Gone out in first round defending her US Open title.
How in the name did she manage to win it last year
🤔

Woolly Mammoth

By winning more points than her opponents.
Its not the man in the fight, it's the fight in the man.  🐘

That's true Woolly...But it must have been a pure fluke.
As she has gone backwards since.

No fluke mince, you can only beat what's in front of you at that time.
She may very well have gone backwards, but only she would know the reasons, which could be many reasons.
Maybe she has found it difficult to acclimatise since that day, maybe she has physical conditioning problems which cannot be resolved overnight.
Maybe her mental strength has taken a knock.
Maybe she has found other interests that have shrunk her appetite for competitive tennis.
Everybody has no doubt at some stage faced personal challenges and adverse issues that effect your daily life.

Or maybe she has not restrung that hole in her tennis racquet.
Its not the man in the fight, it's the fight in the man.  🐘

Never forget your Roots.

Quite a few of the contenders were missing last year, but people choose to 'gloss' over that. I like the Brits to do well, but look at the tournament as a whole.

She's made £17m from off court ventures, ads etc.

That whole was in her racket   !!!!

By the tone of all this, you would think that Emma Radacanu is the first ever champion to be beaten in the first round. It happens in all sports, eg major winners in golf who miss the cut in the next major, cup winners in football who get knocked out in the first cup game they play and so on. It takes an awful lot of talent and guts to win a major championship in any sport and Ms Radacanu displayed an awful lot of talent and guts last year. Strange how people wish to belittle success.

Strange people the Brits, when someone does well they can't wait to see the downfall.

It's not that people want to 'belittle' her. It's a fact that, that year the tournament was weaken by players who would be there, but weren't
there. The draw favoured her, commentators / experts who know their stuff, were saying that as the rounds went on. So it's an excepted fact, so nobody is having a go at her.

They've found some dinosaur foot prints 130m old, do they belong to you? Were you going for a midnight stroll?

Yes they are. Let's assume Fulham got to the FA Cup final, but had a really favourable draw all the way to Wembley. Would we be banging on about luck, the fact that Man City got knocked out by Harrogate in Round 3 and that Liverpool got disqualified for fielding an ineligible player? No we wouldn't. You beat what is in front of you, Radacanu did and she is a tennis major winner. For some odd reason, people don't want to celebrate that.

It is a bit funny that these threads seem to come up every time she has a supposed big loss...

You can go through last years thread to see what people said at the time.

Big loss...She hasn't had a big win since she won it last year.

Mince n Tatties

I've heard that in some quarters in America it was because of missing players, fixed for her and the 18 yo Canadian to be in the final...The Canadian girl has disappeared off the scene as well...
Personally I dont believe it was fixed, but strange things happen when money is involved.

Last year there were no expectations. Emma was swinging freely and, basically, did not come up for air until she had won the thing.  The burden of winning and other's expectations is what is now weighing her down.  I hope she can get back under the radar for a while and find a new equilibrium. We may yet see renewed success.  Oh - and she does need an established coach!

True about the coach.

Last year she must have had a streak of good fortune in meeting seven opponents who were having a bad run of form while she was showing her best ever form.
