I was at the Putney end for this classic a young Les Barrett, St John's punch on Pearson. Not a spectator football shirt in sight.

The good old days, i was standing on the terraces at the Riverside and i dropped a half a crown on the packed terracing which i could never find.
So if anyone did pick it up, and it's dated 1958 it is definitely mine, thank you.

Please no jokes about you finding a 1957 half a crown so it cannot be mine, your anticipated cooperation is appreciated.

As was I and I remember not just Barrett's goal but the picture in the papers of it showing the newish white Mitre ball. Had to get one...

I was there on the riverside terrace, quite near to the StJohn fisticuffs. I remember that Steve Earle's goal was hotly contested by Liverpool as having an element of handball in it.

Nevertheless, with Liverpool top and us bottom, it was a great time to start our renaissance that year which got us out of what looked to be certain relegation.

As a member of the Old Sods' Army I sometimes can't remember what happened a couple of days ago, but that game has survived 57 years in my fuddled old brain.

Do you remember picking up my half a crown ? It's got the Queens head on it.

Such a joy to see a game where there was no diving or theatrics. Players getting knocked over or tripping and getting back up and on with the game again. I almost forgot that was how games were played.

The bloke behind me beat me to it. I saw him after the game spending it in Taylor's Eel and Pie shop in Hammersmith.

I was in the Putney end, had a great afternoon, remember before the game being approached by a group of Liverpudlians in sing songs voices saying "where's the chippy la" I had no idea what they were saying.

My thoughts entirely, but in those days the players overall had good ethics and they let their football do the talking.
Not spending half the game on their backsides looking for free kicks, feigning injury and diving to seek to gain an advantage.
Only one sub and on a very muddy pitch.
Some of the players these days would not have survived 90 mins and some of them these days don't know what's it like to play 90 minutes week in and week out.

Many thanks for that, brings back memories of some very good Fulham players, how were we bottom of the table with that quality in our team.
I was at the match on the Hammy terracing and had a good view of the Pearson / St. John fisticuffs. It was clear at the end that even in those good old days the top teams hadn't learnt how to take a beating.

Unusual seeing Haynes in a number nine shirt and destroys the mythe that the number ten was tatooed to his back.

A lovely story at the time was about a formal poster outside a church in Liverpool that read "what will happen when the Lord comes" ,someone had written at the bottom in red crayon " St John will be moved to inside right"

How great to see this match again. I have little recollection of the game at all bar the score and the sending off. That happened in front of me and the memory of Pearson laid out like a corpse on a mortuary slab is one I've never erased!

I noticed that the dugouts were on the opposite side of the pitch, I can't remember when they were changed to the Riverside stand. Surprised that dressing rooms aren't in the new stand. I was at that game on the Riverside terrace, brings back good memories.

Woolly Mammoth

I am not sure if this was the genuine reason but i was told by some geezer who worked in the ticket office back in the day, that they moved the dugouts to the riverside because of the sun shining directly into the eyes of the management and coaches in the Dugouts.

I dunno. Pancho went down like a sack of spuds, and standing almost in line, I'm not sure St John connected

Two things that stuck out for me...
Kenneth taking about a 'Coupon Buster'.... which we still have today... which is why we love football...
But also, backpasses to the keeper... whenever he picks it up I keep expecting players to claim for the keeper picking it up... teams used to waste so much time doing that...
Quality match... thanks for posting...
