Dan James' Leeds United career could be over after deadline day move to Fulham

Dan James completed a loan move to Fulham on deadline day, leading to doubts over his long term future at Leeds United.

The Boot Room report that journalist Dean Jones feels the move to a Premier League rival is likely to spell the end for James and Leeds.

"All signs suggest that that's it for him now. They wouldn't be letting him out on loan to another Premier League club, which is essentially going to be a kind of rival in terms of league position to then bring him back." Jones states.

James moved to Leeds from Manchester United in a 25 million pound transfer last summer. He remains the only player United have sold for a profit since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.

The Welshman went on to play forty times for the Yorkshire club, scoring four goals. James produced a decent individual performance last season which Leeds needed a final day win to stay in the Premier League.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch sanctioned the move to Fulham explaining it as a "football decision", suggesting the American doesn't see James as a part of is future plans.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed James from Swansea in the summer of 2019, costing United a fee of 16 million.

James racked up 74 appearances for United, scoring nine goals.

James will provide Marco Silva with a good attacking option, his versatility across the front line is key in modern attackers. His electric pace on the counter attack was a weapon used to devastating effect, at times, during his time at United.

A highlight of James United's career was his part in a brilliant team performance away at Man City in December 2019. United tore their neighbours to shreds playing on the counter, winning the game 2-1 with James winning Man of The Match.

James has also proven he can play at international level, with five goals and 34 caps to his name.

Whilst not quite good enough to take United to the next level, James did leave the club with his head held high. The winger could never be accused of not giving his all and did provide flashes of quality.

James will be hoping to impress at Fulham who have started the season well, currently sitting mid-table.

Leeds United face Dan James transfer conundrum as Man Utd deal unlikely to be repeated

Leeds United signed the Wales international from Old Trafford last year in a deal worth £25m

Dan James has a history of transfer deadline day drama and that was once again the case this summer when departing Leeds United for Fulham on a season-long loan deal. It brought an end to growing speculation over his future with a number of clubs interested in a player who Leeds finally got their hands on last summer, ending their own long pursuit of the Hull-born player.

James still has four years to run on a deal that cost Leeds £25m only a year ago. While neither the player nor the club have cut ties and ruled out a return to Elland Road at the end of the season, there is an expectation among many that James' tenure with the club is now over.

If that is to be the case Leeds will look to try and recoup as much as they can of the £25m they paid Manchester United last summer, but getting a repeat of that price tag may prove difficult as the latest CIES Football Observatory findings show. The experts at CIES Football Observatory use a complex matrix to work out transfer values, taking into account a number of variables such as contract duration, performance, age, career progression, international status, inflation and club level and wealth.

Ahead of his move from Old Trafford, James was valued between £43m-60m, but that price has since dropped quite dramatically. A year later James is now valued between £17m-25m, with the CIES value significantly higher than what a club pays for a player, meaning the Whites would find it hard to recoup the £25m they paid.

Much of James' value will depend on his form for Fulham this season and his contribution to their aim of staying in the Premier League, as well as his performances at the World Cup should he make the final squad as expected.

Leeds: £25m star's career 'over' at Elland Road

Leeds United winger Dan James has played his last game for the club, believes journalist Dean Jones.

The Welshman is currently on loan at Fulham, and Jones cannot see any way back for him at Elland Road.

What is the latest news involving James?
James recently joined Fulham on a temporary deal, with Leeds manager Jesse Marsch stating that he had to let someone go on deadline day in order to bring someone else in.

"It was clear that if we were going to be able to add something, then we needed to move something – and I hate speaking in that way about it because I love Dan James and he's an incredible person," Marsch told the BBC.

"He always gives everything to the group, but we were trying to work out how to get the balance right. Dan was garnering the most interest and doing this was the only way to create flexibility to get in the striker we felt we needed."

James only arrived at Elland Road last year after Leeds struck a £25m deal with rivals Manchester United for his signature, but it appears that his career at the Yorkshire club could already be over.

What has Jones said about James' Leeds future?
Jones doubts James will return to Leeds and thinks his brief spell at the Premier League outfit is now done.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "This isn't looking for him to improve. This is looking to get him out of the squad, so I think Dan James and Leeds, that story seems to be over now."

Should Leeds have kept James around?
James is definitely a useful player to have in your squad; his electric pace on the counter-attack can be a weapon.

"He's evolved over the last few months. He's gone from playing wide left to a centre-forward in a 3-5-2. The formation has changed for him and his game's got to adapt slightly," Wales manager Robert Page said earlier this year (via The Independent) when discussing James.

"But he's a talented footballer with unbelievable pace, he can score goals and he's creating chances."

It seems, though, that he had to be sacrificed to facilitate Wilfried Gnonto's deadline day arrival from FC Zurich. Striker has been a problem position for Leeds for a while now, largely because of Patrick Bamford's injury woes, and while James can play there, it is not his natural position. So ditching him for Gnonto does make some sense.

Still a mystery as to why Leeds allowed James to leave but he could prove a key signing for us.
Long term injuries to Wilson and Solomon have left us lacking punch in the wide positions, BDR and Kebano have done a job but not really bothered defenses.
James will have had a week training at Motspur Park come Friday night so should be ready to start, let's hope he lives up to expectations.
