Both have had their contracts extended by another year.

That could also mean we'd get some money for them

Kebano i can see why and more than likely goes out on loan like previously. Ream I just don't get extending? Our biggest achilles heel in the premier league has been defending and at no point has Tim looked capable. Every manager since our return has mainly not played him. I can only think he'll be either a fourth or fifth choice. If his happy to be fringe type fine but if he is starting the campaign we are in for another long painful season. It might be an extension to get a fee who knows. Both these two are good championship footballers.

Hector and Mawson will likely be leaving the club, leaving us with three senior CB's - one being Kongolo. No way should Ream be a starter next season, but he's fine as a squad option.

Me and my crap memory have questions?

When Andersen arrived quite late in our previous PL outing who was his chosen partner and just what was done to stiffen our midfield defensively in the light of previous collapses that often occurred in our prior seasons in both PL and Championship?  Neither Anguissa nor Seri appear to have been FFC's finest midfield characters but are they close to most expensive ever relatively speaking?   Ream, on the other hand, has been an immense success at a realistic cost and deserves recognition as such don't you agree?

Big fan of Ream, but he should not be a starter next season. But his experience around the dressing room is always handy.
Kebano has had his best season for us, even if he tailed off a bit, and deserves to get a chance in the PL - he's barely even made an appearance for us in the PL.

In our first return to the Premier League we brought in Mawson and Chambers to be our defensive partnership. Which two played most frequently, Ream and Odoi.

Marco Silva this season decided to select his match day squad's from a core of about 18 players so I fully expected with the exception of Carvalho that those player would make up the bulk of next seasons squad. This still leaves 8 spaces to fill and Marco clearly doesn't rate the other players. Regarding Tim Ream I believe he will make a decent back up if called apon and what a character to have around the dressing room. He may also be involved with some coaching and has earned the extention. I like Kebano who had a great first half of the season but didn't reach those heights after returning from the Afcon, before this season I thought he was the one player that could make a difference in a game when coming off the bench and this might be his role next season. It looks like the Seri extension is the one that is the most difficult to decide as it's not been mentioned along with these players.

I like having Tim in the squad, his experience and attitude set a great example. However, realistically we need to sign two CB's.  Tim should no way be a starter given his age and lack of pace and as much as we like Tosin we don't really know how he will cope in the top flight.  We need a top CB to partner Tosin and some quality cover, then I'm fine with Tim as fourth choice.
Clear out Mawson, Hector and even Kongolo. If we need a fifth choice look at the youngsters.

Like many posters I don't believe Ream is good enough to start in the Premier League. On that basis alone the club shouldn't be extending the contracts of Tim or Kebano. It's about we me moved on from repeated failures at the top level.

Do you believe it is realistic that we will be able to assemble a 25 man squad with only players that are good enough to start consistently in the PL? If you do, then fair enough. If you don't however, then you should probably not base your assessment on that basis alone. In my opinion.

I think this makes sense. Neither player will be a starter, but both are adequate back-ups and good personalities to have in the dressing room. Expecting Mawson, Hector, Knockaert and potentially Kongolo to leave, so we need numbers.

I don't expect the club to have 25 players who can consistently play Premier League football. That isn't realistic.
This thread is specifically  about Ream and Kebano. I do think Kebano could be used as an impact sub, that's all. I'm not sure we should be extending contracts on that basis. I'd rather the club  promoted youth for that purpose rather than retain players who aren't up to the task.
I don't believe Tim Ream, particularly at his age, should be given a contract extension.  He is a player who is out of his depth in the Premier League so it would seem foolish to extend. All the evidence is there to back that up.

Okay let's look at it another way - if we can't have 25 players who are good enough to be regular starters, and we can only spend the money we have on say five new additions - that means we do have to make up the numbers. Far better to keep two excellent servants to our club who the Manager knows their attitude and commitment will always be on point both on and off the pitch. This keeps the nucleus and heart of the team intact whlst bringing in new blood.

I disagree on the "all the evidence" part. For one, Ream has successfully played several PL games with a clean sheet for the team, suggesting that he is indeed not hopelessly out of his depth as a squad player. He is also seemingly well liked and respected, knows the players and management and has vast experience. Those are all evidence suggesting he could be valuable as a squad player and most of which you wouldn't get with a youngster. Exactly why would the youngsters be more "up for the task" then Ream and Kebano?

For what it's worth, I don't believe Ream and certainly not Kebano, are likely to make a big impact on the field next year, but I am very vary of disrupting the harmony of the squad just for the sake of it. To me it seem like the most natural way to improve the team is to keep the current starters as squad players if you can find improvements.

This is of course assuming that said players are fine with not playing as much, but I am convinced that Silva has been honest with how he sees them fitting into the squad next year. I am also convinced that everyone will get a fair chance, and that Silva won't care about how they have performed before under different managers and circumstances.

We have far too many players in the squad like Ream and Kebano aren't quite up to the level when it comes to the Premier League.  Most of these are contracted beyond the season that has just ended and are the players to work with and to support with new players. Fortunately we also have a handful of players who probably are good Premier League players.  It is plain stupid to extend contracts of players who you can be certain, aren't good enough to play in the Premier League.

Sting of the North

Personally I often find it to be plain stupid to be too certain about things. It is for example important with context, and the understanding that things may work under one set of circumstances even if they haven't worked under another.

I am quite happy to trust Silva when it comes to assesseing the players already here. But that is just my opinion.

I think Silva wants to avoid the mistakes of the past in making too many changes in the squad and upsetting team spirit and unity.  Both Ream and Kebano have been great for us this
season and deserve to be part of the 25 man squad.  I expect Ream to be 4th choice next season and Kebano to be back up for the new winger - Solomon(?) I'm sure that they both
understand that they are unlikely to start many games.

As mentioned by another poster - Hector and Mawson are out of contract and almost certainly on their way. If Ream's contract is not renewed then that only leaves the perennially
crocked Kongolo to partner Tosin! It would be crazy for the club to rely on recruiting 3 new centre halves in one window.

I'm less concerned about Ream and Kebano staying and more concerned about how the club can move on Knockaert, Cavaleiro, Onomah and Chalobah - all players who have hardly played
this season and incredibly unlikely to play any part next season....

Hope Chalobah and Onomah are added to your list, haven't been that much use to us in the Championship, they will be way out of their depth in the PL.
