1-4-1) Grimshaw – Sterling, Ekpiteta, Keogh, Thorniley - Lawrence-Gabriel – Bowler, Connolly, Dougall, Hamilton – Lavery (Yates 80). Subs not used: Moore, Dale, Madine, Robson, Casey, Kirk

Hull City plotting move for Fulham youngster

Fulham's Steven Sessegnon could be on his way to Hull City with the Tigers registering interest in the 21-year-old according to Football Insider.

Despite impressing in patches on loan at Bristol City in the second half of last season, Sessegnon has been unable to earn any first team involvement this term and his contract at Craven Cottage expires this summer.

The England U21 international could certainly represent value in the market for Hull, who are looking to make their first signing of the Acun Ilicali era in the remaining days of the transfer window.

The Tigers have built a comfortable cushion over the relegation zone in recent months and that should enable them to prepare for next season with their transfer business.

At 21, Sessegnon is a versatile full back with his best years ahead of him and with experience from the fringes and first team of second tier football.

The specialist left back would fit nicely into the Tigers' squad with first choice left back Callum Elder having fallen out of favour.

It will become clear in the coming weeks what kind of system and brand of football Shota Arveladze wants to adopt at the club, but Sessegnon, with his deal up in the summer, would arrive with a point to prove.

The Verdict

If the faith shown in Sessegnon by the England youth ranks is anything to go by, the 21-year-old should develop into a capable Championship level full back at least, it is a surprise that he has not been talked about more this month due to his contract situation.

Should the Tigers continue to play with a three at the back system, it is difficult to see where Sessegnon would naturally fit into the side, however given the development that still lies ahead of him, Arveladze could dictate whether to push him into a centre back or wing back berth.

It is refreshing to be seeing transfer rumours involving Hull City after such a tough few years at the club on and off the pitch.

Bowler blunts Fulham's winning run

Josh Bowler came back to haunt Fulham again this afternoon as the in-form winger secured a deserved point for battling Blackpool against the league leaders at Craven Cottage. The former Fulham academy prospect, who scored in Hull's victory here two years ago and settled the reverse fixture at Bloomfield Road in September, steered in CJ Hamilton's cross after a misplaced pass from Tosin Adarabioyo to cancel out Aleksandar Mitrovic's early opener. It was Neil Critchley's side who created the clearer chances to add a second and Fulham had to content with preserving their five point cushion at the top of the Championship after a frustrating afternoon.

Marco Silva's men never really recovered their fluency following a 41-minute delay in the first half for a medical emergency when a supporter was taken gravely ill in the Hammersmith End. Thankfully, the fan responded positively to treatment from medical staff of both clubs and was able to communicate with paramedics as he was stretchered out of the stadium. It seems rather trite to discuss football following such a serious incident, but Fulham appeared flat after the break in sharp contrast to the opening five minutes where they had flown out of the traps.

Mitrovic, recalled along with Harry Wilson after the pair missed last weekend's win at Stoke, almost got the hosts off to the perfect start when he strained to head in a Denis Odoi cross and Jordan Gabriel turned it behind. The Belgian veteran, in for the injured Kenny Tete, was a lively outlet down the right supplying a low cross to the near post that Fabio Carvalho flicked straight at Daniel Grimshaw. The Tangerines appeared horribly penned it and a goal was in the offing.

It arrived courtesy of some flowing Fulham football down the left flank. Neeskens Kebano burst away from two defenders and threaded a ball into the path of Carvalho, whose low cross from the edge of the six-yard box, gave Mitrovic a simple finish from close range. The Serbian striker took his scarcely credible goal tally to 28 – the first Fulham striker to reach that mark in the league since Bedford Jezzard in 1954 – and at that point it felt like Silva's side might score another hatful. Wilson almost added a sumptuous second, taking down a forward ball from Adarabioyo brilliantly, and lifting a finish over the onrushing goalkeeper but fractionally wide.

Blackpool used the timely break to their advantage. They were much more adventurous, both in their pressing and their general approach, once play resumed and could easily have been back on level terms before half-time. Callum Connolly drew a sprawling save from Marek Rodak after Odoi had pulled back Hamilton just outside the box whilst the dangerous Bowler put together a couple of threatening runs from deep – with the latter culminating in a rising drive that clipped the top of the crossbar.

Fulham's threat remained, but it was a little more sporadic. Grimshaw dealt comfortable with a speculative strike from distance by Harrison Reed, but had to be at his very best to thwart Wilson twice in quick succession when the Welsh winger burst onto a beautifully weighted through ball from Reed. The Blackpool goalkeeper then bravely blocked with his legs when Mitrovic drove goalwards after Tom Cairney's innocuous looking header from distance came back off the near post as Fulham pressed for a second.

Carvalho took the attack to Blackpool early in the second half. He surged past three tacklers before swapping passes with Kebano and driving into the area only to see his measured finish clip the inside of the post and bounce away to safety after he had given Grimshaw the eyes. The visitors responded with a well-worked move of their own which saw Jordan Gabriel lash a drive goalwards from an acute angle, with Rodak needing to be alert to smuggle the shot behind.

Where Blackpool were now growing in confidence, Fulham had become sloppy. Both Odoi and Tim Ream had survived surrendering possession in dangerous areas, but when Adarabioyo erred in presenting the ball to Hamilton, the hosts weren't so fortunate. He drove into the area and cut the ball back for Bowler, who raced onto it ahead of Joe Bryan and drove a shot through the legs of Reed and past Rodak's outstretched arm to level. You can certainly see why he has been linked with a return to the Cottage as well as a number of the other promotion contenders.

Bryan then bravely blocked a rasping Connolly drive as the visitors went in search of a winner and Fulham rarely threatened for the remainder of the match, despite Silva sending out Rodrigo Muniz to join Mitrovic up front. Blackpool defended manfully as the home side switched to three at the back, with a powerful drive from Nathaniel Chalobah the closest Fulham came to breaching their defences. The Seasiders' bid for all three points carried a bit more bite but substitute Shayne Lavery shot wide and Hamilton saw a near-post effort pushed aside by Rodak as Critchley's boys had to settle for a point.

FULHAM (4-2-3-1): Rodak; Odoi (Knockaert 83), Bryan, Adarabioyo, Ream; Reed (Chalobah 73), Cairney; Wilson, Kebano (Muniz 73), Carvalho, Mitrovic. Subs (not used): Gazzaniga, Hector, Onomah, Cavaleiro.

BOOKED: Odoi, Mitrovic, Carvalho, Wilson.

GOAL: Mitrovic (6).

BLACKPOOL (5-4-1): Grimshaw; Gabriel, Sterling, Ekpiteta, Keogh, Thorniley; Dougall, Connolly, Hamilton, Bowler; Lavery (Yates 80). Subs (not used): Moore, Casey, Robson, Dale, Kirk, Madine.

BOOKED: Dougall, Gabriel.

GOAL: Bowler (57).

REFEREE: Peter Bankes (Merseyside).

Silva dismayed by 'disappointing' draw

Marco Silva felt Fulham were well below par after the league leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackpool at Craven Cottage this afternoon.

Aleksandar Mitrovic fired the Whites in front in the sixth minute but Fulham struggled to recreate their fluent football of recent weeks and Neil Critchley's side were well worth Josh Bowler's second half equaliser.

A critical Silva told his post-match press conference:

The result was not good, it was disappointing. We started brilliantly against a team that changed everything to play against us, their normal approach, but we did it very well. We scored a really good goal, and there was a great chance for Harry to score the second. The way we were playing, I could smell the second goal was coming.

Hull plotting Sessegnon swoop

Hull City are lining up a loan move for Fulham full back Steven Sessegnon before the end of the January transfer window, according to reports this afternoon.

The England under-21 international is eager to gain first team football having yet to feature under Marco Silva and Fulham are understood to be open to loaning him out for the remainder of the season. Sessegnon, who has featured for Steve Wigley's under 23s at right back and in midfield this term, spent some time with Bristol City on loan last season but had his spell at Ashton Gate cut short due to injury.

The Fulham academy graduate is behind Kenny Tete and Denis Odoi in Silva's pecking order for right backs and is understood to be in the thoughts of a number of Championship clubs as they plot their final moves of the transfer window. Hull are looking to add defensive depth to new manager Shota Arveladze's squad and Sessegnon could provide both technical ability and experience.

Josh Bowler halts rampant Fulham to earn surprise point for Blackpool

By Fulham's recent standards, this was a meagre result. Just when it seemed Marco Silva had the Championship sussed, promotion inevitable, the division threw up another one those oddities, a plot twist to remind us that nothing is a formality in this league.

Aleksandar Mitrovic made it 28 goals for the season, three off Ivan Toney's record-breaking tally last season, but the runaway leaders were ultimately held by Blackpool, for whom this point will provide encouragement that they could again make a run for the play-offs, this time from 14th, after winning promotion from League One via Wembley last season.

Fulham could have feasibly been four goals up in the first seven minutes such was their early domination but Blackpool turned the tide after a medical emergency in the stands, which delayed play for 40 minutes and disrupted Fulham's rhythm.

The game was paused on 13 minutes and, after the referee Peter Bankes directed both teams off the pitch, a man was taken to hospital in an ambulance after suffering a cardiac arrest in the Hammersmith End. Sadly, the club announced in the evening that the supporter had died.

Before leaving the field for the stoppage, both sets of players tried to keep warm, zipping passes around and the Blackpool defender Richard Keogh and goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw were embroiled in conversation, presumably plotting a route back into the game.

Fulham had bombarded Blackpool from kick-off, Mitrovic stooping in front of Keogh to meet a Denis Odoi cross with 55 seconds on the clock. A couple of minutes later Fabio Carvalho, a prodigious talent, flicked another Odoi cross goalwards but his effort dribbled towards Grimshaw.

Fulham were living up to their status as the most prolific team in Europe – they have scored 74 goals this season, one shy of Norwich's total in this division last season with 18 games to play – but faded after the enforced first-half break.

"I don't like to find an easy excuse," Silva said. "I prefer to look at ourselves. The way the game was in the moment, we would score the second goal quickly. I don't have any doubts about that. You could smell that the second goal would come for us."

The game had threatened to be a nonevent even before Mitrovic tapped in on five minutes but Blackpool somehow managed to survive an early barrage of chances and 10 minutes after the interval replied through Josh Bowler, who was released by Fulham as a youngster and scored the winner when these sides met in September.

Bowler was a threat throughout and in the first half he smacked a shot against the crossbar after cutting inside Tim Ream following a powerful run by Shayne Lavery, who got the better of Harrison Reed on halfway.

The equaliser arrived when CJ Hamilton pulled the ball back to the fringe of the Fulham penalty area and Bowler powered in a goal that will only add to his valuation as the transfer deadline approaches, with Nottingham Forest among the clubs keen to sign the winger.

"I thought he was outstanding," said the Blackpool head coach, Neil Critchley. "If he is still at the club at 11 o'clock on Monday night then we'll all be delighted."

With a one-goal lead and the sun piercing through the imposing Riverside Stand, a work in progress set to be opened in time for next season, it looked as though Fulham would add to their advantage.

A headed clearance by the Blackpool defender Jordan Thorniley recoiled on to a post and Mitrovic hit the woodwork before Harry Wilson went close to finding Fulham a second goal after latching on to a reverse pass by Reed.

Wilson would have had a contender for goal of the season had he found the net when his sumptuous lob dropped wide. He brought a wonderful ball by Tosin Adarabioyo under his spell and then flicked a shot goalwards with his next touch.

"We didn't start the game particularly well, which was my fault," Critchley said. "We started a little bit tentatively. I said to the players at the break [in the first half]: 'If we fail, then we fail being us. We've got nothing to lose, let's go for it. If we get exposed and they score, so what? They've been scoring goals for fun anyway.'

"In the second half I thought it was an even game. We knew that psychologically the game could be difficult for them, because they're expected to win."

From there Blackpool successfully dampened Fulham's mood and could have scored a winner but Marek Rodak saved smartly to deny Hamilton from an acute angle after a poor clearance by the Fulham substitute Nathaniel Chalobah.

If this result is not enough to bring Fulham back down to earth, then a trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup next Saturday should do the trick.
