So there was I assuming that 7th on NYE today would be our highest ever "on this day" position in the top flight. As it turns out, no it isn't. On 31 December 2003 we were 5th in the PL, with 28 points from 19 games. And we were also 7th on NYE in 1959, our first season back in the top flight.

Just reflecting that we have come such a long way from 91st in the fourth tier of English football.

5th half-way through the season in the Premier League?! Something like that should stick in the memory but for some reason it doesn't for me

I don't remember it either. But at this time in 2003 the only clubs above us were Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and (you'd never guess this) Charlton....
