George's paternal lineage is immaterial.  In Judaism the line comes through the maternal lineage.  No doubt any Jewish fans would agree or correct me if I'm wrong

I saw George's debut and and have looked out the programme. I had entered the team changes and spelt his name 'Cowen'. I saw the Maestro interviewed once and he called George the Rabbi!

Wrong! It was Jimmy Hill. And the Jewish Chronicle, no less, backs me up...

"Match of the Day presenter Jimmy Hill, who died at the weekend, was known as "the rabbi" because of his beard."

Judaism all goes through the maternal line

However it is certain that GC would have had Jewish ancestry via his paternal side - it's just that his ancestors let the religion drop away - probably a good thing as not many good Jewish footballers  :005:(Manor Solomon excepted I hope)

Cohen is the most jewish name you could have !!! It means High Priest - and there are many derivatives like Kahn (NOT Khan!!) or Caan (as in James Caan)

Fascinating thread. George was a Christian, and his ancestors were Jewish. He was proud of his ancestry
